After it spent a few months patiently waiting in my Steam library, I played Mirror's Edge for the first time yesterday, and was absolutely blown away by it. The concept is so simple and there's nothing more satisfying that flawlessly covering a large distance without a hiccup.

What do people on SW think of it? It hardly ever seems to get any mention around here. I think it's without a doubt, one of the most underrated games ever.

It's a mediocre game that shows potential. If they fix the interior level design to match the rooftop free running, in a sequal, then it'd be a good game.

It's definitely fun and visually breathtaking. Worth a play through but not very much replay value IMO. The combat that occurs later is a little janky. But overall I really enjoyed it, wish it would get a sequel.

My opinion is a fantasic underrated game that is very short, hope they make a longer campaign if they do Mirror's Edge 2. Still one of my favorites though.

It was a little underrated.

The core gameplay and the visuals are both very very cool, and it feels amazing at its best, but people seem to forget how everything beyond the pure platforming was kind of crap.

it looks pretty, i'll give it that. but clunky controls and lack of "flow" in many segments damaged a lot of the game's potential. flow is particularly important on a speedrunning parkour game. and then you have the combat, which completely killed the game for me. if it wasn't for the combat, maybe i wouldn't have given up on the game near the end. and of course, people should know better than to ask a person to platform in first person. it works in real life because of body and spatial awareness, and because you can move your head without turning the rest of the body with it. those things don't exist in a videogame, which makes first person platforming tougher than it should be, and leads to many moments where a jump doesn't work the first 3 times, but the 4th time it magically works (wall running into ropes to slide down >.> )

The entire reason for that game's existence was to try and make platforming work in first person. It was an experiment, which I thought mostly worked, but the solution was never to put it in third person. You would totally lose the immersion factor and it would just become Prince of Persia (complete with bad combat).

It's understandable that people dislike the gunplay, but it's such a minor part of the game that it doesn't bother me one bit. It's usually just pick up a gun, shoot somebody, put it down, and keep running.

Flawed game. Love the artstyle, the gameplay is somewhat nice at the start. But then it loses it.

Still worth a try if you can buy it on the cheap.

One of my favourite games ever! Fantastic artstyle and overall concept. Before I played it I thought the idea of FP-platforming was impossible, but it works brilliantly. Sure there is a bit of trial and error, but that is true for real life parkour as well. You try something over and over until you finally nail it. ME is perhaps a bit too unforgiving at times and sometimes geometry can get in the way in unelegant ways.

Combat is a very minor problem. If you want to get good times you need to avoid it in all but a handfull of spots. And I think it works ok in those spots. A biggers issue for me is vent/elevators. They break up the flow. The elevators are there to load levels obv, still annoying though.

I wonder if we will ever see a sequel. Mirror's Edge is really not an EA type franchise. They like broad franchises that people sink hundreds of hours into and buy weapon packs etc in their stores. I don't think ME can be that type of franchise. Hopefully they won't try to make it one. On the other hand people at DICE have several times said how much they line the franchise and that it's "too good to kill". If they decide to do it I hope they wait until next gen. Assuming next gen will have ~ten times as much RAM as this gen I think the level design would be much helped by that.

Average game with fantastic ideas. If they ever make a Mirrors Edge 2, which i really hope they do, there are plenty of things they need to improve, but the foundation is there for a truly great game to be made.

Btw TC, kb/m is a lot better than a gamepad for this game (don't know which on you are using). I beat it first with a gamepad, but switching to kb/m especially turning became a lot more precise. KevinV claims the opposite in his review, but I'm confident he is objectively wrong about that.

A really unique first-person platformer with fantastic visuals and sound design, but some frustrating trial-and-error gameplay with weak gunplay and hand-to-hand combat. 8/10

I think it is one of those games that the industry should learn from, it was flawed, underperformed somewhat, but it was different then most fps games, and the focus they made on movement were much needed in a genre where you fee llike a floating camera.

So Id call it one of those flawed games that had alot of potential, and had the right idea. It is a good game, but not a great game, so I were wuite impressed by it.

Basically, without the amazing visual fidelity in the PC version, it's flaws are a lot more obvious. I rated the ps3 version an 8.0 or maybe 7.5 something like that. After playing the PC version I thought it deserved a 10... seriously.

IMO it's an amazing game... but it deserves a second chance to correct all of the awkward mistakes.

Awesome game that had a lot of problems. Too much crappy gunfights and it forced you into battle sometimes which the game shouldn't have done. It also left you guessing too much for a agem that was supposed to be all about momentum and keeping you moving. I found myself stopped looking everywhere saying "where the fvck do I go?".

Overall it's very flawed but it has such great potential in it. Also the PC version is one of the best looking things you will ever see

Or better yet, avoid it altogether. Fews things feel as good as doing a perfect run while dodging bullets.

I still think it was the enemy positioning that let it down for the most part. Alot of the enemies were in very inconvenient places, and that's what led to people engaging in combat more than they really needed to. Moreso, the counter system was a little clunky in that it gave very little margin for error -- it actually flowed well when on the move (another reason why alot of people engaged in it), but that's if you pulled it off.

-

As for the discussion with the first person platforming, I thought it couldnt have handed its sense of weight and momentum better than it did. its sound design gave about as excellent of an audial representation of how fast you were running, falling and just general interaction with objects (hitting the floor, scraping across the ground, clutching a ledge etc.)
