When yo can't get a quality match going. So, CoD,BF, R3, and KZ3 were dead on arrival, while KZ2 lasted a few months and Resistance 2 and Warhawk are still alive.

I consider Shadowrun dead, even though you can still find matches. Takes forever though.

As long as there's still some people playing a game, it's not "dead". Some older games can have really dedicated communities keeping the game alive. It doesn't matter if that community is small, as long as it's there, the game's not dead.
