Ensemble's seminal Age of Empires series of games is notable for being one of the most consistently well made, high production, and genre leading series of games ever created. While Ensemble was around, the Age of Empires games were notable for being the best Real Time Strategy titles around. And while their shuttering by Microsoft is a crime against gaming that can never be forgiven, we can at least honor their magnum opii by discussing it extensively.

So.... what Age of Empires game did you feel was the best one of them all?

We have Age of Empires, and its expansion, Rise of Rome.

We have Age of Empires II, and its expansion The Conquerors.

We have Age of Empires III, and its expansions, The Warchiefs and The Asian Dynasties.

We also have Age of Mythology, and its expansion The Titans.

Which one do you find the best?

II+Conquerors all day, every day. When I was a kid we only had one computer and my brothers, my dad, and I all constantly fought over it for that game.

Age of mythology is my favourite and I still play it. I never played aoe2 when I was younger however I recently bought it and made it look nicer with mods and it's a very good game.

Is Age of Mythology just a spin-off of Age of Empires? It is just too bad that there was never a sequel to that game.

I think i played Age of Mythology the most, the gameplay is just so fluid, simple and so beautifully constructed, i have always replayed it from time to time. In AoE 3 i really enjoyed playing the campaign, and that magnificient soundtrack will always be stuck in my head. Then there's AoE 2 which i want to play again right now because of this thread. F*k, i love them all, i can't pick.

Nope, AoM is the better game. The single player mode is hands down superior, I'm sure you wouldn't disagree on that. Having three distinct civilizations with god powers really added depth to the multiplayer. AoE2 is as bare-bones as it comes by today's standards and offers little outside the rock-paper-scissor combat of a dated RTS game.

AoM was my 2nd favorite. Too unbalanced for multi though. And the graphics are already dated. AoE 2 still looks great thanks to its unique look.

What was unbalanced about it online? The Titans I'll admit was busted, but what was wrong with the stock game? Any specifics?

I was talking about Titans (Hate playing vanilla games once an exp comes out :P) the only problem with the vanilla was the Set animal rushes and the Loki Hersir rushes.

I didn't like it. It felt clunky and you can't build closed off cities because a train track runs though everything.

It's highly disappointing after Age of Empires II and Age of Mythology, but in its own right, and especially with the expansions, it's a pretty great game. Considering that Steam has it available with all the expansions, I say go for it, it's a pretty neat deal. Just don't go in expecting the greatness of Age of Empires 2 or Age of Mythology.

The Age of Kings and The Conquerors. No question at all. It was the perfect combination of history and story, combat and city-building. I probably put a good couple years of my life into those games, and I honestly never went online. RTS games should have never given up on the sprites, I haven't enjoyed a single one as much as AOEII and Starcraft except Total Annihilation. Would love to start up playing it again. And I should also consider it more for my "best of all time" list.

I got it and all the expansions for ten cents like a year ago when they were having some deal on Games for windows live. It was actually an amazing sale, got Deus Ex for $1, Bioshock for $2, and there were amazing deals on games I already had too.

Age of Empires are incredible games, brah :P I recommend you grab the game off Steam as it's on sale today (too bad it's the third one, and noth the second one, which is widely acknowledged to be the greatest RTS ever made, and one of the greatest games ever made period. As this thread should be a testamenet to :P)

Aw, that's really unfortunate. If those games had managed to click with you, they would probably have ben all the games you would ever have needed.

Haha, I agree. I liked AoE1, but after RoR, it is impossible to go back to the vanilla game. No unit queueing, smh

Yeah, I didn't bother mentioning the expansions since I had a similar opinion before I played them.

I could try the core games again for the sake of finding if my opinion's changed, but I really don't feel like playing AoE 1 without unit queing when I have the expansion.

Age of Empires 1 consumed my childhood; played everyday after school. I got it for free in a Nutri-grain box.
