I dont know about the absolute game of the past 12 yrs but i do believe that Gran Turismo can be described as one of the best.

Before it driving games were all arcade games with little to know reality to them, the only exceptions were a couple of niche F1 games on the PC from Geoff Crammond.

Ever since the first GT dropped; all racing games since have been inspired by it, whether its in the handling/physics model or the use of real environments to race in.

Thats my thoughts on the subject anyways.
