Simple question, with lots of possible answers. I wanted to get a feel for what system wars thinks of the matter as I am researching the subject. I'll break down the reasons for the poll options.

Pac Man = The first truely blockbuster video game. The first gaming mascot to gain huge fame and appear outside of just the video game world. Marketable to everyone, Pac Man brought challenging, yet easy to learn casual gaming to the arcade and beyond.

Super Mario Brothers = Huge leap in home console technology. A mascot for the ages. Spurred the sale of home consoles and saved the industry for the crash of 1984.

Doom = The first person shooter is born in a serious way. Put PC gaming firmly in the forefront of gaming technology. Shareware explodes. Controversy over game content explodes. The ESRB becomes standard.

Quake = Online competitive multiplayer over the internet. Online clans. Online tournaments. Graphics accelerators required, Pushed the GPU's onto PC's, killed hardware acceleration. The idtech engine is licenced for use by all kinds of developers. Half-Life is made. Valve thrives, steam eventually comes into being.

Other = Name your pick, and give a reason why.

Lets see how this goes :)

Either Pac-Man, but would have said "Space Invaders" if it was on the list. Dragon's Lair is up there also.

...joking? How does a game getting a 10 from some sites make it important in any way. It's not like it helped re launch gaming like Mario Bros did, or get people interested in gaming like Pac Man, or help the PC gaming market explode like Doom. It's not like it's even been super influential on other developers, how many MGS clones are there? None.

Quake is directly responsible for Half-Life. Valve used the quake engine (idtech), and was in contact with id during development for support. Added that to the facts list to reflect Quake and Half-Lifes importance.

He's trolling. Nobody cares about the MGS franchise or any of its aspects and features. Therefore, it's less influential than Wii Sports.

For instance, while CoD4 didn't score a 10, to not call it one of the most influential (being an inspiration to pretty much EVERY other developer in the FPS genre) games of this generation, all categories, would be as stupid as to claim that Obama isn't the U.S. president.

How the heck is quake is responsible for half life when all valve used was the ENGINE and asked for help from ID SOFTWARE?:P

The Legend of Zelda.

SMB may have been the pack in game that drove people to buy an NES, but TLoZ was the game that cemented the console's place in history.

Later on, OoT would drive the very concept of action games forward, as its predecessor once did.

Probably wolfenstein 3d, they basically made a genre. Doom greatly improved on it a lot, so either works for me.

Pong - Duh

Super Mario Bros - Saved console gaming, shaped platformers forever, it was friggen SMB man.

Halo C.E. - Proved FPS could be done well on consoles and started the whole FPS on console trend

Everquest - First MMORPG that really took off and is still being copied by games today (Wow copied a crazy amount from EQ)

Pong..it single handedly started the market we know today, it spawned a load of clones and generally seen as the game that started it all including the arcade ideology and later down the line the home console one aswell.

No other game really comes close to being as influential in many senses.

I didn't say they were. I don't think any FPS can hold the title of "most important game" given the history of the industry. I was merely pointing out that Half Life did not shape the FPS genre.

SMB for reviving the video game industry. No other game has done it to the extent Mario has. :D
