Critically? Financially? Technically? There are many ways it could all go wrong.. In the event that it does, will it be a huge blunder for the industry? Or is impossible to fail? I ask you SW because you are the rock in my star.

Hermits will be lambasted by morons like suppaman. Normal people will probably be like "that sucks" and get on with their lives.
At this point, I think nothing will happen beyond what would happen to any other AAA game flopping. There will be a media ruckus for a few days and things will go back to normal. Crowdfunding will probably take a hit.
Crofunding will die.
No it wont... people are crowdfunding Original Sin 2 despite not having to... because they want these projects. Maybe projects won't get the same ammount ever again, but it will never die. and I'm glad, we wouldn't have the VR craze going on now if people didn't crowdfun the oculus rift for example.
If Star Citizen flops? it will be gutting, but what can you do? would be a sad day for gaming... because not f*cking console developer is pushing the boundaries anywhere near as much... despite have the finance and resources... the cow morons say "sony is for gamers" but thats a load of s*it ... sony are playing it incredibly safe, as is nintendo, as is microsoft ... churning out he same games over and over... because there are probably 10% gamers in their companies ... and 90% pencil pushing "im in it for the money" pricks that make all the decisions.
And then you get s*it like Star Wars: Battlefront that will sell millions on its name alone ... meanwhile having a terrible ammount of content, with expensive DLC ..... and a massive step backwards for star wars games in general... except graphics... what a suprise.
Sony came out and said "We took a huge risk with Bloodborne" ... that is not only a lie, but a pile of patronising w@nk ... the damn franchise sells millions, it was clearly friggin safe.. if that is their idea of risk, then it screams volumes of why most of their 1st aprty are shallow tech demo shooters now.
Hermits will play the victim and act like ppl who bash the game for flopping are being ridiculous and "games flop...I have more games to play".
Then when the next console exclusive flops.....they'll bash the game for flopping and not remember how they played the victim when SC flopped.
That's a good question. It's a massive risk. The project has exploded in scope and is probably the most ambitious game ever developed. They've got the money for it, but it's all out of the pockets of their fans and gamers. So really it's a gamble for the people, not the devs.
If the game does fail, none of the higher-ups at Cloud Imperium Games will ever find work in the industry again. I know a lot of people will be very upset. Though in the end it'll have little impact on the market. It may kill Kickstarting games and crowdfunding games, but that's about it.
Star Citizen is a giant that stands alone.
That said, I don't see it failing. They've got enough money to buy the talent they need to make the game work. It may not live up to all of the expectations, but at this point that's guarenteed since the scope blew up everybody's expectations. It's pretty much guarenteed to upset some of the backers and be a disappointment to others. It'll just come down to how many they can satisfy.
It is online persistent universe that will continue to get better with regular updates. In worst case scenario it won't be as good as everyone expected but will still be a fun game that will continue to get content/patches. But yes, there will be a lot of metacritic kids giving it 0/10 but who cares. That said, can't wait for Citizen Con (9 days left). Campaign (Squadron 42)'s opening scene will be revealed.
Epic hermit meltdown would ensue, that's what.
Rightfully so, hermits hyping this jack of all trades, master of none game to the heavens.
Can't blame them since they don't have any other significant exclusive.
Oh my God, that worked out pretty well...

If you mean 'flop' as in gets a low score on Gamespot not a single person anywhere will care in the slightest, apart from some dumb trolls in System Wars, who'll see it as some kind of ownage and masturbate to their own forum posts.
If by 'flop' you mean be unplayable garbage, then that's highly unlikely to happen. By the time the full persistent universe comes online, Star Citizen will have been the most tested video game in existence. No game has ever been created as openly as Star Citizen. We get weekly updates and a dedicated in house programme called Around the Verse (I preferred Wingman's Hangar but no point dwelling on the past), monthly reports from every studio involved, weekly question and answer sessions from everyone from Chris Roberts to programmers, writers and artists. Then just to top that off, we get to play it, report bugs and issues.
On top of all of that they're about to pop $90 Million in funding, so they're not going to run out of money anytime soon (unless Chris decides to buy another island for his evil empire of Scamistan)

they can't even finish the game because they ran out of money. And not to mention that there's some real big internal conflict going on because since they ran out of money they are firing people left and right.
At the moment Robert is so butthurt about this article that he accused the writer of being a gamergater:
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/video-games/features/14715-CIG-Employees-Talk-Star-Citizen-and-the-State-of-the-Company
Then we have Derek Smart suing Cloud Imperiun for some reason too... So things aren't going very well.

