i swear to god nintendo give me a console pokemon rpg, no more of this, omg, my pokemon are rendered in 3d garbage.... make it a real game, PBR was like the biggest scam of the generation.
i know i got off topic here but i needed to vent/
Western RPGs. Although in reality there's very few games of the quality of Baldur's Gate, Fallout and Planescape Torment. So it would be wrong to assume the mayority of western RPGs are like such great games.
Shenmue ...Some may call this game an action adventure game, however, I beg to differ.
Aside from Shenmue...wrpgs all the way

Choices 2 and 4 for me. I'd actually say I like tactical gameplay more, but it needs a good system. No other rpgs I've played compare to FF7 and FF Tactics (haven't played Crisis Core or Tactics A2 though :(). We need more quality tactical RPGs, and far better stories for both types.

There were many JRPGs I have quit simply because I didn't like the main character and couldn't even change him out of his punk style clothes clothes. Anyway, do you think tactical RPGs sould be turned back or real time? :?I prefer actual role playing games, like Fallout or Arcanum. JRPGs aren't really RPGs at all; they are just action-adventure games with some character building.
But you know, when you think about it, there haven't been many true role playing games, Western or otherwise. There are so many hybrids and bastardised off-shoot genres that the label "RPG" has lost all of its meaning and the life of the genre's core is all but exhausted, as it barely manages to hang on through various indie development communities.
Hell, the term 'RPG' is used to describe games like 'Mass Effect' these days, and most people think that's just ****ing dandy.
Pokemon FTW! Seriously, it's just addictive.pokemon

Western RPG, although i'll admit that the ONLY western RPGs i've played are KOTOR, KOTOR II, Jade Empire & Mass Effect. I love how what you do has real effects on the story. I like JRPGs alot also but most of the ones I've played (I haven't played alot) feel more like i'm playing a story thats been laid out for me rather than i'm making the story happen.
My perfect game would be a Star Wars Bio-ware/Raven game. Jedi Knight II combat and levels but everything else is KOTOR style (dialog, your impact on the story, story and story telling, etc).
Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines. The only "true" role-playing video game I've ever played in my life. Granted, I've only played a tiny bit of Fallout and haven't touched Baldur's Gate II yet.foxhound_fox
Blasphemy! Best game eva!
But yeah I voted WRPG's too although I do enjoy the other "forms" of rpg's
My favorite RPG is Guild Wars. Its not a full on MMO, it doesn't take as long to build up your characters, so you can have the experience of co-op and guilds and all that but not as much time grinding.DaBrainzThat would still fall under Online RPG since it's online oriented and relives on team work.
Do they really still sell those? I have seen ads and everything for new stuff like DnD 3.5 and MageKnight but I have moved to at least 9 different states 9 we move a lot) and I have NEVER seen a Pen and Paper game. Ever.Nerkcon

Quoted.
For.
Truth.
Dark Heresy is the current game system I'm using.
When a vidya gaem RPG can randomize someone's arm being blown off with such force that the bone shrapnel blinds the player trying to stop the hole that was left in their chest bleeding then I will submit.

You cannot get better roleplaying than pen-n-paper games. The human imagination is far greater than any limited video game world.
What kinds of stores sell them? I have NEVER seen one. And if I found a place to buy them, where could I find people to play them with? You can buy the books in any good bookshop, or failing that Amazon will stock them.
And as for players. Do you have any friends that might be interested? You only need 5 players to have a fun game.
