The Legend of Zelda

Zelda 2: Adventure of Link

Link to the Past

Ocarina of Time

Majora's Mask

Wind Waker

Twilight Princess

Skyward Sword

Since it's been a good while since the last mainline Legend of Zelda game released (meaning there has been enough time for all the immediate, knee-jerk, post release hype/hysteria/hate to have died down), and the next one isn't due for a while, I figured this is as good a time as any to ask you all this...

What is your favorite Legend of Zelda game?

Bonus question: where do you think the series needs to go next to be relevant, and to keep the Wii U a viable gaming alternative against the PS4 and X1?

Its easier to just mention my least favorite, Zelda II.  Big let down after the original and other games with similar formulas did it better.

I cant even come close to deciding between LttP, OoT, MM and WW.  I even think TP is great.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 5. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess 6. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword 7. The Legend of Zelda: The Adventure of Link 8. The Legend of Zelda

Ocarina of Time. One of my favorite games of all time.

Also, where's the poll?

I find the exclusion of the Gameboy titles insulting, Chaz  Nobody cares about the DS ones, but Link's Awakening DX was legit. Open question: I've been asking which if the oracle games I should start with once they're released tomorrow. The general consensus is Seasons. Anyone have thoughts?

Ages>>>>>>>>>>>Seasons by so much, it's not even funny. Ages has some of the best puzzles in the series. It figures that people on System Wars would choose the easier, more casual game of the two, though...

Oh hell yes. They're among the best Zelda games, and some of the best realization of the 2D Zelda formula.

I prefer the 3D games, of which the series felt most alive and full of potential with Ocarina of Time and Windwaker. I loved Twilight Princess, but it was a bit of an ocarina throback and didn't have the same "spark" of imagination seen in the aforementioned two titles. Skyward Sword was a really great game but not the stuff of legends, for me.

You can get them both for $10, so I may just go for it, I've been also been meaning to get either Pushmo or Crashmo, OT should you play them in a specific order?

I'd say it's a tie between ALttP and Majora's Mask.

MM for its surprising amount of content and interesting things to do and see, and ALttP for actually respecting the intelligence of a normal human being when it comes to its level design.  (ex.  No LISTEN OR HEY GO HERE AND DO THIS THING AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS)

That being said Zelda is never that impressive, fun to be had for a short while sure, but nothing really spectacular.

Also, Starfox Adventures is my favorite Zelda like game.  Luv me some Star Fox.

Over the years my opinion has changed quite a bit. For the longest time I thought the original was by far the best. Then I shifted to A Link to the Past. Then to Twilight Princess. I never considered Ocarina of Time the greatest entry in the franchise despite it being a superb game in all aspects. Now, I would be inclined to divide the franchise into two categories: 2D and 3D because of their huge differences. I would have to say that A Link to the Past is the pinnacle of the 2D Zelda games, and few have come close to topping it. It took everything that the original did, and made it better and added more. As for 3D I would overwhelmingly pick Twilight Princess. It is the ALttP of the 3D Zelda games. I realize this might be a bit more controversial since many consider it a rehash of OoT in many respects. But honestly, TP has the most expansive and filled world yet. No other Zelda game comes close. And that's what led me to be so severely disappointed with Skyward Sword because it really shrunk the world drastically. TP also had a very dark story, just as OoT did. I would actually say that OoT has a much better story, and better boss fights than TP. But the vast open world, and numerous dungeons are what put TP over the top for me.

I agree with you for the most part, but what made me dislike TP to an extent, was that though the over world was massive, it sort of felt empty, it was very large, but with little to do. it is a great game, but I'd rather have a smaller world with lots to do than a expansive world that feels empty.

Was there very little to do though in TP? I've never been a big sidequest kind of guy, but I felt that there were plenty. I felt the broad open landscapes were pretty cool to take in as well. I guess it depends on how much people like to sidequest?

So hard to decide really. They're all pretty much even number 1, but if I had to split hairs:

1. Majora's mask
2. Wind Waker
3. Minish Cap
4. Well it's getting really hard to choose now. Everything!

THis list is probably the most likely way I feel, but again, hard to say.

Fun factoid: MM was my least favorite Zelda. I first rented it as a kid and hated the time thing. Later on during the N64 generation, I owned a copy and played it properly. It was amazing.

The games I've missed out on were Majora's Mask, Wind Waker, and Skyward Sword, I never got Majora's Mask on the N64, only played GC games on a BC Wii and by then Wind Waker was hard to acquire, and I was about to get Skyward Sword until I played the in store demo and was so demo-ralized by it I changed my mind about getting it. I have played a lot of Ocarina of Time on the N64, and again on the 3DS and it's still a blast to play, and while back I borrowed my friends GBA cartridge for Link To The Past and it was just as fun as it was on the SNES, also have it on Wii VC. I wasn't all too impressed with Twilight Princess overall but I only played it the one time, didn't devote too much to exploration and collecting things like the bugs and whatnot. But I still have it, maybe I can give it a shot again and see if it's still a great game. I for the life of me still can't get back into the original NES Zelda, though I played it a ton when I was younger I don't remember much of it, and can't find myself enjoying it like I used to. Strangely I remember almost everything from a game like Metroid, like where all the hidden areas and passages and power ups were, and I played that probably just as much as I did Zelda, but still can't remember all the tricks to Zelda like I used to. I've also played Phantom Hourglass, that was a good bit of fun. Still haven't finished Spirit Tracks, but I doubt that would have made it as my favorite pick anyways. I'd have to say Ocarina of Time is my favorite, having just played it again recently on the 3DS has convinced me this game has timeless charm. Link To The Past would be my second favorite, so I'm pretty stoked they're making another game like it. Despite all my Wii U bashing, I'd still like to get one when they get cheaper and have a larger library, I'm definitely going to want to try Wind Waker HD, but hopefully when the Wii U has a respectable library of other games to pick up. And I know people have been hounding Nintendo for a Majora's Mask remake ever since Ocarina of Time on the 3DS, so hopefully we can see a nice remake on that as I've yet to play it, but I thought the 3DS gave the N64 game quite a facelift.

5) Link's Awakening (tied with Twilight Princess) 4) Link to the Past 3) Windwaker 2) Skyward Sword 1) Ocarina of Time Those are my top five. Still have not played Majora's Mask, the Oracle games, Spirit Tracks, and have not finished Minish Cap yet.

TP barely had any sidequests when compared to other Zelda games. The plot was also a rehash of ALTTP

Yeah, the enemies in Twilight Princess just kinda stare at you until you hack them to the ground. Skyward Sword, however, takes a little more skill due to the controls alone. And enemy designs in the latter were much more creative.
