What is the game that you played and honestly thought....WHAT THE **** WERE THEY THINKING?
Superman 64 might be at the top of my list.

Generic answer here, but probably E.T. on the 2600. It really is that bad.
Though usually games like Bubsy 3D come to mind. Plenty of damn near broken, or absolutely piss poor designed games on the NES as well.
There are many, I have played my share of bad games but Watchdogs is right up there for me. I mean it wasn't that BAD not really awful terrible bad in terms of gameplay it was just so boring I couldn't bring myself to even look at it after a while let alone actually do anything in it lest I lose the will to live.
Aside from the usual answers, recent Madden games are by far really...really bad.
Never played one but Rugby games are impressively bad. It's not like playing Rugby it's like, well, I don't know what it's like exactly. I know it is not good.
The easy answer here is Dragon's Lair on the NES. The worst game I've ever bought at launch fully expecting it to be something great was Spore.
@blueinheaven: There are basic fundamentals that are missing in Madden games.
It seriously is unbelievable.
I remember this old gem as being one of the worst NES games I owned. Even worse, I tried playing it with the Power Glove.
Man, some of you dudes have had some great luck with games. This medium has been in some dark places lol.
L.A. Rush was an asshole. Traffic would focus on you and only you.
Also there was a sword fighting game back in the day with samurais and it had the worst hit detections ever.
Every COD

I don't know much about Madden I gather it's American football or baseball or some other shit but rugby (which I don't even like, I like 'proper' football) just looks really awful in games. They can't get the passing right or set pieces or anything. I'll take your word for it that they have fucked it up just as badly with Madden.
Actually I love football but hate football games lol. So I'm an all round waste of time on this subject probably but I'll stand by my right to talk nonsense about this or that on the internet, everyone else does...
@ConanTheStoner: LOL i remember this game. I liked it as a kid, went back and played it and it's pure shit.
I was 9 when I first played it, old enough to recognize the shit factor. It stuck out like a sore thumb among all the awesome NES games I had been playing.
There was one NES game I played that was much worse than that though. Equally poor gameplay, but you actually had to glitch the game to progress in some areas and the glitches weren't consistent. I wish I could remember the name, it still haunts me to this day. Unfortunately the only description I can come up with is "generic sidescroller" lol. Can't remember much about the game beyond that. I think it had guns? Yeah, I'll never figure it out.

There was a lot of shit games on NES. There's a reason that SNES games held their value so well and NES, not so much.

Yeah, the NES was the wild west. Not as bad as the 2600, but a lot of straight bullshit was released on that platform. They definitely cleaned up a lot of the trash with the SNES.
Also the first TMNT game was brutal for me... while I thought I enjoyed it at the time, I could not get passed the underwater bomb diffuse stage
Original TMNT wasn't a terrible game, but holy fvck yes it was brutal. Don't feel bad about the swimming stage(s), most people called it quits there lol.

I have to say either Superman or ET for Atari 2600. I didn't have a god damn clue what I was playing with those 2 trashes!
Original TMNT was brutal and terrible.
Yeah, as much as I dislike the "for its time" arguments, I'll admit, I was going with that frame of mind. Compared to its contemporaries, it was a middle of the road game. It could have been much much worse. Compared to something like Bad Street Brawlers it's a masterpiece lol.
But yeah, if we're looking at the game on its own merits, it's pretty fucking bad.
Wow so many...so, so many horrible games but a quick off the top of my head list. Most modern bad games aren't nothing compared to old bad games.

Back in the day, I actually didn't mind E.T. I had fun with it, for Atari 2600, it had decent graphics. I never saw what was so bad about it per say so long as you knew what you were doing and were supposed to do. Now Bubsy 3D was definitely pretty bad however there were actually quite a few early PS1 titles that never had any recognition but were pretty horrible.
@n64dd: That is the reason for AVGN's existence. To play and review those horrible NES games and other bad games on retro consoles

Man, I guess I fall into that category then. Was there actually a point to the game? I remember playing a lot of shitty games on the 2600, but none seemed as pointless to me as E.T. I don't remember there being any goal whatsoever, just roaming from one screen to the next and falling into holes.
Wait, missed this at first lol. Do you mean Dragons Layer NES? Because Dragon Slayer (aka Legacy of the Wizard) is actually a really good game. Incredibly challenging for sure, torturous for a kid to figure out on his own, but it's a legit game.
Thief (this gen) is probably the worst game this generation.
It was so boring.
I don't need action to be captivated and I like stealth games, but I kept waiting for it to get out of the tutorial model feel.
I thought ET on 2600 was quite fun, granted I was 5 or so when I played it but I had a blast with it, and it is easily in my top 10 fav 2600 games.
Worst game I have ever played is probably largo winch on ps1, it is a poor mans metal gear with 0 redeeming qualities, if you want a good laugh you should check it out.
Lol @ people picking games like Half-Life 2 & Witcher 3... these are the worst games you've ever played? I'd like to see what your fav games are then...
