Hello friends,

So it seems that majority of third person games this gen are cinematic movie games. here in this thread we discuss what are the third person games today that are not movie games. shall we? games that released during this gen.

  • Hitman games: Hitman games are first and foremost thing came to my mind when talking about third person games that are not scripted, hand holdy or movie games. those games require strategy, multiple way to complete mission and looking into future Hitman 3 is only third person game coming out that looks interesting along with Mafia remake.
  • Resident evil 2 remake: I dinot liked it much as it was average short game but its a third person game that is not movie game neither its hand holdy. i gave it to that.
  • Star wars jedi fallen order: Another third person game that release last year that is not movie game. starting is very scripted and hand holdy feel like a movie game but after that its game that based on exploration and challange. although its one and done game.
  • Batman arkham: Batman series is another third person action adventure series that is not movie game. sure it has simplify combat but it focus on exploration, completeing objectives without interrupting cutscenes.

Im pretty sure i will also add Mafia definitive edition once it release. unless they turn it into movie game.

so friends, what third person games this gen that are not movie games? lets discuss

Could you perhaps describe a bit more what you mean by a movie game? I don’t understand how a game like Mafia is not a movie game, but say the GTA V is. Could you walk us through your reasoning?

Any game with cutscenes is a movie game, like Halo, man Halo is one of the worst movie games.

The only real games are NES/SNES and Genesis games, before cutscenes took over.

Play some real games scrubs

For the record, the correct term is Cinematic Driven Games, not movie games and that term was made up by fanboys. Telltale comes to mind how they make cinematic driven games and ND also do this with their games but depending on the game itself.

This hate for "movie games" - whatever the f*** it is - continues to baffle me. Many, many video games have cinematic set pieces. Done well and in moderation, they can be a nice change up to a game's pacing. Where's the cut-off point? I don't get it at all.

I don’t think Telltale‘s games and the games ND makes have much in common mechanically. There’s no traditional gameplay in Telltale games (I have only played the Walking dead btw). ND games are pretty traditional games built around TPS-mechanics. Just very polished. Isn’t Uncharted, Mafia, Fallen Order etc pretty similar when it comes to balancing story and gameplay?

@madrocketeer: In this goofball world we've created, everyone has their own definition for what they're talking about, so I bet my interpretation won't land with most but I define it as a "game" that places the focus on story and cinematic techniques/principles over gameplay.

I just played and finished uncharted 4 for the first time, and based on my personal definition it clearly sits in cinematic camp vs something like Guacamelee. My unpopular opinion has been that uncharted 1 is the most game of the 4 main ones, and therefore is my favorite of the series. But I also get bored quickly, so going back to well on any property is going to yield diminishing returns for me faster than most.

The push to make games more like movies has created some beautiful moments, but in my opinion always seems to underwhelm vs great gameplay. I miss classic Blizzard where you would play several missions of the game and then you were rewarded with an awesome mini movie. That's how I prefer it.

Third person games covers a LOT of games, perhaps the majority of games. I can list a whole ream of games such as:

- Breath of the Wild

- Mario Odyssey

- Astral Chain

- Gears 5

- Resident Evil 2 Remake

Etc., etc., etc.

You could probably even list games that allow you to play in both perspectives as well such as Forza, Forza Horizon, Fallout 4, etc. Anyway I think you get my point.

Their stories are the most generic 'family member dies, get revenge' type

But The Division is on a new level of bad. All the cutscenes are annoying, it has people yelling at people, acting like damn morons... There is no entertainment watching them.

I just enjoy the gameplay lol

Dark Souls 3

Bloodborne

fromsoft > Jedi Fallen Order good game but combat is lacking in variety. the sequel should be a big improvement.

haven't played Sekiro shadow die twice yet but might pick it up doing the summer sale. super hyped for Elden Ring but who knows when it will come out. Already played Demon's Souls so can live without the remake as I have no attention of picking up a ps5 for it. would get it on pc but see that happening for years.

Shadow of the Colossus only has 4 cut-sense over a minute? very little filler good boss rush game.

Platinum games. still need to play Nier Automata but waiting for a very good sale sense Square never patch it on pc and it needs a fan made mod. the guy should have never released that mod 24 hours after release maybe if it got negative reviews it would had been patched.

I can help. When you don't own a PS4 and Last of Us Part II just released with Ghost of Tshushima on the way next month, one can get very ass-sore and make passive aggressive threads like OP did.

Good, i cannot stand Tomb Raider either. Don't even compare the two. Tomb Raider is nothing else but a benchmark to optimize your gpu/cpu overclock.

Just about every survival game, platformer, sports game, racing game, fighting game, beat em ups, hack n' slash, action adventure, open world, sim, management, RTS, etc. etc. are in 3rd person, and many of them are fantastic and don't have many cutscenes.

We all know Ghost has no imagination; publicly slobber on Doom, Metro and STALKER, shit on everything else, rip off other people's shtick, like Cup's meme pictures, repeat. It's something we just accept in System Wars, and occasionally make fun of.

I was speaking more generally. There just seem to be a lot of hate for "movie game" going around - the definition of which is completely arbitrary, as the above post has so helpfully established - and I'm just not sure why the obsession.

@madrocketeer: I wouldn't say it's completely arbitrary. There is clearly a common thread to the disdain people are expressing, but the problem won't be properly addressed and corrected if they don't agree on how it's defined.

It's probably some formula that equates to:

If game X sum <30% cutscenes = hate

But it could also be that some people are no longer enamored with graphics, or don't want to play a movie, and desire for that money and talent to be focused on gameplay and mechanics instead.

The good thing is that many other teams are ready to take the mantle. Expensive movie games? Probably less so.

yeah its just fanboys calling them that because xbox has nothing to compete with so they call them movie games to make them feel better. there is no cut off point with sony first party.

can't wait for xbox first movie game so i can see these same guys praising there movie game.

thing is every game thats called a movie game has great game play. uncharted gameplay is fun as hell so is horizon zero dawn, god of war and days gone. all of above are called movie games but how can some of them be called that when there is over 30 hours of gameplay except for uncharted. how many 30 hour movies have you watched? days gone has over 70 hours of game play but its a movie game some how.

@gifford38: Well I can't speak to Days Gone or Horizon, but I can with the other two. For God of War I remember gameplay being more prevalent, it's just that I didn't care for the gameplay. I would personally put Spiderman above GoW in the movie argument, but uncharted definitely belongs. The path those games took has clearly gone from more game to more movie throughout the years.

With uncharted, most of the experience is walking around and hanging off the side of a building or cliff. The gunfights (at least in 4) are far less frequent, and puzzle solving has dwindled as well. If memory serves, there were whole scenes where you just walk around looking at random objects. If that's what you call great gameplay...I just don't think we will ever see eye to eye.

I've never seen a 30 hour movie per se, but things that used to be movies are now tv shows; so you argue that game of thrones, walking dead, etc are just giant movies. Either way, these games are clearly made to resemble movies over games and are frequently made by wannabe film makers.

@gifford38: Well I can't speak to Days Gone or Horizon, but I can with the other two. For God of War I remember gameplay being more prevalent, it's just that I didn't care for the gameplay. no i call that hdd loading the next scene. its another way instead of the force walking parts.

if you notice like in spiderman the next section of story is always after those parts like the puzzles to unlock more tech in the lab. even more enemy's on the over all map.

@gifford38: I'm talking about the scene in 4 where you walk through the house looking at random antiques. That is no loading screen, it offers next to zero gameplay and only serves to fill in the so so story.
