What will happen if Star Citizen flops?

It will gather over 100 mln dollars through crowdfunding when all is said and done. If anyone wants to repeat this will be the number that they will be looking at. I don't see how Star Citizen flopping do anything do discurage developers of crowdfunding AAA exclusives, since the crowdfunding itself was a success in this case. It doesn't make any sense.

Not exactly all will be getting anywhere near 100 million dollars but they should be able to generate at least a few million dollars from crowdfunding from what I observed with other legendary PC games/devs going the crowd funding way, then again none of them have been as ambition as Star Citizen tech wise which some PC gamers are supporting Star Citizen just to get next gen Crysis but it is great either way. I believe only about 1 million people so far have crowd funded Star Citizen so when they finally release SQ42 and more complete versions of SC there can still be millions of people to sell it too plus all the money will be pure profit since it wasn't created with their own money.

But even if they could afford to stay exclusive they would have no incentive to, Chris Roberts stated that they would of most likely ported SC to consoles if the stretch goals being achieved didn't make the game too much for consoles to handle. Sony and Microsoft are getting pretty vicious with picking up third party games most of which are PC games to make as their own "exclusives" with two other Space sim's No Man's Sky was originally going to release a PC exclusive and Microsoft gave money just to make Elite: Dangerous a timed exclusive on consoles I'm pretty sure they've already tried to contact Chris Roberts trying to make some deal about putting Star Citizen exclusively on their console or some other third party deal. It just that some PC gamers may be discouraged from funding a "PC Game" knowing that M$/Sony can swoop in offering some third party deal like with Shenmue 3 only after the game gets funded and ride off with it and end up consolizing it.

However I hope Star Citizen and other games finally motivate more classic PC developers to get back together and create ambitious successors to their games. Battletech got $1.2 million in Kickstarter with 32 days left to fund it. I imagine the success of Battletech will have them create a AAA simulation combat Mechwarrior game with a single player campaign, advanced physics/destruction and possibly implement a damage system similar to the one Star Citizen is making (that would be really awesome to see the insides of a mech as your lasers burn through them). MekTek's Heavy Gear Assault could of filled up some missing place in the Mech Simulator genre for PC if they didn't screw up the kickstarter campaign originally planning to make it an F2P Esports title. Everyone wanted a B2P Single Player campaign and traditional multiplayer but by the time they updated that they would include singleplayer the articles of its campaign already gave it some bad light.

1. Like when Ryse, Knack, MCC,The Order, Killzone, Destiny, Drive Club, etc. flopped? It's not like XBO/PS4 have tiny aaa/aaE libraries or anything and hyped those games to oblivion. lols.

2. PC has more aaa+aa exclusives than any console combined this gen. It has more upcomming than any other system and then some. Get stomped.

Well..I generally think that if it was multiplat it indeed wouldn't get this much crowdfunding. And it won't happen anyway, as SC is pretty much the only game that could pull it off. Every other niche on PC can be served by indie devs or by PC-focused publishers. SC is an anomaly and I don't see any other game on PC getting 20+ mln through crowdfunding, let alone aproeaching 100 mln

That said, at this point I think porting it to consoles is impossible. The game too ambitous and would require heavy workout to work. It's also very PC-ish in nature. Bassicaly to make it work you would need to create separate console version, with scaled back graphics and gameplay, as well as running on separate servers, which would be then nightmare to support when you're still fighting to secure position in PC market.

Maybe in few years, once the game matures on PC I can see them doing a console spin-off, the way World of Tanks got one. Supporting consoles is generally a nightmare for ever evolving online-focused projects and the only incentive to do so is if you're starting to fail on original PC market and are looking for a boost.

People who spent hundreds (thousands?) of dollars on an in-game ship will feel ripped off.

LMFAO. Wildstar and Guild Wars 2 proved my point in the MMO department. The latest Total War sucks, Starcraft 2 is terrible compared to Starcraft 1, you don't need a "beefy" CPU for Civ 5 as my Dad plays it on his Packard Bell from 2010 and it runs good late game on low settings. Company of Heroes 1 is a great game but it's also around 10 years old. It seems like the alpha test scams and CRPGS that can't hold a candle to games like Planescape Torment are finally getting to you as the other games you listed are only there to increase your list size.

I suspect the world will keep spinning.

I don't like how RSI seems to have no limits on their design concept. As long as the money keeps rolling in, they keep adding shit. I really don't feel this to be a wise way to create something. Boundaries should be set and kept heeded to.

This is the main thing that concerns me.

It will just go to show (again) that project management in video game development is the one part that needs extra attention. Indie developers aren't really that equipped to manage complex projects.

All life will lose faith in crowd funding. Especially a over bloated game like this.

@-God-: the only problem is you are basing flop on the SW meta version of the term flop. Financially all of those games sold a ton of units. MCC sold 5 mil and even broken DriveClub sold 2 mil.

If SC flops it won't still sell. It's already a high tier game that a good chunk of PC gamers won't really be able to play because their rigs aren't good enough.

I personally hope it becomes the next WoW, I'm just saying the TC has a point.

I can tell that you two are wannabe herms based entirely on your opinions of Guild Wars 2 and Starcraft 2. TESO and Planetside 2 would be better off if they couldn't be run on anything because those two games died a long time ago just like proper PC exclusives.

1) there is no space sim on its level, with the same graphics, fidelity, fast paced ... and VERY soon scale... and multicrew features.

2) The FPS module, while im sure it won't win CoD Bro, and Esport awards ... will be at the same quality level of any AAA shooter with enough refinement.

3) No Sci Fi SP/Coop Campaign games of its kind are even competing.. or exist.

The only thing that could really get in the way of the game development at this point is some sort of scandal that gives a large portion of the people who have funded the game the desire to take back all they've given.

And it can't flop financially, it's been paid for already.

Critically, it's likely to be a massive success amongst most non-commercially propped up critics.

The console Bayonetta 2 is on is part of its problem.

The big upcomming PC exclusives are Totalwarhammer, Unreal, Star Citizen, Dread Naught, XCOM2, OverWatch, Lost Ark, Fort Night, BlueStreak, BattleCry, Anno 2205, Vermintide, Heroes of the Storm, GW2: Heart of Thorns, WoW: Legion, SC2: Legacy of the Void, Divinity 2, and Torment .

The first three of which probably can't even run on PowerPoint 4, and some of the others would probably struggle as well in high density situations. So much for "8 bit".

Surely beats the epic list of "UC4 and Persona5", or "Quantum Break and Halo5". Now go back to fighting for distant 2nd place when you aren't on here lying, M3dude.
