I'll list only the first five amazing missions that came to my mind, because I've played too many in the past 20 years and I really don't want to make a huge list. (andno RPG/RTS this time)

  • Half-Life - "Surface Tension"
  • Mafia - "A Trip To The Country"
  • Thief II: The Metal Age - "Life of the Party"
  • Max Payne - "Put Out My Flames With Gasoline"
  • Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth - "Attack of the Fishmen"

What do you think is the best mission ever in any videogame to date?

Thanks.

Taking down The Boss in MGS 3. So much emotion and drama for me in that showdown battle.

Only one answer to that question:

Three Leaf Clover. One of the best missions of all time and certainly the greatest mission in a GTA game ever. It's everything that's great about GTA rolled into a single epic gloriously cinematic mission.

My favorite mission ever has to be The Silent Cartographer from Halo: Combat Evolved. Sure, there are more intense missions in shooters now with all the new-fangled crap that people do with scripted events, but when I was in that Pelican and FoeHammer was tossing out orders and the music kicked in heavy and the UNSC Marines and I hit the beach with guns blazing against a giant Covenant force. Well, that was probably the one major event that kept me into gaming for all of this time.

However, I want to say that runner-up, if not tied with this is, A Chilled Night from Otogi: Myth of Demons. It is in my mind the single greatest one on one showdown in any videogame. Absolutely stylish, challenging and brutal. There's a certain poise and elegance to Otogi and that mission holds everything I love about the game in high regards.

As far as newer games this gen (I'm going to avoid older games), I want to say that Act V of the first Gears of War where you're on that train and fighting forward has to be one of the coolest missions ever. I think this might be the pinnacle of this current generation, even as far as endgames though. Sure beats riding a Brumak. Who the hell OK'ed the ideas for that sequel.

The Covenant mission from Halo 3 is also really awesome. It takes everything awesome about Halo, amplifies it and then raises it all to a maximum.

Vermire until the final showdown in Mass Effect was probably one of the best endgames I've ever played. Very awesome final showdown and endgame.

Gerudo Desert in Twilight Princess is also the coolest portion of that game. The boss fight in that dungeon is absolutely insane! The Yeti house is really unique too. Great level design in Twilight Princess overall, it's packed with more content than The Wind Waker that's for sure, even if I think WW is more charming.

So (before I play GOW3 tomorrow), its...

The metal gear super machines mission and the last couple of missions in MGS4

The Desperate Times mission in Uncharted 2

And the final levels in both KH1 and KH2 (you need plenty of stamina to finish the missions in both of those lol).

And NOW since I have played GOW3, I would have to add the Poisieden and Zeus fight to my list.

In GTA3 there was a mission in the first island where you go with two mafia gang members and have a gang war with this other gang.

Mass Effect: Noveria and Virmire

Mass Effect 2: most of the missions were equally awesome, but the suicide mission was really epic.

I thought there were way better battles in ME2 than the final levels. The last fight felt gimicky and not particularly realistic to me, still enjoyed it though.

Three leaf clover (GTA IV) was a blast from beginning 'till the end.

MoH:AA - D-Day mission was epic, even though there were like 10 people on the beach it just felt immersive.
They pretty much redid that mission in the first CoD when you enter Stalingrad, just because it was so epic.

One was a chapter (I think 7) in Fatal Frame II where a ghost will follow you and can 1 HKO you. :o My other favorite mission is Siberia in TS2.

MW2 has its flaws but i really think a few of the campaign missions are just spectactular. I loved Cliffhanger (I think its called), where you Icepick up and go through the blizzard with the heartbeat sensor and escape on the snowmobile. High speed chase, great stealth scenes, and i love hat scene with Soap is surrounded by like 30 ppl and you "Go to plan b". The mission in Aghanistan when your infiltrating the base is also quite fun, as well as the one in Russia where you stealthily sneak in to get to the submarine (dont remember either names). The story left a bit to be desired, but those missions really felt like epic scenes from a movie.

Modern Warfare's "All Ghillied Up" The final stages of Portal (if you count them as a "level") Train Sequence in Uncharted 2 Those are off the top of my head. Some of the Bioshock levels were really interesting, Fort Frolic in particular.masterpinky2000

Well going off this,

I'd add the tanker mission on mgs2, chapter 10 on deadspace, a couple missions on mirrors edge, and the tediz base from conkers bad fur day(n64)

goldeneye007 -bunker level 2 , , and control 00 agent ,

these 2 were not easy these two tested your wits ,

also egyptian that even on agent is a pain ,

so these are the best missions to play ,

then you have timesplitters i like that opening level , it was so awsome ,
