Whatever happened to the Steam Machines?

What happened? weren't these things supposed to "End" Consoles, bring PCs to the living room and bring more people back to the PC market that's being completely taken over by tablets, Macs and Netbooks.

This was just like a year ago and now nothing,,,,,,,,,, They were all on the front pages and mysteriously disappeared.

It got the miserable death it deserved.

No they were never supposed to do that, a few fanboys might have said that, but Gabe was quite clear that is not the goal of SteamOS.

Steam Machines? I'm not to bothered by them. However SteamOS is available, and the Linux on Steam library is growing quite rapidly.

All in all, considering it's goal, SteamOS is on it's intended path for success.

they were only officially announced in Sept 2013, and the beta only started in Dec 2014

Killing consoles was never their goal . Steam Machines are designed to protect open platforms from closed platforms such as tablets by making PC gaming accessible to more people . Steam Machines are part of long term goal and still being developed . We'll see actual stuff in 2015 and it'll be years until we see final results of it . Valve is taking baby steps , just like Steam .

A "Steambox" was nothing more than just a pre-built PC.

besides, ubuntu with the steam client is probably a more sensible choice.

because it's not a console and is still being labeled as a pc. im sure people can crack it open and upgrade the cpu and ram etc. steambox should have been built exclusively by Steam and not put together by other companies who want in on it for $. it beats the purpose of it being unique as other consoles in the market. their controller sucks and it makes me wonder how are they going to make it work with FPS games without the aimbot. PC gamers are used to the mouse/keyboard + no aim assist. Without aimbot while using a gamepad it would be as difficult as playing killzone. I think steam should focus heavily on their gamepad making it worth replacing keyboard/mouse. I think that will make it stand out from the rest. They have the talent to do this and the mods community should get involve. i would buy a steambox if they can achieve this.

Yeah and the Goal of the PS4 was never to beat out the Xbox One and the Goal of the Xbox One was never to beat out the PS 4. When a company states something isn't their Goal odds are it's their Goal.

Well the way 99% of hermits go about it PC gaming is accessible to everyone and anyone so why would the all knowing Valve try and accomplish what hermits say is already accomplished?

Regardless it's a lost cause and it will never do what it set out to do because there's something better that already does that for cheaper.

pc includes the cost of windows, steamos cost is free. therefore, prebuilt windows vs prebuilt steamos of identical specs - steam machine will be cheaper.

People realized they can build one for cheaper than either the retail ones or the "next-gen" consoles.
