For it's time, AOE 2 was the best. 3 is clearly better as far as mechanics, although I prefer the medieval/ pre-colonial native american settings of 2 much more. I'd say Age of Mythology was about equal to the others, my only complaint is that I found the campaigns in 2 much better.

The Age of Kings and The Conquerors.

No question at all. It was the perfect combination of history and story, combat and city-building. I probably put a good couple years of my life into those games, and I honestly never went online.
RTS games should have never given up on the sprites, I haven't enjoyed a single one as much as AOEII and Starcraft except Total Annihilation.

Would love to start up playing it again. And I should also consider it more for my "best of all time" list.Zeviander

Yeah I enjoyed AOE 2 the best followed by AOE3 but that is because i never played aoe1 back in the day (my old 386sx 16mhz wouldn't run it and by the time I got a pentium class cpu AOE2 was just coming out. )

The better game than AOE though was Empire Earth 1 and Rise of Nations .... those two games alone were better than AOE ever was!

Lets also not forget how sequels of rts games like warcraft 3 and aoe 3 put smaller unit caps on everything. They made the games feel less like armies and more like squads... I couldn't stand that about those games and the trend continued unfortunatly.

Age of Empires 1 consumed my childhood; played everyday after school. I got it for free in a Nutri-grain box.

you sure that wasn't the demo? There is way they were giving away full $50 games in a cereal box. Those things were usually demos. You were probably young and didn't realize it.

[QUOTE="limpbizkit818"][QUOTE="tagyhag"] AoM was my 2nd favorite. Too unbalanced for multi though. And the graphics are already dated. AoE 2 still looks great thanks to its unique look.

tagyhag

What was unbalanced about it online? The Titans I'll admit was busted, but what was wrong with the stock game? Any specifics?

I was talking about Titans (Hate playing vanilla games once an exp comes out :P) the only problem with the vanilla was the Set animal rushes and the Loki Hersir rushes.

O man, the Set animals  Good times. When you play any RTS there are always going to be players that rush plus the set animals were patched after launch. As for the Hersir's that was just something you had to be ready for and defend against. Not many players were good at it. Look at Starcraft 2 today: for every strategy that gets hot online someone finds a defense for it. That's were the strategy in real time strategy comes into play.

That being said I thought Titans broke the game. I used to play competitive and stopped after it came out.

As for this topic's debate: Gamespot review score AoM 9.2>AoEII 9.1

Edit: Patch notes 1.07. Maybe you stopped playing before this came out?

  • Huntable Animals converted by Set Priests now have their attack reduced by 40% and hitpoints reduced by 35%.
  • Hyena of Set, Ape of Set and Gazelle of Set population cost increased from 1 to 2.
  • Auroch of Set and Boar of Set population cost increased from 2 to 3.
  • Elephant of Set and Rhinoceros of Set population cost increased from 3 to 4.
  • Ape of Set cost increased from 3 favour to 4 favour.

You need to play online (there are still people playing). This is like saying you love fighting games but only play against AI. Does not compute.

Age of Kings and The Conquerors, no question about it. Then Age of Mythology and the Titans. AOE3 was a good game in its own right, but it's not until the expansions where it really comes to life. There was a reason why Age of Empires didn't become popular until Age of Kings. AOE1 had massive fundamental problems including pathfinding and AI issues.

Not necessarily, Age of Empires 2 was the rare RTS that was as fun single player as it was multi.

I actually played AOE + ROR the most. I just prefer the time period units etc. AOE2 is without a doubt a much more polished game though. I would love to have a new game in the originals time period, I know Online sort of is but it's meh. :(

Once you learn how to play aoe2:tc in a multiplayer style/setting, it kind of ruins singleplayer. The AI is so fantastically bad, :(

Wow really? lol you must be a pirate. Regarding sprites, I thought so too until about 2005 when tastefully good-looking 3D RTS games came out, like Battle for Middle-Earth. You still prefer sprite animations in 2012?

Yup, the AI was god awful. Thankfully you could download AI mods for the single player. I would give AoM the nod for SP if only because it had a 30+ mission campaign that was a little more interesting than the piece-meal scenarios offered in AoE2. Not that they weren't fun to play, it's just that AoM being a spiritual successor rightfully offered more content.

By the way can i please ask a slightly different question? What *IS* the best Age of Empires game? That is, for newcomers. Alternatively, pretend all these games were released at the same time. What is *the* Age-Of game to jump into now, considering the available multiplayer communities?

I know a lot of people prefer Age of Empires 2, but for me it's the 3rd one. It had much more depth to it I though. The second one was still great though and Age of Empires is my favorite RTS series, it's not the most refined but I like history and this game is right up my ally. I love it.

Age of Empires II remains the best, but it might not be th best introduction for newcomers. I suggest starting with Age of Mythology, then moving to Age of Empires II. If you like that, you might want to check out (the largely disappointing) Age of Empires III. The first Age of Empires game is all but unplayable at this point.

Thank you charizard. I've actually played Age of Empire II before but not Age of Mythology. I just thought that maybe the newer games allow easier access to online matches, or have more players who are not so expert that they will kick your ass before the feudal age.

The conquerors (expansion from 2) is the better of those, haven't even touched Mythology. But Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds is pretty similar in gameplay, so it's a good option too.

AoM is best mainly because of the huge variation between races. In AoE (any of them) the main difference is some units, but with AoM everything is different, including how you collect resources, build buildings, and units you can build. That is my biggest gripe with most modern RTS games, the races mostly play the same apart from some unit variations.

I remember Galactic Battlegrounds. It was made on the same engine and even had the same menus. But I never liked it that much.

I think they are must have RTS for Star Wars fans, also they introduced aerial battles so there's that.
