yup mods countTeam Fortress 2. Also, would Counter Strike: Source count? If so, it wins easily.

Star Wars Republic Commando.

You clever devilIn multiplayer Quake Wars and Battlefield 2. I'll put QW slightly higher because the vehicle/infantry ratio of power is more balanced and because has more options and deep. The whole game is like a giant Assault mode upgarded X10.
My reasons to discard COD 4 is because Battlefield 2 is more complete and has more focus in teamwork thanks to the squad system, and the engine moves both small urban maps and huge open maps, whereas COD 4 is more like 2 dozens of players battling in a 3 x 3 room.
My reason to keep Quake Wars over TF2, L4D, etc. ...is because you don't have the same amount of weapons, items, devices, deployables, vehicles and maps in these games, and are too simplistic and linear. Sadly most of console players only known about the nerfed QW version, because the game is awesome. And runs at 1080p x 60 fps X8 AA X16 AF in the most crapy PC in existence with better graphics than almost any fps in consoles. But I choice QW and BF2 because the gameplay -BF2 ia already dated-.
Halo 3. I would go into depth, but seriously everybody knows this game. It's just solid and never gets old. Unique, futuristic human and alien(covenent) weapons are a fresh alternative to the standard WWII and MW type weapons. Vehicles, swords+melee fighting, forge maps and custom game types, etc, ect.
Theater Mode recording all your matches is a huge plus also.

Agreed.
My vote goes to Modern Warfare, for it's tight controls(sorry Killzone 2 you failed here), Sabotage and Search & Destroy are just too fun. My main problem with the game, though, is that it lacks community features on the level of Halo 3 & Resistance 2 but I find it's gameplay much more fun.
Well, this gen started in November 2005... and unfortunately, Battlefield 2 and Day of Defeat Source came out before then. So obviously the answer has to be Team Fortress 2. No other game makes online teamwork as necessary, nor does any developers support the community as much.
Halo 3. Haven't played Team Fortress 2, which I'm sure is good, but class based games get old with balance issues from my experience.
Its true BF2 wins this.Battlefield 2. TF2 doesn't even come close to the amazing experience this offers.

I'd say TF2.
Even next to games like BF2.
Its become some sort of phenomenon, and unlike every other online FPS out there. It has its own distinct personality.

Honorable mention goes to Left 4 Dead.
Aversarial cooperative, emergent and structured dynamic gameplay in an online FPS.
