The only "Hardocore" game you listed is CS, and why would you create a new account for this?

Are you seriously suggesting halo 3, all the LoZ games and all the mario games are not hardcore?

Halo is the most casual shooter around. It has a hardcore fan base but the game is in no way hardcore.[QUOTE="proud722"][QUOTE="vash47"][QUOTE="fryerjackets"]as a hardcore gamer i play a lot of counterstrike, halo 3. legend of zelda. mario etc. but i can't word exactly why i play these hardcore games. would anyone care to make an attempt to sum up why hardcore games are appealing?

Halo is the most casual shooter around. It has a hardcore fan base but the game is in no way hardcore.Well I suppose it does have alot of casual players being very main stream and all but I donno I thought the campaign made it deserving of being callled hardcore and tbh I'm not even a fan of halo. In some instances quite the opposite.
"harcore" only exists in the minds of people not comfortable with playing any sort of game.Hewkii
Hardcore exists well in the minds of good businessman in the gaming industry, your comment seems quite foolish to me. Just because I refer to a game as hardcore and enjoy playing hardcore titles does that somehow mean or do you somehow think that means I wouldn't buy a casual game and openly praise and enjoy it?
From my experience only wii fanboys have attempted to brush of the existence of the "hardcore" market, like those of us that acknowledge it are some how lesser gamers. Though I'm not necessarily saying your one of them. I mean surely you can see the differences between the type of market a game like peggle has and the type of market a game like fallout 3 has.

define harcore.
Well imo: In business terms a market that expects certain aspects in a game to be strong in one of or more of some of these particular areas, the depth of the story of the game if it has one, the depth of the gameplay, possible graphical expectations and often getting a certain amount of time out of the game. Essentially casual gamers will have lower expectations in some if not all of these areas.
I suppose the core things here are depth and difficulty though. In gamer terms usually its just a reflection of much you play or just how interested you are.
Casual games don't engage me in the same way that a "hardcore" game does; you bearly have to pay attention as its game play is not reliant on using your mind or practicing a skill.
My most recent complaint regarding casual orientation was the upcoming Ghostbusters game; health regenerates GOW style, you cannot die only become temporarily incapacitated and you don't have to watch what you do because the financial damage monitor does jack all. A game with zero challenge or risk is boring; you are basically on an interactive conveyor belt until you inevitably complete the game, which would not be a triumph of personal ability but simply a time investment to work through it.
Casual games bore me.
Because 'hardcore' games can be about more than this simple idea of 'fun' that everyone seems to be so attatched to. These are the games that can take on real world issues, they can tell stories and leave you with emotions. They are not simple. They are not just about bashing buttons, in the same way that not all films are about just simply watching. z_gaming_master
*Starts slow clap*
That is an excellent reply.
mmm hmmm. depth. one of the words on my list of "words that i wish people would quit saying this gen". right on there with innovation, epic, and intuitive.
now, why do people like hardcore games? because theyre fun. just like non hardcore games.....whatever the hell that means.
now, answer me this. why do people like cinnamon toast crunch?

Warhawk most definitely requires skill.
Not many players can dodge one of those groud to air tracking missiles without flairs.

Who wants to play a game that isn't fun.
I don't see many non-fiction documentary games.
I agree games can have compelling, deep storylines, but that by it's self doesn't make a game hardcore.
Hardcore can be something like Pac-man which takes more skill then one would imagain.

Ah wait I see your point now. Ok so I should add these markets overlap. Now for example lets say I play games like PGR4 and GoW on my Xbox360. Now generally these games are considered hardcore so for any console gaming I do that's the market I stand in. But what if you take into account I own a DS. Now being a handheld your more likely to play casual games as they're more convenient to pick and play, now seeing as the £20 I spent on 42 all time classics I still feel was one of the best £20's I ever spent I'm now in both the casual and hardcore markets. The other way the markets may overlap is if a game reaches critical acclaim. So a casual gamer may end up getting a game like GoW and a hardcore gamer might end up getting a game like boomblox.
Ok maybe you have a point no real gamer can be exclusively casual or hardcore. That would cut them off from a whole pile of games and after all games are what being a gamer is all about. But the same consumer can have multiple needs, for the sake of this example both casual and hardcore needs to simplify it. So when a game developer decides to make a certain type of game they are also deciding which of these needs they are trying to satisfy. So in this way for a games developer to ignore which these of these casual or hardcore needs they are trying to satisfy with any particular game would be rather foolish and for this reason I feel my previous comment "Hardcore exists well in the minds of good businessman in the gaming industry" is still valid. Well that's why I feel that hardcore does exist outside of the minds of those that aren't comfortable with playing any sort of game as you put it.

Pac-Man is hardcore now because it's so old and the people that play it are mainly long time gamers with nostalgia. When it came out it wasn't hardcore.
