what will nintendo do when the casuals put their Wiis away?

people cant honestly assume that all the casuals will continue to play the wii a year from now. the wii is indeed a gimmick system imho ( a gamecube with a different interface) designed to sell based on curiosity. which in the short term looks great for nintendo, but may very well hurt it in the long run. sales may look impressive because of all the media attention the wii gets becasue grandma thinks its neat...but there in lies the dilemma

a year from now, this day, when a mom or a grad student, or a half ass casual gamer......all who bought the wii out of curiosity or on a whim.....what will happen when they are no longer buying games? when their wii is just collecting dust on a shelf?

since the wii isnt geared toward hardcore/enthusiast gamers...who typically buy from 2 to 5 games a month...is it possible that nintendo may be going after a market that may not care about them two years later ?

i know all the Wiithusiasts out there have declared victory since grandma is playing wii bowling for 3 minutes a week......but whats the reality about the wiis future?

Oh, well, good thing the Wii is neither a toy, nor did it stop selling after the holidays.

Well, those casuals will go out and by Wii Health Pack, Brain Age, Wario Ware, and maybe something like Wii Music.

And then they will enjoy those games and go out and buy more casual oriented games that Nintendo will release down the line.

I guess all games for the Wii forever and ever have been cancelled now? I mean, I'm sure 5 months after the DS release you didn't see brain age or NSMB or Nintendogs comming.

They will continue to release games like Wii Orchestra and Wii Health to entice them to play with their Wiis more. Just because you don't have the creative flair that Nintendo does doesn't mean that they don't have the ability to keep casuals interested. So if your lack of foresight can't even help you in comprehending, you should definitely not stake a claim in the fortune telling business.

Since they're casuals, I imagine RE:UC and Boogie will keep them playing for the rest of the year and beyond.  'Cause, you know, those're the types of games that only casuals play.

why is button mashing not a gimmick but motion control is? explain yourself. Chau_

well button mashing a form of gameplay style...not interface.

when i say gimmick, im referring to the fact that many wii games that use the wiimote ...it seems and feels tacked on and doesnt really add to the value of the game. paper mario for instance......the game could have gotten rid of the wiimote function and been absolutely as playable without it.

yah well minesweeper doesnt have the sellthrough of halo2 or gta san andreas or geow.

thats my point.....if nintendo wii becomes the minesweeper system of gaming.....isnt my point valid? how can a system win if its audience buys one game very 4 months.......and the systems audience buy a game 3-4 time a month alone?

please someone explain to me how being system with lower software slaes is a good thing.

Perhaps but the Wiimote method was more enjoyable, it was very natural to point at the scenne like a flashlight

... Minesweeper has been played by more people then Halo 2 or GTA San Andreas, and you could argued sold, as a feature of windows.

and one gaming site last month publised the attach rates... the Wii is second only to the Xbox 360 and had the same attach rate as the PS2 did for it's first year.

bottomline- even if the controls do not add or are not necessary they just seem so fun and interesting. i have madden on it and my last madden was a 3 dollar 04 one. and this one was fun cause i didn't know how to the motion sensing worked to make me tackle harder so i just pound at it like crazy. i have just deluded myself into thinking it actaully helps cause i actually got soomewhere, and now its lots of fun. and people like alternatives to just the button mashing way to play.

The Wii has sold like 1/3 as much as the GC did in 5 months, and you're saying it's gonna hurt sales in the longrun?

well evidently nintendo owners have neither the ability to reason or hear an askew viewpoint......

it seems everyone here would rather debate with awkward logic and useless platitudes. yes we know the ds is popular but the ds has absolutely nothing to do with the console market....but you guys keep bringing it up.

and you cant keep using sales figures because if you have 45 million consoles sold in one year......and only get one game every 4 months for it....then install base goes out the window.

the honest truth is the wii is going down the same path as the N64 and the gamecube......sad but true

dude...just stop. as far as i kno (and i dont have a crystal ball unfortunately), there is alot of wii traffic on every game site, including gamespot.  now, if "some" of casual gamers do put their wii's away, which some will no doubt, but some probably wont. those millions that own the wii who are not casuals, i.e. those on gamespot, will probably continue playing it. hmmm weird.

