What's the big deal about Sony abandoning cell?

I see lemmings saying "AAHHHH STICKY THIS!!" "OMG ITS OVER!!" "TEH CELL!!" "THE DOWNFALL" "MOM!!"... amongst other silly things.

Somebody with some intelliegence, can you tell me how this affects PS3 and future development of PS3 titles?

Because "teh Cell" was touted as the "end all be all" for Sony's competition. It was supposed to destroy everything and be the advantage that the PS3 had over the 360. And, now, they are abandoning it - so, it's fairly obvious that we won't see "teh Cell" (the most "advanced processor in consoles") in the PS4.Erkidu

The only real negative is that Sony still puts CELL in their PS3's - they should go with a standard AMD or Intel quad-Core CPU so developers won't have to waste money trying to figure out how to make games run on it.

Well, it is a big deal since this was Sony's pride and joy. But i dont understand why the lemmings are making stupid predictions from this story like ps3 dead in 6 months, ps4 cant have cell, blu-ray will be going soon too and ps3 development will be affected. They're just outsourcing their processor technology so they don't have to waste money on R&D. Its not like toshiba is going to say "NO! You can't have the CELL!" to sony. And blu-ray is doing well actually so i dont know how predictions for its demisec ame about.exiledsnake

now thats going a bit too far. if ps3s are discontinued, i dont even think the cows will like sony after that. They might even bomb sony HQ if that happened.

And your comparison is kinda off too. Cell is not being discontinued, its just being outsourced. Its a huge blow to sony but not that much for a ps3 gamer.

All this means is Sony is handing the production plant over so they don't have to spend the money on advances in cell's technology. By doing this, its one less thing Sony has to worry about. Sony now is just going to be buying their cell chips from Toshiba while they along with IBM takes on the responsibility of making them.

The PS3 has the Cell now and will have it for the rest of the console's life. Seriously lemmings need to take some economics courses and then they may finally realize that this will be saving Sony money in the long run.

So what you're saying is the Cell is indeed a flop? If it wasn't why would Sony give up manufacturing rights? I mean if the Cell didn't flop and it was going to make Sony millions, why would they back out of it?
