What is up with gamespot recently in terms of their extreme review scores?

Since the past year gamespot has been giving some pretty harsh scores to games that seemingly don't deserve the hate?

Examples?

ZombiU- The metacritc score is a respectable 77 but gamespot gave it a 4.5 (the worst score of 70 professional reviews).

Resident evil 6-The metacritc score is 74 but gamespot again gave it a 4.5 (Which is again the worst of all professional reviews).

lugi's mansion- the metacritc is an 85 and gamespot gives it a 65 (the worst of all professional reviews, hopefully you start to see a trend).

legend of zelda skyward sword- an aggregate of 93 by over 80 reviews and gamespot gives it a 7.5 (not the worst but close).

This really frustrates me because gamespot writes the reviews for the masses. Their purpose is give readers an informed decision of the game they are reviewing in order to help them decide if they should purchase or rent the game or pass it up completely. It really seems like they are abusing their power in that regard.

Gamespot reviews are not solely an opinion that have no repercussion as several readers will not give a game a chance. Gamespot is the number two highest ranking website for all gaming websites so their reviews hold a lot of weight.

Read the review, not the score. Then make your own judgement.

Where did i mention them giving games 9's, where did i mention ign? There is a huge difference between a 9 and a 4.5.

some of those low scores (probably all really) are legit.

zombiu making you backtrack across the entire game and walk from one end to the other just to pad out the playtime on the last level deserved to get the smack down.

they were lucky to get a 4 after pulling that silly ass crap.

I'm going to guess it has something to do with those particular reviewers not having the same opinion as everyone else.

And being that they are opinions I'm going to give zero shakes of a lamb's tail on this issue.

Maybe the GS reviewer had a different opinion than other reviewers on other sites.

i personally have found HUGE inconsistencies in their reviews and therefore i don't take them seriously, only see them for game footage, nothing more.

I do... and I don't see any mistakes...

GS houses my fav reviewer, Kevin VanOrd, but the rest of the staff does a good job as well. Even when I disagree with their reviews, I can usually see where are they coming from with their complaints/praises.

I would not take one persons opinion and run with it anyways but if I based a purchase off of one review it sure as hell would not be Gamespot. They are some of the worst ones on the net right now.

Problem is reviews are supposed to define the quality of a game or lack there of based on factual merits not just opinon.  Opinon should only play a small part when informing others of the factual quality of a product.  Opinion does play a part but it should not be to such a extent that it overrides the actual quality of what you are describing because it's not your cup of tea.

The way gametrailers does reviews is a much more informative and factual representation of how good a game is because they separate the different categories in graphics, gameplay ect and then throw in their personal opinion to the mix and average a final score.  GS just seems to throw out a score based soley on if they like it or not.

They're trying to get away from the old 8.0-10 scale that a lot of other sites use. It's better to go by the phrase used instead of the actual number.

and also I prefer the reviewer to underscore the game rather than giving extra points it does not deserves, this way your expectations are set lower and the game might be a sweet surprise when you play it. But ye read the reviews and not the score alone! numbers can be misleading most of the times

when they give games scores of 9 they are being paid for reviews when they rate games 4.5 people seem to have a problem with that to. damned if do damed if you dont.

A 8 isnt a bad score. Most sites inflate their scores now. what  was once an 8 is now a 9.5 on average. It's too easy to score a 9. I'm glad gamespot is being harder although the luigi's mansion review was lol worthy. It was scored low for being to hard haha. If a game like Luigi's Mansion is too hard for a professional reviewer then they probably shouldnt be reviewing games.

The Resident Evil 6 review was a joke.I didnt relate that review to the game I played at all.

I really disagreed with the SS score I gave that game a 9.5. Same thing with Infamous 2 sometimes GS reviews make no sense at least they got it right with Bioshock Infinite.

I personally think GS should be applauded for judging games based what they think rather than what they think the expectations is and what they think Metacritic will look like. There's been a trend among a lot of game reviewers where big titles and famous franchises often got off easy if they released a bad game.

The GS score SHOULD reflect the reviewers opinion, at the end of the day that's the only honest thing to do. The idea of giving a score 'based on facts' is silly, it doesn't work. Sure you can rate the sound and the graphics, but seriously who cares how good the game looks compared to how fun it is. Sure reviewers will always have a certain bias and a personal preference, it's unavoidable, that why you should read the review rather than just look at the score. That why you'll be able to get a better idea of whether you agree with the reviewers rationale.

I would much rather see GS be blunt and honest in what they think about a given game than have them worry about trying conform to the average opinion.

Anyone who thinks it's possible to give a non biased constructive and totally neutral score is simply being ignorant. Not a single reviewer can do that and of course not you.

Thus judging the game by it's score is sooooo wrong. Want to get educated whether the game is good enough for you to buy? Watch the trailer, read the review and play the demo. Screw scores and metacritics.
