What made Sony think they could sell a $600 gaming machine?

They are sticking to their longterm plan. Lets see how it does and what they do over the next 8 years or so with it.

Thats the way I see it too,the PS3 is built to last.Console wars typically last years and aren't decided afte the first 2 years.

The Wii on the other I dont know.

PS3 's been selling fine. Not great but its selling still for 600 bucks. HAHA.

People buy the wii for a secondary system also cause its so cheap.

I hear that argument way too much. If the TC and everyone else you say cannot afford one really can't, that just proves that the PS3 is priced too high.  

What was Sony thinking? That money grows off of trees? Did they honestly think the PS3 was going to sell anywhere near as much as the Wii? Were they only catering to the "hardcore"?

 Well... Seeing as how a good Blu-ray in its self cost alone 1000$ I think a PS3 is a steal, not to mention the fact it cost 800$ to produce a PS3...would you rather them charge you 900 or more instead, at least that way they would make a profit.

You guys need to stop thinking short term too, this system is suppost to last 10 years,Its a GREAT piece of tecnology way ahead of its time. and to me ites well worth the money

The PS3 games use Blu-Ray tecnology too

I'm also enjoying Casino Royal in Hi-Def. And The Prestige. And Dead Man's Chest. And there are more to come soon.
I'm a gamer as well, but I'm also a movie freak, and the PS3 offers the perfect combination of good games and awesome movie experience.

It's really easy tbh. If you think it's expensive: don't buy it, wait a year or two. It'll drop in price after a while. 600$ is a good price if you look at what's in it IMO.
