Have fond memories of playing this too. I even wrote a walkthrough for it with a pen and paper but no idea what happened to it.

-Unreal-
That game was pretty hard huh. My friend/cousin played it and I used to slag him for it because I thought it looked crap. It's actually a pretty good game. Has a good sense of adventure in it.

Yeah it certainly isn't a pretty game which may have put a lot of people off at the time. Pretty sure it's like 2 or 3 frames a second. :P When you actually play it though it's a great story, MASSIVE challenge and damn good fun. Definitely a great sense of adventure and very non-linear gameplay. Perhaps it's just nostalgia but it's still up among my favourite RPG's and that's even after playing it again a few years ago.

That's one hell of a first RPG to play. I would have probably been disappointed with most other rpgs if that was my first.

Wiimotefan

Ah yeah, it's pretty much the only RPG i played when i had my SNES back then. My first game that also had over 100 hours clocked in. I don't know how i managed to get everything when the game was in English. Back then i didn't understood a single word in English, i suppose it was my determination to find the rumored Gogo at the time.

Wow thats pretty hardcore man. English is my first language and I tried playing an RPG in Japanese one time. I didn't make it too far haha!

Even in recent years i tried playing a Japanese RPG (Romancing Saga 3), to no success!

What's cool about me with FFVI is how when i managed to learn English properly, i played it through again and to finally understand the dialogue between characters made me enjoy the story even more. Of course back then i could visually figure what it was about in the end, just really stopping Kefka from destroying the world a second time.

Yeah I was wondering how that went over, not being able to read the story and all, but I guess you could get the main idea without the words. Still cool that you got to go back and get the full experience. Such an amazing game!

It's hard to explain but, it's all visual. Despite not knowing a damn words i was just remembering key words. Short example, at some point you reach the Imperial capital, Vector. You kinda remember town names in those games so for someone like me who didn't know English it was one of my easier way to progress through the story. I'd see the word Vector in dialogue and instantly knew i had to go there.

Sadly though, i still ended up blocked in certain area of the story like in the Opera House. I don't know if you remember the early boss "Vargas" from Mt. Kolt. To kill in one hit when you get Sabin you just have to use his Pummel blitz to win the match. But not on my end, no no i grinded all the way to level 30-35 on Mt. Kolt trying Vargas countless times, until one day i killed him only using sabin's physical attack. I killed him before the doom timer on my head ran out, even went to the point Sabin had to use his desperation move, Tiger break, when near death.

Lemme tell you when i discovered how to do Blitz years later i felt pretty stupid but it was my greatest achievement back then. :P

Pool of Radiance! One of the first gold box games on PC. Or at least tha't the first one I can remember. I played a lot of NES games before that, but they were mostly Mario and zelda, I don't think I tried any real RPG on the NES until much later.

I believe the game is considered an abandonware so just google the game name + abandonware and you should find it.

First RPG i played and the reason I fell in love with RPGs, they don't make them like they used to. 06

And with good reason they don't make it like they used to. Turn based menus was the only way to play an RPG with the technological limitations of the day. With todays tech to make he role playing experience more interactive and immersive, archic game design need not apply.

Pokemon Yellow

I began to play more RPG's after this game. :D

Zelda II: The Adventure of LInk for NES, I remember I got stuck in some area and never finished it., but I had played the game for a ton of hours. I don't remember playing any other RPG's on NES (but of course I was about 6 years old when I was playing NES). I'm sure wherever I got stuck would seem like a joke now. My next two were Final Fantasy VI and Secret of Mana on SNES Honestly because of the time commitment involved I haven't played many of the top RPG's. I've usually just played a few on each system I've owned.

I vaguely remember renting Pokemon Blue from Blockbuster, a friend giving me Red, buying Crystal, and Yellow fit in there somewhere. In any case, it was Pokemon. Good times.

Dungeons and Dragons on the Intellivision. I used to love the noise it made when you were getting close to an enemy. Nothing like being chased by a snake when you are out of arrows.

Holy F*** that was my first RPG. There were two of them, but the second one was really, really f***ing hard and fun.

I came back here to this thread to post that as I remembered an even earlier RPG I played, which I was going to post. I remembered discussing it with friends last night. I explored my memories /journey of my first RPG and remembered this cIassic. I believed my first RPG was Dragon Warrior, but that was my second and a few years later. Your post confirmed I'm not the only one that played D&D on Intellivion. BTW, it was an AWESOME game.

There were two D&D games for Intellivision that I recall, but the second one was definitely an RPG and the one I'm posting about although I played both. The first one was more Adventure style, but still fun. Second one was great for it's time. Like an early version of Skyrim, lol.

Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Treasure of Tarmin! Here's some pics, I'm so happy someone else here played it, lol.

Mine was Paper Mario as well, but I really fell in love with them with Mario and Luigi Superstar saga, but to be honest I only enjoy Nintendo RPGs, I only really play Paper Marios, Mario and Luigis, and Pokemon. I've tried to get into other core RPGs like the Final Fantasy, but I just didn't find it fun. I may try Ni No Kuni though, that game looks awesome.

Final Fantasy VII, played it at a friend's house for a tad and promptly ticked him off by not getting the systems and stupidly attacking one of my own team mates while fighting Ruby Weapon. In hindsight I consider the game very, very flawed but it was a revelation of sorts at the time.

The PS1 was my first console after my Atari2600, so I got into RPGs late. My first was Final Fantasy VIII.
