[QUOTE="Dencore"][QUOTE="Vandalvideo"]It depends really. Those who say that WRPGs are more varied in storyline have either never played a good deal of JRPGs or have a thumb up their ***. Games like Persona, Suikoden, and Wild Arms bend the rules of story telling and provide great story lines.Science fiction, political satire, occult, etc? JRPGs have it all. What do find more than naught is that WRPGs have more actiony rpg games. A lot of the times you find that the table top rules have been filed (For lack of a better word) to appease the masses. Never-the-less, WRPGs have engaging stories as well. Neither is really a clear cut winner. My favorite RPG of all time, however, is a JRPG.majadamus
And what would that be?
I agree though people say that alot.
Hell I acutally just got down with an argument at the General Game Discussions board for someone who claimed that every JRPG hasn't changed in the past 20 years and 90% of them have the same gameplay and the same storyline :|
Yes that's true even though half the JRPG's that come out now are action JRPG's.
Anyway I agree there is no clear cut winner, they're both totally different types of genres.
No, that's not true. I can go way back to the Playstation days and tell you the difference in gameplay. Final Fantasy VII used the materia system which I thought was great, and Final Fantasy VIII used the draw and GF system which I thought was crap, but still they have made changes. Even it there is a minor change, that still is a change. A lot of JRPGs have differences in gameplay. A Grandia game does not play like Dragon Quest.
Tell that to the guys at the General Game Discussions boards that claim that JRPG's are the least innovative genre of all-time, and that Japanese gamers don't like innovation *yes you read that right* and like gaming to stay the same.Â
