Well, this is just me (major keyword, don't take this as me ragging on the game as it's based on a playthrough I watched of it), but it's really how they went about it in seeing what Jason experiences. Like in the BAD ending (and how he achieves that), and certain boss fights.
So even taking what you said into consideration, it's just something I avoid for my own mental health.
I think I'm one of the few people in the world that enjoys Far Cry 3 for it's story (in addition to the gameplay). I honestly thought, given the progression of Brody towards becoming a monster, the only true ending for the game was the "bad" one. There is no redemption for him. The arbitrary "choice" at the end just defeats the entire buildup of the "insanity" theme.
In my first playthrough of the game, I found myself becoming more ruthless and accustomed to the violence as time went on. I was becoming a monster along with Brody, and I thought that was brilliant on behalf of the developers. Very similar feeling to the ending of Spec Ops: The Line.
Problem I have, none of them are likable in the first place, and it basically stays that way. You have ignorant, bratty, rich Americans coming to a place they are totally ignorant of, thinking the world is a big play-toy (similar to The Beach), and then they get their just deserts.,
In something like District 9 the protagonist is a dick, cowardly and seems as dumb as a rock, but you get a gradual, believable transition as he goes from just trying to get out of the situation to sacrificing himself. When he halts in the mech while being taunted, he reflects and becomes a better person in the space of about 3 seconds. The audience gets it, it's earned. He changes his perspective of the world and is now truly the hero of the story.
In Far Cry 3. within the first 5 minutes, some black guy who's probably lived there forever, declares you his white magical god to go about saving them and within a few days you master the island and become Jesus in tune with the simplstic, beast like ways of the natives. It's probably not the best sign in the world when you're rooting for Vaas.
