Simple question, with lots of possible answers. I wanted to get a feel for what system wars thinks of the matter as I am researching the subject. I'll break down the reasons for the poll options.
Pac Man = The first truely blockbuster video game. The first gaming mascot to gain huge fame and appear outside of just the video game world. Marketable to everyone, Pac Man brought challenging, yet easy to learn casual gaming to the arcade and beyond.
Super Mario Brothers = Huge leap in home console technology. A mascot for the ages. Spurred the sale of home consoles and saved the industry for the crash of 1984.
Doom = The first person shooter is born in a serious way. Put PC gaming firmly in the forefront of gaming technology. Shareware explodes. Controversy over game content explodes. The ESRB becomes standard.
Quake = Online competitive multiplayer over the internet. Online clans. Online tournaments. Graphics accelerators required, Pushed the GPU's onto PC's, killed hardware acceleration. The idtech engine is licenced for use by all kinds of developers. Half-Life is made. Valve thrives, steam eventually comes into being.
