Top five favourites:
- Tetris (Game Boy)
- Super Mario World (SNES)
- Soul Calibur (Dreamcast)
- Super Monkey Ball (GameCube)
- Dead or Alive 3 (Xbox)
That's a tough call, but some have the console right but the wrong games.
The correct answer is Xbox with Project Gotham Racing & Rallisport Challenge.
Tie: Halo CE and Super Mario Bros.
I liked Mario 64, but I didn’t love it. Mainly due to that awful controller.
Agreed. SMB is one of the cornerstones of gaming. And Halo CE basically made Xbox.
The first game that came to mind was Soul Caliber ONE for the DC, that game alone sold me on a DC, also Super Mario World, which is still one of my top ten GOATs.
Mario 64 comes to mind but I never owned a N64.
Halo: CE was and is overrated, there, I said it.
In terms of quality, Breath of the Wild stands as my personal favorite. As for significance/importance, I'd go with the original Super Mario Bros. Without its success, gaming would not have succeeded as it has.
Ridge Racer on PS1. For the first time ever, we got super smooth, arcade perfect racer. SEGA had been trying to go arcade perfect for ages, but it was the superior SONY that finally nailed it with Ridge Racer. Man, it was awesome game.
Super Mario Bros. NES
It's main character literally became the FACE of gaming and started the transition from gaming being a niche hobby to appealing to a world wide mainstream market.
Every other answer is wrong.
It's ok to like Halo or whatever but those games aren't as well known or respected by gamers around the world. The only other game that can be considered outside of SMB would be Tetris.
@Sevenizz: Pong has actually been a launch game when you count all those consoles that could only play one game, which was Pong of course. Check out this one for example :

And the best launch title ever is Super Mario World.
Most of my favorite games came out post launch, but otherwise I'd probably have to go with Breath of the Wild. Really amazing game and the only console in the last 5 years to launch with an actual killer app.
Why do things gotta be things?
I think it's gotta be.. No wait I can't think of any memorable game launches.
Mario 64 was not impressive in it's day. The graphics like now, were old hat compared to pc. The game is average and had no effect on the industry as 3d platformers of equal merit were around before during and after Mario 64.
Sonic Adventure was an impressive launch title but I could see they f-ed the gameplay up from the beginning, unlike Mario 64 and it's serviceable and competent controls and camera. Visually though Mario 64 is a let down.
@jackamomo:
Mario 64 was very impressive in its day. I didn't even like Nintendo back then (I kind of saw them as "the enemy"), nor did I own any Nintendo console up until then (I only had Sega & Sony consoles and PCs), yet I remember still being blown away by Mario 64. The graphics looked more impressive than anything I had seen on consoles or PC up until then. The only PC game that came close was GL Quake, but that wasn't available until '97. Back in '96, there wasn't really any PC game that looked as good as Mario 64. However, it paled in comparison to the arcades, where Virtua Fighter 3 looked a generation ahead.
But what really made Mario 64 revolutionary was the way in which it implemented the analog controls, setting the template for how console games would be controlled for decades to come. Its smooth analog controls made the D-pad controls of 3D platformers on the PS1 (e.g. Jumping Flash, Tomb Raider, Crash Bandicoot, etc.) feel dated in comparison. But in hindsight, while it has aged better than other 3D platformers of its time, Mario 64 hasn't aged all that well compared to later 3D platformers. I prefer 3D platformers from gen 6 (particularly Sega's Super Monkey Ball and Sonic Adventure 2 as well as Ubisoft's Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time) over Mario 64.
