Been playing some Trine 2 with my daughter recently. Lots of fun. Other than that the only other 2D platformer I've played recently has been Guacamelee. Very enjoyable game, but damn it gets stupid hard towards the end.
Bloodrayne Betrayal. The combat and movement feel a lot like a somewhat stiffer version of the megaman zero games (they even have an air dash), but still fluid enough to pull of some fantastic acrobatic stunts. Incredibly satisfying to launch some poor sap into the air and then knock him and his buddies into an acid pool with a well placed air kick. Nice and challenging too, though with checkpoints and unlimited continues; don't know what the gamespot review was complaining about, there are checkpoints everywhere. Also has an absolutely awesome soundtrack that gets you pumped, as shown:
Some of these are old because I still have not finished them......Ori and the Blind Forest , Volgarr the Viking, No time to explain, Tempo the Baddaas Elephant, The Fall(feels more puzzle than platform though), Shovel Knight(XOne), Super Time Force, Giana Sisters. Having a great time rotating through all these, but I recently finished Ori.
On my wish list, I would like something like Castle Crashers, a side-scrolling beat em up. Those were some of my favorite types of 2D games.
Legit surprise at so many Tropical Freeze mentions in a thread from a website that gave it such a hilariously poor review.
"This is one of the least exciting platformers I've played in some time." "Uninspired and unimaginative" - GAMESPOT 6/10 .........Jesus christ this is one for the ages.
U done good System Wars. TF is a absolutely fantastic and near flawless.
It took the 6th post for someone to mention Ori & The Blind Forest?
But yes, that. Well Super Meat Boy was the one before that, but not sure if I'd consider a 2010 game as recent.
Tropical freeze was good, but to list it as recent? I feel like the only one who still loves this genre.
@TheEroica, brother. Do yourself a favour, load a thumb drive with some choice tunes, stick it in your PS4 and strap one on, because N++ does not let go once it has your balls. fantastic platformer.
As for others...Rayman Legends was trash, but Origins is legit. **** murphy. DKTF is god tier, as is Shovel Knight. Would OlliOlli2 count as a platformer?
Also can't wait for Super Meat Boy to hit my Vita. Though i dunno if it's safe from hitting the wall once it does.
1001 Spikes, Rouge Legacy, Spelunky, Sound Shapes, New Super Luigi U, those all rate too.
I will probably get shovel knight once the physical copy comes out, I haven't gotten it because it's digital only thus far. Looks cool. $20 seems pretty steep for NES graphics though. Unless the game is pretty lengthy?

You are ruining video games >: (
Yes I realize that was a little bit shallow but it's just how I feel :P I will get it though!

It's lovely, a little bloated and fillerish in spots, but it actually has some soul and personality, and goes back to a classic do a lot with simple mechanics. Fantastic teaching by doing levels, fun boss sequences, and a clever spin on pretty tired trope. It even has some decent narrative chops with very little dialogue.
Played all of them on my Vita which I find great for these type of games
Rayman Origins
Murasaki Baby
Dragon's Crown
Guacamelee
Muramasa
LBP
@Chozofication: eff the price brah, that game will charm your pants off... I waited for the vita release myself, but my son played it on 3ds not far after launch and for a 9 year old kid to put it on a pedestal as one of the best games ever, with all the graphics driven games he has to choose from, to me speaks volumes about just how tight that game is.
He's no slouch either... Kid already has an impressive list of games he's gone through... because dad won't let him skip the must play gems. :P
Super Mario Maker.
A game that's not even out yet? Okay.
Don't care. It is Super Mario Bros. with what is said to be a great and intuitive building tool. I've played all the Mario Games and this upcoming one is a childhood dream for many.
I recently bought Art Academy Home Studio out of curiousity. It surprised me how well basics are layed out. I've been straying away from digital work but the fact Nintendo released such a great product makes me wonder if somewhere down the line Nintendo will add the ability to plot out full Mario quests/story/user ability to create world maps/objects.
Off topic, but I was playing the first Donkey Kong Country a couple of months ago, and that game was SO much harder than I thought it would be.
@_Matt_: how is that game? I keep getting tempted, but never pull the trigger...
Also, thanks to all who shared a game... I'm still fascinated by this genre after 30+ years of gaming. It's as if the gaming gods knew what they were doing at the onset of this magical hobby...
@TheEroica: it's very different from a traditional platformer although i can't quite articulate why. Possibly due to the mechanics never getting quite as intensive as a lot of platformers, instead the story taking centre stage.
I would recommend though, i think it was a ps+ game on ps4 a few months back, i would recommend playing in coop too, the second player gets to control the adorable little Wolf.
Well, I can now add Battletoads to my list. Played it yesterday through RareReplay, and wow I was surprised how well it held up. Overall, I find that 2D/sprite based games stand the test of time better than 3D games, graphically speaking.
@Alucard_Prime: oh my goodness yes... Theres a reason why original NES games are legend... Iron clad design.
@_Matt_: thanks brother... I think I'll pick it up. Shame if I missed it on ps+ I don't remember it being there but I've missed games before....
@TheEroica: I just love the simplicity of the controls. It's only jump and attack, and the rest is handled by the game through context sensitive animations and gameplay variations. Sometimes, you just don't need complicated moves(although that certainly is cool as well, I mean it just depends on my mood I guess).
