In order:

Combat System > Depth > Difficulty > Interface > Locations > Controls > NPCs > Story > Choices

Yandere

Couldn't disagree more, but since i know you like to kick it old school, i'll leave it at that.

I'd say Story, Combat System, Choices, Differculty, NPC's,Depth,Interface/controls, Locations.

Pokémon shows people prefer combat over story.

BattleTurtles

The combat is as lackluster as the story. People enjoy the world and game mechanics.

You Gotta catch 'em all you know.

The thing I like most on a RPG is the NPC interaction and the freedom of choices regarding dialogs, quests and story. The feeling of being in a different and convincing world is what makes RPGs so special to me. Combat and character development has their degree of importance, but it doesn't mean anything if the NPCs are generic, dumb and unninsteresting.

That's why I love the Ultima, Baldur's Gate, Fallout, Gothic and some other old RPG series. Every NPC has a story to tell you, they live their lives, react naturally to the player's actions, making perfectly clear that the world doesn't turn around yourself.

Story.. fun is obvious for all games.. but specifically for RPGs, I can excuse a poor battle system if the story and characters are good, not particularly story choices though.. story choices often take away from the story quality as they have to write so many sub-scenerios, better to focus on one great story then a dozen mediocre ones. 110million

This sums up my opinion pretty much. Dialog choices are cool and lead to different paths.. But they often make the story a snooze fest.

Why is Oblivion on your gamercard and not in the "trashcan" ? It has a piss poor story.

Wow, most people just want a game. Any game, not really an RPG.

I picked 3, not because i like math, but it's the only one that really defines the RPG genre: indirect control of the PC's actions.

That was the basis of it's birth. And that's the way it should remain.

Other than DA:O, Torchlight or that game based on a German system, there are very few real RPG this gen. Most of them are action games with stats (that don't really count very much, the stats that is).

The game based on a German pen&paper system is Drakensang: The Dark Eye. It was an amazing (but flawed) old-school RPG.

Hard for me to say. Some games have incredible stories that you tend to overlook other elements of the game - i.e. Mass Effect. Other games have fun action/gameplay that you ignore the fact that the stories are somewhat weak - i.e. Diablo, Demon's Souls. I've thoroughly enjoyed both of those types - as long as they do something well, it keeps me coming back. My favorite rpgs are Planescape Torment and Baldur's Gate 2 - probably because they do the story well, but also had good gameplay and stat building for the time.

Character development and choices & consequences. Along with these, I feel the depth of interaction with the world around you, including the NPCs within are important as well.

The most important aspect of a role playing game for me is the story, if it manages to keep me guessing throughout the game then it did it jobs. After this then I guess the soundtrack is the next important aspect that I would like to have, since if we are having battles after battles then it would be nice to have something good to listen to. This is then follow up by gameplay and characters development.

FF7 was allround fun, good characters, plot twists, minigames, fun combat with customisation through its materia system and afcourse:

The honey bee inn and golden saucer were some memorable moments in gaming.
