Heavy Rain, Alan Wake and Zack & Wiki 2 are the ones I'm looking forward to the most.

I miss the Lucusarts Adventure games a lot though.

Quake killed the adventure genre. After that, the market was doomed to revolve around FPSs.

The market is oversaturated with shooters because they're highly played both by hardcore and casual gamers. However (IMO) there only needs to be one truly great Adventure game and people will forget about shooters for a while.

Think about the reason Killzone 2 gets hype while Heavy Rain never did. Casual gamers said "How can we hype it when we know nothing about it?" They're noobs to the genre, that's all. Something needs to introduce them.

Having said that, the fact that Killzone 2 is receiving better hype than Heavy Rain is testimonial to how dominant casual gamers are.

Have you read any of the posts by so-called "hardcore gamers" here? Any game that isn't FPS, contain guns, or doesn't have explosions get bashed ENDLESSLY.

The FPS playing casual is now the main audience for gaming. ANd there are now so many of them that they have convinced themselves they must be "teh hardcore" and "teh real gamarz!!" Meanwhile, because of them, great original games get ignored, while every single half-arsed FPS that comes out is a huge seller.

Exactly! And those so called "hardcore gamers" are really just casuals who mostly started gaming one or two generations ago.

I forgot Metroid Prime actually. The third game had some damning environmental puzzles in it.

uncharted is pretty closebigLLL

Is it? I haven't played it. It looks like Tomb Raider to me.

It's not even FPS anymore. Any game that's high polished, has cool explosions, shiny graphix, and lots of blood gets extremely high reviews and sells millions. Whereas games like Phychonauts get ignored. It's completely insane.

2009 seems to be good for adventure games. The ones I am excited about is Vampyre Rain , Mata Hari (from creators of Fate of atlantis) and Gray Matter (from creators of Gabriel Kinghts).

I think there was a large casual following for the old adventure games that swung over to FPS in the 90's. Developers are just focusing on what sells, and the casuals dictate what sell.

You can't call yourself a football fan if you hate all but one team. You aren't a football fan in that case...you are a team fan. What hobby or interests do you have other than FPS/games. Anything at all that you are passionate about and devote time to? I can provide a more suitable comparison than the football analogy above.

If you like FPS exclusively, I would argue that you aren't a real "gamer" or a hardcore gamer"...you are a FPS fan or a hardcore FPS player.

Maybe I'm nitpicking, but as someone who has played games since consoles were invented, grew up in an arcade, and can't remember a single time in my life when games weren't around...I find it a little insulting to hear people calling themselves "hardcore gamers" but then bashing almost every game. No self respecting gamer would bash a game because it dared to have a story and character development, dared to try something new or differnet or because it doesn't have the best graphics, explosions or is single player only. I'm sorry, but these people are not REAL gamers. To me, real gamers care about great games of all types. If you only care about one type of game, or bash games based on anything other than the experience they offer and how well they acheive what they are trying to accomplish...you aren't a real or "hardcore" gamer. You are just someone who plays games. A casual.

There is nothing wrong with that. I just feel people need to accept what they are instead of spending so much time convincing everyone they are "hardcore" about everything all the time. Going back to my original comparison, just accept that you aren't a "football fan", you just like the home team and couldn't care less about the sport as a whole. Again, there is nothing wrong with that.

If people like this were around 20+ years ago, then the majority of the best games that this industry was built on never would have existed in the first place.

blame microsoft for overdoing the fps on their consoles...darn halo...back when goldeneye was around there was still a great balance and variety and goldeneye satisfied anybodies shooter fix

i mean seriously you've played one shooter ....you've played them all...

Goldeneye is way better than halo!...only thing halo added is the ability to have online...put goldeneye online and fugged a bout it

Those are six games coming from vets of the adventure genre (many from Lucasarts, one from Jane Jensen, maker of Gabriel Knight), if you can't wait for them though, just look at the freeware adventure games, including Nelly Cootalot, A Tale of Two Kingdoms, Kings Quest 2 remake and many, many more.

Very few of those are true adventure games, however. Most of them are Action-Adventure.

:) Yup though Penny Arcade is undeniable in the true vein of Adventure genre wouldn't ya say ?

Though to my knowledge has kind of poor sales. :?

Point and clicks died when people discovered the ability to render 3d visuals. They found much more interesting, and actually fun games, like Quake, doom and Starcraft. (And Duke Nukem =D)

Face it, you can bash FPS all you want, but it really is hardcore, I played shooters on the NES with my light gun and moved onto windows shooters. As long as you only get the good ones, you shouldn't get sick of them.

FYI Adventure games are boring as hell.

People who like to think don't find them boring at all.

This. What people don't realize is they're alive and well, just not in the spotlight.

Have you read any of the posts by so-called "hardcore gamers" here? Any game that isn't FPS, contain guns, or doesn't have explosions get bashed ENDLESSLY.

The FPS playing casual is now the main audience for gaming. ANd there are now so many of them that they have convinced themselves they must be "teh hardcore" and "teh real gamarz!!" Meanwhile, because of them, great original games get ignored, while every single half-arsed FPS that comes out is a huge seller.

hey hey hey do i go around bashing your favorite genre...whatever it might be?

whats so wrong with liking FPS exclusively?

True and I like playing all the genres

xbox killed that genre. sony and nintendo been trying to revive it with games like heavenly sword, zelda, and ratchet and clank, all consoles went the way of fps genre though because of halo 1,2 and 3 and games like it

I'm finding my fair share of Action Adventure games. I enjoyed Assassin's Creed and can't wait for the second. I want the new Prince Of Persia badly :). And the new naruto game for the PS3 is looking sweet so far.
