I love FPS as much as the next person I am going to get Killzone 2 in 8 days, 11 hours and 22 seconds :) (Sorry been counting every last second), I have Resistance, Fear 1, Fear 2, Bioshock, Rainbow Six Vegas, Crysis, Call of Duty 4, Doom 3, Quake 4, Call of Duty WAW, Farcry, Farcry 2 etc now my question do you think it's possible to innovate with FPS how would a company go around changing the concept or making it different than others FPS if it is possible ?

I found Fallout 3 to be kinda of like a good start it's like a mixture of FPS and RPG which is great and innovative, and Mirror's Edge as well the concept is a little different then most FPS and is a fresh change even though Mirror's Edge did not do to well in ratings..

Don't get me wrong I love FPS I am just wondering what a company can do to change the genre for the better if it's possible or are FPS destined to be the same.

I mean since doom 1 to Killzone 2 we can see such a difference I would like to know what might we see in FPS if we take a time machine and go to the year 2020 if humanity is still alive around that time.

By that time hologram technonolgy should be starting to his commercial success so FPS are going to be vastly superior to anything we play today.

For me its not how it will look but more how they could change evolve. Like I said in the "motion control" threads, maybe for the games to change the controls have to change.

For example an old FPS like DOOM. You had sprites over 3-D environments and you used a 2-D input (pad, arrow keys, WASD) and it was okay. The FPS evolved in the way that you could aim, but instead of doing it the hard way and making the weapon a 3-D object we could move freely, developers opted for a more simple way. They made the weapon a static object that would always be in the center of your point of view, and this way you could still use a 2-D input device to control it. With this technique its how we got the dual analogue and the mouse & keyboard setups. One 2-D input controls the movement and the other the view.

With a 3-D input device the developers of games would be able to make a weapon in a FPS a free object and we will truly for once "aim" in a FPS. That's why I think a 3-D controller would revolutionize not only FPS, but any other 3-D based genre.

Hopefully their will be less of them, the market is flooded with this genre. I love good FPS games, but the industry needs to explore more possiblities.

Agreed, or at least move somewhere else with first person... Mirror's Edge was good, but it just didn't inspire the same kind of excitement as an FPS

In a way I was thinking something similar to this they will still make the graphics better than Crysis and Killzone 2 in 2020 but will add something similar or better than the wiimote that actually makes you feel like your holding a gun and shooting it will replicate the exact feel, maybe in that time they will make a smellavision for games and have you smelling gunpowder or whatever.

I can't really say; but look at the leap from DOOM to Crysis. DOOM came out in 1993 and Crysis came out in 2006. That's an amazing leap for 13 years; one can only imagine what the next 11 years will offer in terms of immersion and graphics.

they will look a little better then crysis. it would look almost real now. if u think about it 2020, will be around the end of the ps4, wii 2 (something liek that) and xbox 720/ 3 (what ever the next name would be) so graphics and things will be great. hopefully nothing happens like 2012 is the end of the world.... i don't believe that but something like that could happen.

This might sound a little out there , but I think there's a good chance Killzone 2 is from 2020 , and somehow it was sent back in todays time for an important reason bigger than us.

I'm betting they are going to look photorealistic. They will continually improve in areas like the size of the levels, or the scale of destructability, or the AI, or weather simulations, etc.

If you get shot then the bullet comes through the screen and you get shot in real life. So that means you can die from playing a video game ( I would still play). Wishful thinking but i hope the graphics are as good as the Conduit, if not then Red Steel graphics will do (still looks good).

this might sound a bit controversial but basically, if you take the wii control idea, ps360 graphics and made it so you needed 3d goggles and your weapon reacted in 3d... imagine how immersive that would be

The gun isn't static in Operation Flashpoint, ArmA and Penumbra. In Penumbra every physical object is controlled with the mouse; it's a bit awkward at first, but it works. You even open the doors by swinging them with the mouse.

In 2020 we will simply become part of a giant FPS. There is a long and complicated theory behind this (No there is isn't.) and you couldn't possibly begin to comprehend it (Because it dosn't exsist.).

The more it gets real... and popular.

The prospect people taking advantage of people becoming desensitised to violence, and their growing acceptance of simulated violence grows. Mind you its already begun.

The games don't train killers. Instead it could very well push an acceptance of killing.

That worries me.

And FPS are one of my favourite genres...

depends what you mean, if your bringing K2 into this i assume you mean graphics then id imagine it would blow our minds away, if your referring to gameplay then i really dont know, i think the only game this console gen to really innovate FPS is call of duty 4.

I think 3D technology is the next big thing for gaming. In the current state you can only do so much to enhance the look and feel of a game. 3D tech with eyewear is the future, Nvidia is already starting to open that door. What Crysis looks like....multiply that by about 3 and make it 3D.

the game will feel so real that you actually feel every bullet, and you'll probably won't survive a bullion bullets to the chest, and you won't recover while hiding behind a wall for 5 seconds. Then you'll realise that you're actually in the war... yup, that's how good killzone 6 will be.
