Often times in video games there are sequels that blow there predecessors out of the water, and some of the time they're predecessors were garbage. So which of these kind of games were the best at truely being a step up, and beyond there predecessors awfulness.

Killzone 2: Don't we all wish we could forget killzone 1, and its broken design? As for killzone 2, it was awesome, and its design was vastly greater than the first.

Red Steal 2: This is more of a replacement than a sequel to a horrible wii game with an awesome premise. Great swordplay, and overall great design redeem a game that's better off forgotten.

Age of Empires 2: Age of empires 1 was a largly weak game that didn't have that much depth to it. As for AOE2, it became one of the best rts games ever made. Too bad AOE3 was just as bad as the first.

Street Fighter 2: Does anyone even remember the first Street Fighter game? No? Yea, theres a reason for that.

Spider man 2: This was one of those rare games based on a movie that was great while its predecessor was nothing more than the stereotypical bad movie based video game that it was. It could also be the foundation of the superpowered sandbox genre that spawned infamous, prototype, and that one hulk game I forgot the name of.

I played the first streetfighter loads and it wasn't that good back in the day, so sf2 gets my vote for the amount of innovation and improvement from the original.

Oh, I clicked on this thread to SAY :

STREETFIGHTER 2...but you already had that in the OP.

I will answer, ALAN WAKE 2, lol. Just kdding, SF2 was my biggest answer.:P

KZ2 and Spiderman 2 were two other games I agree with to a point.

Spiderman 1 and KZ1 weren't horrible, they were just average. Check Metacritic. KZ2 and Spidey 2 though were stellar and absolutely amazing.

I doubt many in SW played Spidey 2 in it's time, as it was quite impressive, and when I have brought it up over the years in conversations about Crackdown, Prototype, Infamous, no one seems to remember it.:(

My favourite game there is AoEII, but I also loved AoE so I'll say Killzone 2. :)

KZ1 was far from horrible...:?. It has a 7+ metacritic, which means its labeled as a good game with its share of flaws

Street Fighter 2.

Just because I've never played the first, and looking at screens and gameplay it looks terrible in comparison.

The fact that Street Fighter 2 defined a genre and generation is enough, whilst street fighter 1 has had little credit nor mention.

Assassin's Creed 2 for mehiryu3

I wouldn't call the first game "horrible."

The core mechanics were good. It was just dreadfully repetitive.

Ubisoft could've have cut *hours* worth of that stupid filler content out of the game and it would've been better for it..

But yea I voted for Spiderman, loved that game.

I didn't think Killzone 1 was horrible at all. It definitely wasn't perfect, nor the 'Halo killer' it was cracked up to be, but you could see from the start that this series had the potential to grow out to something big.

It's a shame that the first KZ was a terrible game. It couldn't kill Halo. And the 2nd one wouldn't be able to either because Halo has spawned too many sequels and it's the largest console FPS besides COD already. I think Halo = Gran Turismo for consoles. And KZ = Forza. Even if it's better, it'll never beat. BTW, it's just like how LBP will never beat Mario no matter how good and innovative it is. :(

Make a bad game that sells amazing. Then make a good game that sells crap

Also Zone of the enders 2

Photobucket

ZOE1 is by no means crap, its just that its borderline impossible to play it after experiencing ZOE2. It makes it horrible

Excuse me? Age of Empires 1 is awesome.

And probably Red Steel, or Killzone for improvements on bad games. Assassin's Creed 2 was a massive improvement too, but the first one wasn't horrible, just flawed.

Anyone who played Spidey 2 when it first came out KNOWS it was teh ****. I loved that game more than most superhero sandbox games of nowadays, heck I enjoyed it wayyyy more than InFamous.

It's biggest 2 flaws were it's lenght and variety (not having enough of). Either way great game.

Now to TC's answer, I have to say SF2.. Have you even seen how SF1 plays?...:|

In SP1, and KZ1's case its came down to if you could forgive some of the design issues that determined if it was good or not. Though I am bugged that people forgot about SP2, it was the godfather of those super powered sandbox games.

I didn't know SF1 sucked, but if it did I guess it's hard to argue against SF2. That game is iconic as far as gaming goes, and a cIassic. Something the other games on the list can't live upto(althugh I never played Age of Empires 2) That said had I not known SF1 was apparently bad(why was it bad?) I would have picked Killzone 2. The first game is pure dog crap. The second game is fun as hell in terms of multiplayer, and while the campaign is bad I do like the gunplay enough to be somewhat entertained by it.

Not so much terrible, but more like I hated the first game: Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 3 (I missed out on UN2). The fighting (in my opinion) is a lot more fun than the first game. And it has sort of a fun third-person action mode, sort of similar to MK: Deception's Konquest mode (only a bit better).

Too bad UN4 had to be disappointing compared to UN3.

I'm saying its a great game though. Just the prequel was a broken game. Just take a look at Age of empires 1's review on this site. It basically sums up my opinion on it.

Ohhhhhh I remember it. How awesome was it to finally get to swing all over the city as Spidey? It was the first open-world game besides GTA that people cared about. The missions were meh and the side stuff was HORRIBLE, the citizens that gave you missions were glitchy and repetitive, but just swinging around was totally awesome.

The look of the levels is awesome. Won't argue that. The graphics engine Guerilla has lends itself and adds to the atmopshere of helghan. The level design itself from a gameplay aspect is awful though. So many cheap choke points with respawning enemies, just bland set piece after set piece, and uninspired shoot outs after another. It's too cookie cutter with the level design, and worst of all this amazing AI it has doesn't really show up. The AI is better than the crap you find in most shooters, but with how restricted and confined the levels are they really don't do much more than any other shooters AI. They flank, and they'll flush you out. Big whoop. What they should do with the sequel(hopefully, because what they showed at E3 was disappointing) is open the levels up a bit. Throw in a bigger field of play and let that AI run wild. If the AI has some breathing room it could make for some truly interesting shoot outs. Plus I might begin to tolerate those set pieces a bit more as change of pace.

You should check out the Capcom Collections on the PS2 to check out SF1, Champ and you will see how horrible it is compared to SF2. I actually tried it and it was bad. That is why it is almost forgotten about and is never mentioned.

Biggest Improvement: Street Fighter II
Street Fighter had two characters that were completely identical. Street Fighter II had one of the most iconic casts of any videogame ever made, and became the icon that everybody associated with fighting games. Everybody knows Street Fighter, and it's not because of Street Fighter, it's because of Street Fighter II.

Best Sequel to the Worst Game: 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand. The first game was god awful. The second game is actually pretty decent mechanically, and is really fun in a comical way. I love how the melee combat exists for no reason other than to get in more close-ups of 50 Cent.

No don't entirely agree with some of what your saying, but I do understand. The AI could have gotten more love, As for the set pieces, and pacing. I loved them, but those 2 aspects are entirely dependent on the person to enjoy it or not. Though there are 2 levels I can think of that show off some of what you wanted from the game those being visari square, and those last few levels after the nuke scene(ripped directly from COD4) that took full advantage of the AI, and rarely had any choke points.
