Just when do you consider a game dead?

I play some games quite a bit with a few hundred active players, and my friends all say the multiplayer is absolutley dead. Not according to me!

How about you?

Probably 500 players and no active matches at any given time, 1000 is fairly slow I guess but not entirely dead. Dead assumes there's no pulse at all, rarely does any game not have at least one match a day, i'd say that would still be alive but I wouldn't expect a quick match.

I'd say it depends on the type of game. If its a major game full of modes and maps and stuff, then at 500 or less 80% of those modes and maps won't be touched in favor of the standby favorites, and it will be hard to find a server with people who aren't hackers or level one million.

With games that are smaller in scope or more indie, 500 is actually pretty decent. Payday for example, tends to only have about that many players a lot of times, but its hard not to find a match or get some players in a level and difficulty of your choosing, because its a smaller indie game with simpler choices.

There are about 0 people playing shattered horizon online on any given night.

There are about 5 people playing serious sam 3 online on any given night.

Not even 500, just a couple peeps at my favorite servers. In Q3, there was a small community of less than 100 peeps in version 1.30 that I cared about. Same goes for the RA3 mod in 1.32. When you get into the really tight-knitt niche mods like InstaUnlagged CTF with railjumps, you start to really rely on networking to set up games rather than expecting someone to already be there. Clans provided an incentive (clan battles) for setting up matches. When that community collapses, I consider the game dead.

Of course in modern games, it depends on the genre. What I described above somewhat applies to an FPS like COD4, but for an "MMOFPS," as I like to call it- like Battlefield BC2, I expect a much larger number of players because.. well you're supposed to get the full war experience.

I'd say when there's less than 2, 000 or so worldwide players, because it makes matchmaking very lengthy sometimes. *coughhaloreachcough*

When no one plays it any more or a very small amount of people play but its to few people in a game that needs alot more players to enjoy. The haunted mod for ut3 was 4 player max coop game so as long as there was one server with 1-3 players was enough for me to enjoy the game for something like shattered horizon which sis player vs player mp shooter that's just not enough people need at bare minimum of 6 people and optimally a good 10+ players to enjoy the game although no one plays that game anymore though so its completly died now. Blur has like 8-30 people playing on the pc version online when I log on and that's enough for me to enjoy it even though its matchmaking since it tells you how many people are playing each gamemode so your not searching for games in the dark in game modes no one is playing.

Yeah, I remember seeing news articles the week CoD4 topped Xbox LIVE charts over Halo 3. Little did I realize then what that would mean from then to the present day for the multiplayer shooter industry. :P

Any game on PS3 that isnt Call of Duty or Battlefield.

The ONLY exception being Uncharted 3/2, but those arent anywhere near mainstream.

Killzone, nobody plays. Sometimes you cant even get into games on Killzone 3 because people arent playing, and when you do its NEVER a full game. According to the Killzone 2 MyKillzone page there are 22 logged in players playing Killzone 2 right now  (ive seen that number as low as 2 before).

Anything else isnt even worth mentioning. Resistance?

Twisted broken netcode Metal? it got to the point where David Jaffe was telling people to do tricks with their router to get the game to work

Starhawk? I was in the beta when it started, there was only like 13 players.

D(ead on arrival)ust514?

The hilarious part is.....even though im trolling, everything im saying is actually true :lol::lol:

As long as I can find as single server with people on it then it isin´t dead as far as I´m concerned, games with matchmaking have it worse though, wich is why servers should always be available for games,at least on the PC.

I don't know the numbers and I mostly play fighting games, but when I wait one or two minutes and I can't get a match going in a mode, that's dead to me. In other genres where you're playing with a bunch of people, maybe you have to wait one or two minutes but at least you can see people filling in. A fighter is 1v1 so when nobody is coming it feels like there is literally nobody but you playing the game.

When I can't find a full match or decent sized match is when I consider the game dead.

Medal of Honor on the 360 usually has around 400 or so players but I never having any problems finding a full match on Combat Mission and Team Assault despite the small community size.

When I literally cannot find a server, and when I do, it has 2 people. There have been a large amount of titles that had me playing for long stretches of time when 3-6 servers were the norm. In a sense, I like that better. It becomes it's own little community with regulars keeping it alive.