Wingman Hangar was so cool (Around the verse has come a long way though. First it was so boring to watch... now it's interesting). Eric Peterson was one of the reasons why so many people became interested in the game (and Chris himself of course). Eric Peterson is making his own game Descent: Underground and now his game airs Wingman's Hangar every week featuring good old camera man (forgot his name,,, the guy who used to scream "fufufufuforum feedback in the background) and Rob Irving etc.
Cows like Suppaman, g-puking, m3dude, AM-Gamer will be dancing naked on roads in joy. I don't know who would want to see that.
Apart from that, realistically speaking, the game will disappoint some people now that it has grown so big in its scope.

Derek Smart can't sue s*it... hes a liar.
Also, where is this "they have run out of money" BS coming from? they are growing in numbers.

Read .. (note : alot of this information was available before this writing) ... educate yourself... learn that most gaming websites are click bait piles of wank (this one included.... just I will praise Gamespot.... they don't get too involved in this crap).
Chris Roberts... able to do far better research, far better "both side of the story" write up, than an amatuer s*it journalist who has proven ties with spinning this nonsense to her own clickbait agenda... and busted. "Journalists" that are too stupid to realise that while they stalk others, they can be stalked and called out for BS in the same exact manner.
Escapist lied about not receiving CR's reply, and now they are in full damage control mode.... with no evidence, no proof. On the contrary proven that they are simply just rehashing what Derek Smart says (again with imaginary sources) .... a terrible games journo company, trying to profit of a mad mans dellusional rants... when, if anyone... he is the damn scam artist.
But hey .... what do I know? I actually looked into Derek Smart, looked at both ends of the story, and hey... im not impressed by Star Citizen's progress either, but to say they are out of money and the project is in trouble, is f*cking stupid... sort your s*it out GUE and stop speaking about things you know little about.
EDIT
Isn't it just "magically" that despite CiG showing off an impressive Multicrew Demo at Gamescon, and social module and FPS module ... that NONE of these websites reported about it, barely even linked it...
What was Gamespot putting on the front page at the time? "Top 10 Star Wars: Battlefront Wallpapers" ... it doesn't take a genius to work out that these sites are s*it at their job .... good at making money by pandering to morons mind you.... but real journalism? HAH.

I think it's smart to remain skeptical, but there's a difference between investigation and a witch hunt. Derek Smart has some sort of personal vendetta, and he is REALLY good at poking just enough and then retreating. You'll notice literally every time he has "insider information" he won't actually post anything other than saying he has it. He doesn't want to "endanger people's jobs" or whatever. This latest explosion is about a "leaked" legal document (basically, it was a lawyer letter to Derek Smart with some delicious word pwnage) I have no idea how a marketing director or social director would have gotten their hands on a confidential letter. I doubt they did, again, he's just using people leaving as a grounds to scare people.
Edit: SW, If you want to know who Derek Smart is, for those who don't know, he claims he's making a game that is very similar to star citizen, and in between ramblings of the company stealing everyone's money, he's plugging away for his game saying it's basically on the same level.

All PC has is strategy and simulation games lol (laugh out loud). You don't even need a gaming PC to play the best that PC has to offer.

"often times better than a master of one"
But yeah, there would be a meltdown I imagine. Still, I don't think it'll fail financially, at least.
@funkmaster1233: You actually need one. Rts are very hardware demanding, and most recent mmos too. For example, PS4 won't even run half of the recently released RTS. And MMOS are severely downgraded for consoles and run only at 30 fps lol

and, the only thing it can do now is "meet the targeted hype or not". If it does meet the hype then gamers win. If not then life moves on.

What rts games? Cossacks remaster? AoE2 remaster? AoM remaster? Halo Wars 2 will be released on XBox and balanced for a controller so it wont play well on PC. There hasn't been a good MMO this decade.

Judging by this comment, it's clearly evident that you know nothing about PC gaming.

Wow. Someone stayed in the past and still thinks it's 2000 LOL
Let's see
Rome 2 and Total War Atilla require very beefy PC
Total War:Shogun 2, and even Napoleon and Empire still require a medium gaming PC
Company of Heroes 1/2
Even Civilization 5 - you need a good CPU because in the end game turns may take several minutes to calculate
Star Craft 2 Heart of the Swarm
From recently released
Act of Aggression
Satellite Reign
Grey Goo
Blitzkrieg 3
Etherium
Planetary Anihilation
Wargame: Red Dragon
In the MMOs department
Guild War 2 and Star Wars: Old Republic new expansions
WildStar
But apparently your ancient PC can only run AoE2 XD
Financially it may discourage PC gamers from funding spiritual successors to classic PC titles and devs won't be willing to crowd fund a AAA PC exclusive in fears it may flop like Star Citizen.
