Hello my friends, it's another lame thread with another lame gimmick.

This time, the question is, what has been the best 2D game of year?

-

For me it would probably be Gato Roboto, I had a jolly good with nary a bad thing to say, it's nice to play a game that didn't overstay it's welcome either. Short and sweet.

Donkey Kong Country 4,

I mean uhm Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair, which is Donkey Kong Country 4.

Edit: the game is free on the epic game store by the way.

Seems like some folks are confusing 2D gameplay to 2D game.

That was not what I was expecting the next freebie to be, but I'm happily surprised.

The only 2D game that I played from this year was Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon so I guess it wins by default. It was quite a good game though. I haven’t played the 16-bit mode in Dragon Quest XI S Definitive Edition yet but chances are high that it would be my 2D GotY.

Same here. I was expecting the original Yooka Laylee, honestly. Because it's a lot older.

Epic's free games have been ace so far: I got The Talos Principle and so many others!

They haven't convinced me to spend money yet, but I'll happily take another launcher if it means over $1,000 in free games in the last year. What shocks me the most is the sheer quantity they are giving away on a weekly basis.

Other store fronts would be a $4.99-9.99 game once a month, but these are $19.99-39.99 games WEEKLY. And I think I've missed only one or two of them so far. My library is over 50 titles already.

I don't think I played any 'truly' 2d games.

my favorites 2D-ish games would be Trine 4 and Trials Rising

@uninspiredcup: Yeah Gato Roboto was a great game.

But I'd have to give it to Katana Zero. In my top 3 fav games of 2019.

I love Retro and all but no, Playtonic are the same guys that made DKC1,2,3

Donkey Kong Country returns is really great, but it is made by a different developer.

I'm not jumping to spend any money on Epic either. But I had to get The Walking Dead collection, the price for that was just irresistible when they did an extra 10$ off with the coupon.

Retro made Metroid Prime and the two latest donkey kong countries. I loved those games but still, Playtonic has a lot of that Rare DNA flowing through, because they are the same people that worked at Rare and made games like Donkey Kong Country (for SNES) and Banjo Kazooie (for N64)

If I didn't already have A Hat in Time on the go, I would jump right in for sure.

Absolutely amazing. Mechanically an extremely good game, very polished technically, a level of self-aware humour and clever references that have had me laughing out loud several times (and that is hard to achieve these days for me), and a super cute artstyle that completes the package very nicely.

It takes the expected level design (i.e. jungle, desert, ice-world, lava-world etc) and flips it on it's head and spins. It starts out pretty plain-jane, but as soon as you open the second world, it goes nuts. The third world is just bonkers for atmosphere.

I think I'm about 10 hours in and probably only 30% complete (only 4 of 7 (with the DLC) worlds open)? I still don't have all the hat powers either and apparently there's speed running built into every aspect of the game from level design to how everything is laid out in progression, so I'm looking forward to digging into that, especially since the controls are so tight, every mistake is my own.

And the powers lend themselves to new things in old levels too, unlocking areas you have a hard time getting to or are impossible to reach without them and giving you more collectibles to grab.

I love it, one of the best games I've played in a while.

@Pedro: Yeah wanted to know what the distinction was here. Because Samurai Shodown is a 2d fighter, but It’s a 3D game in terms of tech. No sprites or any of that.

Tho it would be appreciated if the distinction was centered around the gameplay, for once.

From what I have played that released this year, probably just Blazing Chrome off top of my head.

Releases from previous years that I played in 2019, Dex and Dandara I enjoyed the most.

I was hoping someone here would say Blasphemous because I might play it soon, looking for some encouragement.
