COD1 no question. A truly spectacular game for its day, way back in 2003. Had the best singleplayer of the bunch - well designed, and didn't try cheap tricks such as Modern Warfare's constantly re spawning choke points, and there was much more involving set pieces. The multiplayer was also superb. While it didn't rely on perks, unlocks and quite frankly stupid XP points to hold your attention, it was well balanced, and excellent fun as a team based multiplayer shooter. Personally I got into it and ended up playing a few clan matches. Can't say a COD has held my attention like that since.

Call of Duty 3: The first of the franchise to hit the next generation of consoles.

Lable1985

What happened to COD 2 !?!? It was on the 360 a year before COD 3 !!! If you ran out of slots you should have put COD 2 instead of COD 3 or atleast made a "COD 2 and/or COD 3" answer or "Other" or whatever

This thread = FAIL

Key word CONSOLES *plural* Not just the 360. And honestly I don't really give a toss about CoD 2 :P

I like COD2. You should have left COD3 out, no one is going to vote for that one.

With the extreme popularity of the call of duty franchise this question comes to mind. What is the overall best out of the franchise?

Call of Duty: The one the started it all.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare: The one that innovated the fps multiplayer genre.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2: The one the refined everything about its predecessor.

Call of Duty World at War: Zombie mode!!!!!!!!!

Call of Duty 3: The first of the franchise to hit the next generation of consoles.

MW2.. Its just good

United Offensive by a mile. Gray Matter was the best company to ever even sneeze in CoD's direction.

no cod 2? switch that with either world at war or call of duty 3 both are generally regarded as the weakest in the series.

No CoD2, TC? WTF? Anyway, I'll just rank them from best to worst, which exludes CoD1, as I haven't played it.

  1. Call of Duty 2: Huge setpiece battles, genuine intensity, massive scope, great multiplayer, and a better, longer single player than all the others. A masterpiece of a shooter.
  2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2: Keeps everything I loved about Call of Duty 2, but modernizes it. However, single player is criminally short and the story is one of the worst in modern gaming. Not a classic, but definately a veryentertaining shooter.
  3. Call of Duty: World at War: Some cool setpieces in single player, but once again too short, and multiplayer is broken, except co-op, which is pretty fun.
  4. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare: Totally lackluster. Great visuals for 2007, and Arcade mode was a nice touch, but that's it. Multiplayer is garbage, single player is lacking in the huge setpiece battles, and it's not even intense, a staple of the series.
  5. Call of Duty 3: I didn't even bother passing the second level on my rental, a total rehash of 3 but with smaller scope and a lack of polish.

The inclusion of Call of Duty 3, but not Call of Duty 2, screams "insta-fail".

I would like to remind everyone that I thought Cod 2 was rubbish so I didn't add it. Rubbish might be the wrong word to use, more like , wasn't as good as the rest. I didn't even think people cared about it till now when I added this topic. Just the very fact I never here anyone talk about how great it was is reason enough for it not being on the poll.

The first by miles. CoD 2 and CoD 4 MW were good however. CoD 4 MW was actually really good, buy the first was the best. It just found the perfect mix of acrady combat mixed with historical reality.

The campaign in CoD WaW was actually top notch. I really enjoyed it.

CoD 3 needs to be replaced by CoD2. W@W and CoD3 are abysmal... Anyways chose the original CoD.

Buy CoD Classic from the PSN Store/XBL Store. It's a great game.

Modern Warfare had the best setting for the campaign and addictive multiplayer.

All the COD games had pretty weak AI. They'd often stand in one place, waiting for you to shoot them. Awesome scripting of sequences in all of them though.

I'm planning on it, if it's anything like Medal of Honor or Call of Duty 2, which I hear it is. I also heard the single player is actually a big focus of the game, as opposed to all this multiplayer-only rubbish.

I beg to differ, back in the day, CoD1 online was the most memorable part of that game.

I picked CoD3. Next would be CoD4. I think CoD2 is far more popular than CoD3. :P
