What is the greatest Legend of Zelda game?

my top 3 would be

1) a link to the past. still plays very well today.

2) wind waker: wonderful game. fantastic art direction. a bit easy but a pleasure to play

3) a link between worlds: very well designed for a portable game. dungeons dont go on too long and are fun. same great gameplay from a link to the past but with some improvements. art style is not the best but not a major blemish.

Honestly, the first one. It's really pick up and play. It's almost an arcade game. The combat is tight, and it's mostly a combat game. It doesn't contain that many oppressive puzzles, although there are some secrets necessary to progress, and they could use some better clues.

Probably the best total experience I've had in terms of narrative and atmosphere is Majora's Mask. Some aspects of that game are obtuse however. I was a seasoned gamer when I first played it (which was after the n64 gen), so I could power through the bad design it had in some parts.

I like them for entirely different reasons.

I've only played 2 Zelda games, so i'd say it was a tie.

I have not played a Zelda game since Majora's Mask in like 7th grade. I have Wind Waker and Twilight Princess GC discs, and I'm thinking of going through both on dolphin on my pc. I've gotten like an hour into Twilight Princess. How is it?

I'm by no means a Zelda expert... but from the ones I've played, I really liked Wind Waker. Also Twilight Princess.

I'm generally more a fan of 3d zelda. 2d was alright but the level of immersion is somewhat diminished. The individuality of each zone and level aren't always there. And while Zelda 1 and LttP were big steps up, OoT was as well and more so in directions that I enjoyed. It's still probably my favorite game of all time, I regularly return to it almost 20 years later. Atmosphere, pacing, level design, all feel so great, even the stuff that makes people butthurt like water temple, I love.

The order of favorites from that list is like:

1. OoT

2. TP

3. MM

4. WW

5. LttP

6. Zelda 1

7. Zelda 2

You do fight Ganon in the oracle games, have you never linked saves?

You fight him in the Oracle games. You need to beat both and use either Gamelink save or password save. It'll unlock tons of awesome secrets including the true ending and a boss fight against Twinrova.

Twilight Princess is hands down the definitive title for me.

The fact that you didn't write the "the" of The Legend of Zelda grinds my gears.

I agree with Wind Waker but Majora's Mask? Thing is brilliant. Great departure from traditional Zelda games. Discovery and adventuring are the main draws. Not endless dungeon crawling.

@Juub1990: MM was at least super unique but I found it kind of tedious. My save also got erased when I was on the last dungeon so **** that game forever

Wind Waker followed closely by Ocarina of Time. I feel in love with Wind Wakers visuals from day 1. It helped that the game world was a beauty to behold as well. I loved the way the cell shading made the world more vibrant, and in a strange way more alive. The story was the usual but the characters were interesting and Ganon look cool asf. Still have my original Gamecube game in my closet. Never selling it.

A Link Between Worlds and then Majora's Mask

People hating on Wind Waker are plain stupid. That game is the definition of masterpiece.

I split my comparisons in two. Because it's already hard enough comparing all the Zelda's, I find it easier comparing the 2D's and 3D's separately, as well as the multiplayer focused games.

3D:
MM > WW > OoT > WW > TP

2D:
ALttP > ALBW > Z1 > LA > MC > OoA > OoS > Z2 > ST > PH

Multiplayer focused:
TFH > FSA > FS

Then there's the CDi games.

Note: subject to change on a daily basis.

I have a feeling that BotW may become number 1, but we'll see.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (Your vote)

I used to be all over the place about this and it would just depend on the day. But I finally settled on LttP being my fav a couple of years back. No hand holding, no padding, no bullshit. It's just pure Zelda. You could say the same of the original, but LttP was just much better.

I still need to really play LBW. I've started it a few different times, but I always get side tracked with something else.

Link to the Past AND Ocarina of Time for different reasons.

Link's Awakening is quite close tho

@ConanTheStoner: ALBW is basically a modern remake of LttP, slightly easier, but also incredibly more inventive. Definitely give it a go. It's also super short, you can probably finish it in like 2-3 sittings lol.