This topic is ludicrous. What makes you think the casuals will ditch the Wii for a PS3 or 360. They sure didn't change their mind when they had a PS2 even though Xbox and Gamecube were more powerful.

Christ, the Wii uses the same formula (As described by the threadstarter as an argument for failure) as the NDS, and look how well that's doing. As long as Nintendo keep up with the following quality of advertising, the Wii will win the console race.

  • Hotel Dusk UK (Targeting 25+ female demographic)
  • Phoenix Write UK (Targeting 25+ female demographic)
  • Warioware: Smooth Moves UK (Targeting 18-21 female demographic)

Sony on the other-hand, are cannibalizing their advertising.

  • Sony PSP advert (Targeting immature men, the same target group who would buy a PSP anyway!)

Your analysis is flawed.  It's not just casuals that are buying Wii systems.  Further, Nintendo is selling plenty of games as well.  The Wii is here to stay.  I know you don't take it seriously, but you are in the minority.  I remember the original NES had a similar run with casuals.  I knew tons of people who could have been considered casuals that bought the thing to play Duck Hunt.  That lame game got people on board and once that happened, they bought better games.

The only thing sad here is you, and that's the only truth in this idiotic crystal-ball-seeing thread.

well first off.....the personal attacks arent warranted. calling me sad and idiotic doesnt add to the depth of the discussion.

secondly, let me explain my logic and my concerns.

i know alot of people that are of the non gamer persuasion that bought a Wii. now when i say non gamers...i mean they have either not played games in a decade, or they have never ever played games period. i know for a fact that after they have played wii sports for a week they have not touched their system since. its to be expected.....they are not big time gamers

so far the wii has had a few strong first party showings (zelda, paper mario) but wii owners have had to settle for alot of ports of ps2 gamecube and xbox titles so far. these are not the titles they were promised when they bought the system...they want more wii sports, wii controlled party games.....my aunt has no use for godafther black hand, or call of duty or scarface.....

also.....because alot of wii owners are comprised of moms, grandmas and non gamers who bought the system to play wii sports. does this hurt the wii later on when those people may bore of the wii and move onto other hobbies.

we could always assume that once they play the wii they are hooked for life, or we could also assume that they played the wii had their momentary fun and will move onto other things.

i personally feel that one of the problems of selling a system to non gamer audiences is that you are marketing to a crowd who doesnt buy games in the volume that hardcore/enthusiast gamers do. im not saying that wii is for non gamers only....but you have to be fair....alot of people have given kudos to nintendo for going after non gamers with the Wii as a strategy......and i believe its a strategy that may bite them later on.

if you look at nintendo history, my concerns are not without merit. the last two systems(n64,GC) have floundered when it came to third party support and turned into an arrid wasteland of first party titles every six months.

im just wondering if were seeing another example of nintendo going great out the gate, but losing steam in year two or three.

It's unfortunate, but they just keep busting out the same rehash zelda, wario ware, mario + whatever sports.

My friends, N fanboys, say Wii is the best, but spends about an hour on a game before they stop playing it.  One of my biggest N fanboy friends hasn't even finished Zelda yet and he got it since the launch.

Nintendo is going to do 4 things:

1) Release Sonic vs. Mario Olympics aka Wii Sports 2 during the holiday season.

2) Continue to make money off of the VC. Those same 'casuals' who fall under the 'haven't gamed in 10 years' category love replaying the games from their childhood, even if no new Wii games come out at all the VC will still make money.

3) Roll around in their giant pile of cash for a while.

4) Release Wii 2, this time with beefed up graphics. Since they will be the market leader, that type of investment will be much less of risk this time around. People have shown they are willing to buy Nintendo again. Also, theres no need to support the Wii for 10 years the way Sony has too for the PS3 to avoid going bankrupt, and they have a huge R&D budget from the Wii's success.

Trust me, Nintendo isn't scared in the slightest.
