We go by gamespots reviews here at system wars, but outside of SW I usually use several sources to come to an average opinion of the game.

Burning-Sludge

What happens Game Spot doesn't review a game, does it not exist?

They go down to Davy Jones's locker along with Bootstrap Bill, Banjo & Kazooie, and Metroid Prime Trilogy

Ahhh starting a new topic to try and prove your concept?

Note that I said in System Wars that you can talk about other reviews conversationally, but in terms of addressing amount of AAAA,AAA,AA,A games, flops etc Gamespot reviews are all that counts, in this particular forum.

clone01

yeah, apparently lolfaqs has found a way to dodge an ip ban.

Now you say it, this guy does sound a little like lolfaqs.

Explains a lot.

Third option. I usually check several reviews and user reception looking for general flaws.

Really? Because so far only 3 out o 16 voters agree with you.

Yes, when deciding the quality of a game, my point (which you seem to avoid at all circumstances) is that this is SW, and here only the GS scores matters

In your opinion and the opinions of 2 other people so far.

for the most part, its accepted that GS scores are used for official scorekeeping on this site. i'm sure you remember that when you were here on your last account.

I generally use them as a filter. The Games that are below A I usually stay away from. A & higher I'll check out.

I try to get as much info as possible. Checking metacritic, and lookin at just about every respected sites score for that particular game. But as for one sites score I rely on most. Probably IGN or Giantbomb.

Before I buy a game and want to find out how well made the game is and if it suits my tastes. I first read Ign's written review, then I read Gamespot's summary. After that I look at the summarys at metacritic and lastly I look at player reviews.

I never use reviews.

I've only boughten two games based off people's reviews, and I didn't like either. The games were The World Ends With You, and Oblivion IV. Oblivion is okay, it seems to be getting better, but I didn't like The World Ends with you at all.

Why isn't there a "none of the above" option? Since I buy most of the games that come out, anyways, I form my own opinion. Reviews can be good to give people a general idea, but shouldn't be used as a final say in what a person buys, or thinks of a game. There have been too many times I have been burnt by reviews. I have bought games that reviewers have said the game is just too awesome to pass up, and I ended up hating it. On the other side, I have avoided games for years based on reviewers saying they weren't that great. I do look at reviews, if for nothing more than to make sure a game isn't broken, and what not. But, not for an opinion on what I should buy, or not buy.

If only more reviewers were like Yahtzee...At least he's honest, and doesn't focus on graphics like everyone else does. He talks about parts of the games that most don't talk about.

I look at the general consensus of the major sites. (That doesn't mean "look at Metacritic's average score") Giant Bomb's reviews probably hold the most weight with me; although I don't always agree with them (not that it matters), I think they often have some really valuable insight.

reviews carry 'some' weight. that's why they are here. that's why they are paid to write them.

that's why fanboys run rabid arguing over .1 difference between games or console versions.

like i said reviews, the score, the video and the written review. i do go through them. because they do carry some weight, not to mention reading other player reviews (like they do here on Gamespot.)

you can tell when their is a fanboy who purposely goes about giving genuinely good games a 1.0. so you can discard those reviews (if you call em' that.).

personally i follow:

  1. Gamespot
  2. IGN
  3. Gametrailers
  4. G4TV.

Those are the videogame sites i follow.

The quality of a game is not something I can decide, unless I were to design it myself, and even then there would be a minimum and maximum.

Agreed, but I also think there's nothing special about a random user's review and a corporate site's review. A site like gamespot doesn't have any special insight into the quality of a game that a random gamer doesn't have.

I find numerical scores useless, and written text reviews nearly as useless.

With enough research (i.e. videos, previews, etc.) I can tell if I'm going to like a game or not before I buy it. Demos also help a lot too. Without demos, I'm pretty much lost in terms of whether or not I can "know" that I will like the full game. Granted, some catch me by surprise (positively and negatively), but overall, my non-reliance on "professional" review sources works really well. It allows me to make a sound decision based on my own tastes, and not the tastes of others (which are obviously not going to compare to mine).

Though, if I were to choose a review source that gave me some very "accurate" recommendations (in terms of whether or not its worth looking in to), Yahtzee's Zero Punctuation has only failed me once (Painkiller). Otherwise, his "recommendations" have been pretty sound.

Critics consensus>One Reviewer. Always.hiphops_savior

In what regard?

An aggregate score is incredibly flawed and ultimately meaningless. What value does an averaged opinion of individual's enjoyment do to properly represent what is contained within a game, and how it functions (i.e. framerate, glitches, etc.)?

When you choose to follow a single source (i.e. Gamespot, Eurogamer, etc.) you come to understand the complete gamut of the particular reviewer's tastes and get an idea for the standards of the source. The advantage of this is that it allows you to see what a game contains and make a sound value judgment, compared to your own tastes and preferences, of whether or not its worth buying, renting, borrowing or even playing.

Anyone who buys games based on their Metacritic average numerical score is probably going to have a higher probability of disappointment than someone who reads previews and reviews from a single source and compares the textual record from that source and compares it to what they know about themselves. Not only that, but they'll have no idea what the game is about, since all they are doing is looking at the score, and not reading the reviews to see what is actually good and bad about the game.

I don't care about them, if I'm gonna buy a game then I'll buy it anyways regardless of what reviews say but if a game gets a higher score than expected then it'll be probably better than I'm expecting which is true most of the times for my case.

I usually just buy games that I like regardless of what the score is since my mind is already made up by that time. As for games that I don't know about or not interest than I usually look at gametrailer review to see if it something that I might be willing to puts some hours into or not before making my ultimate purchase.

I tend to read Game Informer, and if a game catches my eyes based on game type and style, I read into it more on Metacritic.

I look at anything and everything then try to decide for myself if i'll like the game or not. For example, I read the IGN review of Prototype and it seemed overly harsh. Then I watched the Gamespot review and it seemed more convincing and made it seem like a game I'd like. The IGN review turned out to be crap. I even think Gamespot could have been MORE generous. I wasn't going to get Demon's Souls due to some reviews harping on about extreme difficulty. Then some other reviews made me think again and the fact that many people here were importing it and loving it caused me to give it a go and I didn't regret it.

I check the average score on Metacritic and GameRankings, then read the review on Eurogamer, then watch the video reviews on IGN and GameTrailers.

I dont really look at reviews as being something to decide my purchase, all games that catches my interest during earlydevelopment i tend to keep track of them looking at videodemonstration of ingame play and previews along the way. if the game scores below what I anticipated i will still play the gameto see what went wrong and form my own opinion on the game. Most gamesI play matches the reiew it deserves. :)

I actually get a lot of my games based on what my friends are getting and what you guys are recommending. For example I would've never even heard of Demons Souls if it wasn't for this forum and now it's one of my current favorites.

Except this "professionalism" is tainted by the fact that developers throw lots of money at review sights in the form of advertising dollars and, in some cases, even outright bribes or gifts.
