Poll What is the worst PlayStation system? (165 votes)

PlayStation 4%
PlayStation 2 4%
PlayStation 3 12%
PlayStation 4 16%
PlayStation Portable 16%
PlayStation Vita 49%

Same rules as the Nintendo systems thread- every single system to have ever borne PlayStation branding qualifies (except for Xperia Play, once again for obvious reasons).

My question to you is, with all of the handhelds and consoles in the mix, which PlayStation system would you say was the worst of them all?

@Heirren: Eh, the buttons royally suck (playing Peace Walker's button mashing sequence was cancer) and I wish the stick was on the very left, but the system otherwise is awesome.

I'm tempted to say Vita as it's the least commercially successful, but I've a feeling if I splurged for a Vita that I'd really like it (but it still takes a backseat to having a WIi U, Xbox One, PS4, but I digress...). I'd say personally I found the PS3 to be the most disappointing of Sony's consoles, from it's horrible priced launch of $600 (HDMI/component cables sold separately), weak sauce launch line-up, releasing with a rumble free SIXAXIS, horribly designed controller with long convex tips and stupid dainty triggers, I hate the bluetooth headsets, lack of party chat in an era of strong online integration, long game installs and updates, Sony pulling out of offering full BC, Sony creating an emulator for the digital PS2 classics and not sharing it for full software emulation, and some of the most over-hyped exclusives ever - for these reasons I found the PS3 to be my least favorite Sony system.

I love them all but I have to say the Vita is the worst of them not because of the system but because the library is weaker.

on your whole list, its the vita, sony doesn't support it at all, they abandoned it. If you remove portables, its the PS3 by a landslide.

PSP Go without a doubt. One of the stupidest ideas from a company with a long legacy of stupid ideas.

Of the ones listed though I guess the Vita. It's a good system, but it could have been so much better had Sony actually supported it. Well that and not tried to gouge for over priced custom micro SD cards,

Despite the ps4 shaping up to be a boring indie-fest excuse of a console, I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and not vote for it since its still early in the gen.

PS3 is the worst for me as it was steamrolled by the 360 in pretty much every area. Even the coveted PS3 exclusives were very hit and miss - most being mediocre and not worth anyones time. It was a huge drop from the PS2.

I think it's between the PSP and the PS3. The PSP had little impact on the market (but had a few good games), while the PS3 had huge dry spells.

The Vita is also up there, but at least it has a better catalogue once you include the PSP library as well?

If you do that for the vita, why wouldn't you do that for the PS3? It played PS2 games, and had PS1 games on a digital store.

PS3 could play PS1 games from disc (and from PSN); PS2 compatibility was limited to the few games they put on PSN Store, unless you had one of the 80GB or earlier models.

Actually PS3 couldn't play PS1 games from disc, it Emulated PS1 games from disc iirc.

Based purely on the amount of games, has to be the vita. It's a nice piece of kit but I've mostly used mine to play old ps one games and ports and that's about it. I don't feel like there are nearly enough reasons to own one unless you really want to play these games on the go.

Out of the main 4, they have all been consistently good. I didn't have to think this gen about which to buy. Didn't have a ps one but it speaks for itself. Revolutionised the industry, put Sony on the map, won the gen. PS2 was power wise the weakest of the gen but with the best library overall. PS3 started off really slowly but more than made up for it by the end with a huge library of great games. PS4 feels about the same. Slowish start, but it's sony and has the 3rd party so it's a work in progress that's hard to quantify.

Outside the Vita, i gotta go with the PS3. The 360 took a big chunk out of its marketshare and provided superior performance with some multiplats, they blundered the price because of its bluray player and the lack of games paved the way to a rocky road early on. It got right by the end, but it is nowhere near the PS2 and PS1.

With the PS4, it's kinda early. We'll see by the end.

Honestly, the Vita wouldn't be so bad if Sony just dropped the pretense of it having a dedicated line up and drop the price. It's a glorified PS4 Accessory at this point.

No, it is pretty dumb. :) Don't mean to sound harsh, either. PS3 plays all psx games and even all ps2 games on some models. It has access to countless arcade collections and smaller budget titles. PS2 has an enormous library and also plays all psx games. How in the world the ps4, a console that strives to rape consumer of all digital rights and institute backwards compatibility by means of laggy as fck streaming gameplay.....? Ya I don't think so.

...oh and ps4 has a laptop trackpad and a flashlight on the controller giving it 90 minutes battery life. lol

Don't know if it's fair to compare the handhelds against consoles, but I guess the Vita would be my pick.

Out the consoles, I'd probably go for PS2 if I'm honest. Thought it was overrated as a console.

