Believe it or not, this is the first generation of games I have actually played WRPG (besides Diablo heh)
I am really enjoying the stories, customization and most of all.. CHOICE! Never in a JRPG have I seen choice like in a game like Dragon Age: Origins which makes things so much more interesting or being open ended like Oblivion. Can't say I am not craving a good JRPG but they are few and far between since the PlayStation 1 =/
Character developement. While in my opinion almost no game ever managed to do it right, it's the most important part of an RPG. Kinda offtopic, but
Epic cow ownage, PC can't do HD, PS3 on a treadmillNerkcon sigI should be sleeping, but reading these threads managed to keep me roll on the floor laughing long enough to wake up some of my neighbours, especially the "what is a zerg" thread linked by foxhound. OH MY GOD. LOL.
[QUOTE="Zero5000X"][QUOTE="Yandere"]not much of an RPG gamer, eh? More then you are. Obviously not western RPGs cause choice is near the top if not the top of the list for a good WRPGIn order:

Good story, interesting characters, good dialogue, good voice acting.
Unless its ahack'n'slash RPG like Diablo, then its all about THE LOOT!!!
When it comes to choices they should not be be all plain good and evil, moral grey ground is interesting, either choice having its pros and cons.

Only newer WRPGs have choices, I dislike newer WRPGs.
Guess someones never played Baldurs Gate.

You act as if that's a problem. So he doesn't like modern WRPGS? Wooptie doo.
Story choices (story in general), characters, gameplay (that's including the game's interface and controls of course)
The combat and the progression systems are the most important, because they're the main gameplay mechanics and a RPG is a game after all. Dialog choices aren't the most important thing ever, since a lot of RPGs doesn't even have them yet, and the ones that do...imo they're still not perfect.
Importantance listed in order even though I feel RPGs need all 5.
1. Story
2. Characters
3. Game Play
4. Graphics
5. Loot
Domination of stats over player's own skills is what makes a game RPG in the first place.
But freedom of choices is (whether it's in plot or in mechanical side) is what to me determines the quality of RPG the most
Pretty much this. I dont get this facination with story everyone is mentioning in this thread. Most videogame storys especially RPGs are lol worthy, even industry giants. and the ones that end up doing it right are rarely something that don't rip something off wholesale or come off as cliche.Domination of stats over player's own skills is what makes a game RPG in the first place.

That's the reason I love jRPGs at all. Turn based combat is annoying, but playable. Random Battles are infuriating, but I can endure it. If the story is bad, & characters bland, I lose interest quickly pretty quickly unless the gameplay, mainly combat mechanics, are fun. I lose interest in a lot of wRPG's because the the story & characters are dull, but many have great gameplay which can save the game.
I really didn't like Oblivion. Dull story, dull characters. Massive, detailed world but - Quality > Quantity. I think I will like FF XIII because the story seems interesting, as do the characters & battle system actually looks really good for a turn based game & I heard the battles aren't random, but I'm not certain. I've heard it's very linear, & while I do like exploration, watching a good story fold out is so much better.
Story comes first, then it has to be the Characters. If the story and characters suck, count me out. The battle system is not all that important, just as long as it works well with what type of RPG it is. Finally exploration is a big must for me. That's one of the reasons I hated FFX. The story was ok, but the characters were awful and cutting out exploration really killed it for me. People are saying that FFXIII is like FFX. I won't enjoy it if that's the case. I'll stick to RPGs made by GUST. I love those.

What kind of RPGs do you play? I agree with depth, but combat?
[QUOTE="tubbyc"]Wouldn't you feel more satisfied figuring out the proper strategy to a fight rather than just grinding to the point where you can win? Becoming more powerful does not necessary mean grinding. This for me too. I like the feeling of becoming more and more powerful.

Interaction with the world and npcs around you.
For me RPGs are always about the world around you, and your impact on it. Stats and character development is fine and all, but without the world you can alter/help/destroy it is often rather pointless.
The best RPGs for me is those where the Player Character does not feel out of place, and it feels as if the world would go on without him/her, just a little fish in a big pond.
Surprised at sotry choices. Most people like their RPGs for character development.
Also isn't choice C similar to B except for dice rolls aspects.
I cant pick from the poll, i enjoy exceptions to them all equally
Planescape: torment had great characters / setting but i realy disliked the diceroll combat
Disgaea is a addicting number cruncher with barely any story to speak of
Mass effect offered alot of choise but the combat was wattered down.
All 3 are great games and i much prever it when a game picks one thing and really makes that element amazing than trying to be a jacl of all trades and and up average in all respects

I want a deep combat system for Tactical RPGs, it's nice for Dungeon Crawlers and Roguelikes but not needed.

Yes that's a part of it, there's strategy for individual fights and also deciding what to equip yourself with, which weapons to buy/upgrade, or which attributes to improve as you gain new powers and strength. Also, your power builds up just as a result of doing the mandatory tasks in the game, not just grinding.
The most important part? Being able to weave it all together seamlessly.siLVURcross
THIS is the correct the answer!! In fact you can't seperate Story and Character development, since the story relies on the main character to drive events, and the character is defined by the outcome of the story. Really, it's an inseperable thing, like Time and Space.
