What makes Mario Galaxy worth the number 2 slot?

I'm definitely going to pick Super Mario Galaxy up when I get a chance, but I'm a little hesitant about what makes it so great.

The commercials make it look like a generic yet colourful 3d platformer, but most people think much more highly of it.

What do you guys think makes it such a badass game compared to the AAAs on other systems?

Its very different from any other game out there right now, and it is so polished to the point that it is almost perfect.

And I am no "sheep" thats my honest opinion of the game

- Overall Difficulty is just right, it is never impossible, and to complete it it isn't too easy

it's just so fun

level design is great, looks great, sounds great, great gameplay, a lot of variety

To be honest, I bought the game and just couldn't get into it, it just wasn't very interesting to me. Thats just my opinion, apparently, the people who reviewed the game have a different opinion and probably actually got into the game.Nagidar

Add me to the list of people who didn't like it very much, sure it's a good game, but I still can't be bothered to finish it and don't understand all the praise it gets, it has some neat ideas, nice presentation, but the gameplay is not as good as I expected and collecting stars (yet again) becomes kinda boring after a while, Nintendo need to reinvent Mario and Zelda

both series are stale.

Basically everything he said. But I think another thing is that it's an actual PLATFORMER. It's about going to and from platforms and collecting things, no vehicles, no guns, no jetpacks, none of that rubbish. Just pure platforming, and to be honest it's the only game that does that anymore.

Another thing that no one has mentioned yet is the "Holy crap did I just do that?" moments.

it is, but GTA is a weird situation, because both versions are pretty much exactly the same and yet they have different average scores.

The game is fun, thats it. Its not groundbreaking in graphics or gamplay, its just a very fun game to play with some fun puzzles.

yeah agree, though id say the thing about gravity and the 2D parts were quit innovative(kinda)

It's the closest thing we'll ever get to, if not the true sequel to Super Mario 64.

Seriously Galaxy is one of this gens "legend" games. Along with GTA4, Orange Box and Mass Effect.

Because there really isn't anything wrong with it. Never had any problems with it, and it never got boring at all. There are also some parts that make you go wow.

It deserves an 8.5 imo, its not even close to Mario 64's greatness, and the game doesnt get great until about 70 stars and after.

I was dissapointed but its worth buying if you want a Wii game or you just love Mario.

Very simple. Great control, and great level design.

Second-best game of all time is certainly an exaggeration, IMO, but it's still a very fun game to play.