I'd maybe say PS4 since the library isn't far along yet and it has the least games accessible on it out of all the PS systems.

That was the best one. It may not have played all the PSP games but the ones it did play it handled orders of magnitude better than any other model.

Hardware-wise, the PSP without question.

But assuming we're talking library (and ignoring the Vita plays the PSP library, better than the PSP) then the Vita trails, though I don't think the difference is insurmountable within the Vita's shelf life. It already has 100 more games than the PSP received over its run, including some excellent exclusives and the best playing version (IMVHO) of a wide array of multiplats, especially indies. And it's going to keep adding for awhile.

@Heirren:

You can't compare a console that just came out to 10 years old ones, library wise. Sure i'm comparing hardware and library, but since PS4 is just starting, we can only look at it's potential, again, based on the dev support its currently getting.

Anyway, here is my opinion on each Playstation based on my PERSONAL experience:

PS1 - Great hardware and a massive library of both, western and japanese games. Lots of ports from PC classics (Warcraft 2, C&C, Doom, Hexen, etc)

PS2 - Huge library, but lacked many important games you could only find on PC and Xbox (KOTOR, Morrowind, Half Life 2, Doom 3, etc). Unlike many die hard PS fans believe, PS2 was not factually the best system of all time. Fans of FPS, WRPG, RTS, and even racer games would find it....well...not so amazing.

PS3 - Despite it's terrible start, a decade old controller design and lots of hardware limitations, it ended up with a very good library. That said, you could find alot more games on Xbox 360 and PC.

PS4 - Great hardware design, controller redesign and full dev support. There are obviously less games compared to previous Playstation consoles, so far, but the potential is there.

Like i said: PS1 > PS4 > PS2 > PS3 :)

While I can't speak from experience(and clearly not many can because almost no wants to buy it) the vita has got to be it. It practically dead on arrival. At no point did its situation ever look good. There really aren't many games of its own that look worth owning either.

The psp ay least had a decent couple years and was outpacing the Ds for a brief time. It still sold a pretty impressive amount and once every country except Japan started hating it Square, Konami and Capcom still supported it

I simply exercised my prerogative to do so. The PS2 is widely regarding to be the greatest console ever. To have the PS4, which has not realized much, if any, of its potential, rated more highly is asinine.

And you keep mixing facts with your opinion lol

For you PS2 is probably the best system of all time, for me it's not even in the top 10. The fact it didn't get most of my favourite games of 6th generation is the main reason.

PS4, on the other hand, while having alot to prove, is in the right direction. The hardware is good and familiar (no emotion engine, cell and other overhyped lies), gets support from the devs i like and the dualshock was redesigned.

PS4 - Great hardware design, controller redesign and full dev support. There are obviously less games compared to previous Playstation consoles, so far, but the potential is there.

I've heard the PSOne port of Hexen was REALLY bad. Worse than the N64 version if I recall.

You left out PSPGo!

Which is a regular PSP stripped out of it's UMD drive and focused on DD?

Well it was also marketed as a new system. Of course yeah it was BS but hmm.

ps3. it was a monumental **** up after the great ps2.

And at the end of the gen Sony's "worst" console was still better than the competition.

In your opinion.

What other console then? PS3 beats 360 and wii easily in the exclusive dep.

Playstation vita by far no driver game no gta game no open world game like gta

No first party support after 2 yrs the last aaa title was a port of Borderlands 2

The over priced memory cards plus the fact you actually need one inserted just to start a game.

Plus no BC with psp retail games

The faulty touch pads ya I've had two burn out on me and Sony support did not help

I would even say it is right behind virtual boy as the worst platform ever

Library comparison? This is true. What I can bring up is what the facts are. PS2 plays all psx and ps2 games. PS3 plays all psx games, some or all ps2 games, and has tons of arcade/indie games. These two consoles plays these games native to the machine. The PS4 on the other hand is striving for streaming play. It is not a consumer friendly device in this respect and will likely never do native play as sales are high enough. The ps4 is likely never going to get most of the games available on psn, that are on ps3, either. Why? Because the way the psn account system is setup in tandem with digital purchases. You cannot sell the customer the same product twice. Big alterations would have to be made to the games in order for sony to legally do so (I question Nintendos ethics here all the time).

The design of the hardware is also questionable in this day and age. It uses the same controller layout as previous generations yet can only use a ps4 controller. I'm convinced the touch pad and light were only really added to push accessory sales. Outside of that youd think sony would support expensive peripherals like steering wheels and fightsticks from last gen. PS4 is a console designed to push a different way to sell the videogame medium and is the most sly drm machine on the market.
