@Renegade_Fury: Sorry I forgot Soul Calibur
Don't worry about it, because I think Namco has too. :(

Hopefully they put out an SC6 once they are finally done with Tekken 7 and Tekken x Street Fighter
-Soul/Tekken (grouped together because both are original IP's by Namco)
-Street Fighter
-Mortal Kombat
-Super Smash Bros (despite getting kind of derailed)
I wish to start the DoA series and was going to with Dimensions, but I had to cancel the order.
Street Fighter > Mortal Kombat > Whatever.
And yeah, I know lots of fighting franchises are better than MK, but it fills a good niche for me. Street Fighter is the series I get invested in, Mortal Kombat is at the opposite end of the spectrum, something I can just play casually with the bros.
Here are the results so far:
Smash and Street Fighter are tied at 42%
Virtua Fighter and MK are tied in last place with 8%
0% for the rest.
Mortal Kombat. I still remember seeing it in an arcade for the first time.
Even after the crap WB just pulled, I still believe Mortal Kombat is my favourite series.
I like it's cast of characters. From "Get over here" Scorpion to "I'll spit acid in your face" Reptile.
I like it's focus on gore and fatalities. And it's always been a decent fighter.
I also have some very fond memories of Killer Instinct on SNES. And I think I had the most fun with SSB and friends.
But I haven't been into the SSB series since Melee on Gamecube.
@mark1974: Shaq Fu was for kicks and giggles to see if anyone liked the game (no one does), and Clayfighter because some people enjoyed it when they were kids.

Really the fatalities had me hook, line and sinker since the first time I saw them. The characters turned out to be epic too with some neat personal moves and of course Sub Zero and Scorpion being 2 of the most recognized fighters of any game.
I also forgot about Brawlhalla. Geez I am forgetting about these awesome game series left and right.

When I think back of series like Mortal Kombat or Killer Instinct I always imagine the old styles: the style where they took like pictures of real people and put them into a game.
I never imagine these games in my head with 3D graphics... do you ? :)
Both had an awesome set of characters. Very recognizable. Very endearing, you just want to try them all out. Other fighting games have a lot of characters that I just never play.
One of the first fighting games I ever owned was Mortal Kombat on Gameboy... But I don't think the Nintendo versions had fatalities ? Or did they ?
@R4gn4r0k: All Mortal Kombat games for Nintendo outside of the very first one had fatalities.
Nice ! It wouldn't be the same otherwise. It was just the gore that was scaled waaaaay back on Ninty consoles.
I also played Mortal Kombat on Genesis.
But boy, Mortal Kombat on Gameboy was so limited. It only had 6 characters to choose from.
But I still had so much fun in the game and played it for such a long time. Because back then it was only once every 6 months or so you would get a new game.
@R4gn4r0k: Even the gore was present uncensored in all Nintendo versions of the game except for with the very first game (admittedly not sure if this also holds true for the Gameboy version, though).
Mortal Kombat blew my mind the first time i saw it. Same with Killer Instinct. That combo thing was just insane! Virtua fighter was the first 3d fighter and was just so much fun. Visually it wasn't as mind blowing as the other two but it was so cool and fun to play. Before all of those, Street Fighter was the best. Nothing was ever better than those in the arcade. Tekken 2 and Soul Calibur were console games for me and that just isn't anywhere near the same.

To me Fighting games require and arcade. A cabinet to put your quarter on for the next play. A real life challenge. When that died so did Fighting games for me. I'm glad they still exist and are enjoyed. I'm getting so nostalgic I might even pick up the new Street Fighter in a few days. But it was a whole experience back then. Go to the mall, eat some pizza at the food court, flirt with girls, go to the arcade and play fighting games. Smoke a joint outside the arcade. Go play some more, love life. Super Smash Bros is something I don't relate to.
I'm a huge fan of street fighter. However, In the end it generally isn't up to the individual in this case. It's about what your immediate community adopts. Fighting games require a local community to drive the player more than most games I feel. If I didn't have a strong street fighter scene with close friends who also play the game, I wouldn't have stuck with it like I have or perhaps even gotten into the game in the first place.
Top two would probably be a toss-up between Street Fighter 2's various iterations and the MK series primarily for the first two games. I didn't really follow either at that point until SF's indirect involvement with Marvel vs Capcom 2, and MK after it's MK9 revival last gen.
Probably my next most favorite fighting game was Virtua Fighter, which I was a fan of from the beginning up until and including Virtua Fighter 3. But it was the Dead or Alive series that caused me to turn my back on the Virtua Fighter series for good.
MK. I don't like fighting games much but i should've bought MKX at launch and get good at it. Maybe i will buy it when they improve their servers this March.
@charizard1605: Yeah for the first game they took out the blood out of the SNES version, right ?
Yup. Brought it back after that once ESRB was instituted.

Lol, people were still getting impaled and ripped to bits, but there was no blood so... go and play this kids !!!
Hahaha, but it's all about the proper context anyway. My kids could experience all that stuff too, as long as they get the proper context.
