Xbox and Xbox 360 were stellar consoles with nifty exclusives back in the day.Xbox one got power but is it because all of its games went multiplat on PC or Xbox One relies heavily on its US clientele only?

It's sad to see PS 4 and Switch selling so well over Xbox one.

Well?

Lack of exclusives, beaten out by the Switch attempting (and succeeding) at something new, Sony refusing to play nice with other consoles forcing some people to buy PS4s, a lot of MS exclusives porting over to PCs... The list goes on.

Plus, while the Xbox One S is a beast of a system for a console, it doesn't exactly have the game selection this gen to take advantage of that, and it ends up a direct competitor with PC... which simply has both a larger variety of games than any console can dream of and a scalability of power that no console will ever achieve; Sony and Nintendo both make it a point not to put themselves in that position.

Switch is a handheld, if it were a stand alone home console it would be flopping harder than the Wii U so really, apples and oranges there. Just sayin. :P

Also, X1 isn't failing it's just not in first place. Big difference.

It's a mix of the current internet mob mentality with some bad decisions made by MS. I'm personally happy with it and the X has by far more hours of use than the Pro and Switch combined.

The disastrous launch and lack of exclusives. I'm still baffled how they thought their original ideas for xbox one would appeal to gamers.

I think the start of the fall was when competitive tournaments started to move away from using Xbox One and started using PS4 for multi-platform games ( I still remember about the quote about making a tourney of every Xbox One game, but they just stopped doing it). And then later on everyone knows about the lack of exclusives and other competition.

They had one of the worst reveals and launches in history.

They sent the message they only cared about TV, Sports and CoD. The console was designed as Anti-Gamer as possible.

They took too long to change their ways and the damage was done. It was too late. First impressions are everything.

They failed to capture the hardcore gamer which is what you need if you want a successful console. The hardcore gamer will buy your console and tell everyone else to buy it.

PS4 won because their message was simple: “We are for the gamers and you can play used games on our system! Easy to use! No crazy 24 hour check in like Xbox rofl!”

They faltered at the start with stupid decisions ranging from pricing, power and lack of a gaming focus. And like typical gamers online, the mob mentality (Pokemon rage is the latest) continued long after the changes were reverted. The good news is that they faltering was good for the company and for gaming. Win for everyone.

The initial reveal pretty much killed it in its tracks. However since then they’ve done a lot of really good things, and they continue to do good things to help turn things around. As a gamer and consumer I’ve benefited pretty nicely from it so I think that it was a good thing that they were humbled with the Xbox One.

The question of this thread has been answered in many other similar threads, and the posts here pretty much repeat what we all know :

Don Mattrick (watch TV on your xbox)

The abysmal reveal (DRM and too little focus on games)

Kinect drove up the price of the console and nobody asked for the damn thing.

Lack of interesting exclusives in recent years.

....

The excellent Xbox One X has contributed to a turnaround and has restored my confidence in Microsoft, but it is too late to win this gen.

Bad decisions on the introduction of Xbox pissing off the fan base. Not creating good quality exclusives like Nintendo and Sony have put out all generation long. They have some good exclusives like Cup Head, Ori, Forza, Gears, and Halo, but mediocre stuff like Sea of Thieves, Crackdown 3, State of Decay, and Recore are not going to sell systems.

Oh and I forgot. Coming in at a higher price point then Sony with weaker hardware. This may of had the biggest effect on all of it.

The faux outrage from the games media tainted the opinion of the “informed consumers. The “informed” gaming consumers then tainted the casual gaming consumer pool.

Look where that pre-launch outrage got us... We are gonna be either streaming our games (online only) or paying $600+ for next gen consoles. The market proved the “informed” gamers don’t actually know what they want. Good job guys and girls smh

No!

MS's proud slogan this gen...

Phil Spencer , MS and last but not least...

"Play anywhere is amazing it's going to make M$ tons of money. Exclusives are anti-consumer"

"Gamepass is great I don't even care if the quality of MS games are trash..it's only a dollar"

"Xbox 1 X whooh hardware! Who cares about AAA exclusives when you can play slightly higher res mutiplats?" (psst everyone)

...corporate MS shills finally killed it.

PS4 hasn't be able to claim either of those things since 2017...

Effective 2017 Xbox One S is the cheapest base console, and X1X had the highest resolution.

Ironically, the same year lowest resolution console Nintendo Switch (which is about to pass Xbox One in over-all sales this year) released and also more expensive than X1S.

So, not only is the Switch the weakest system on the market with the lowest resolution, it along with base PS4 are both more expensive than base Xbox One S.

Try again!

The various game platforms, in order of popularity:

  1. Mobile - 90% of market.
  2. PC - Over 50% of market.
  3. PS4 and variants - Top seller of approx. 30% of market (Consoles total own only 30%)
  4. Switch
  5. Xbox One and variants

Saying this as an Xbox One owner... it was the worst waste of money this generation, given how the entire generation has gone. Of the four on that list that I do play (I don't play mobile), it's the only one I regret purchasing.

Honestly, people have short memories in gaming...especially casuals.

It's only us high strung hardcore gamers that keep these things highlighted. 2013 is ancient history in the mind of a causal gamer.

No one even thinks about what happened in E32013 when looking at a xbox today.

But TODAY they DO look at Xbox One's line up of games on the shelf compared to competitors PS4 and yes Switch. It's a system that retails for $300, more than Xbox One S.

  • They see God of War, Spiderman and Horizon Zero Dawn for PS4.
  • They see Zelda BOTW, Mario odyssey and Smash Bros Ultimate for Switch....
  • ...Then they see Sea of Thieves, State of Decay 2 and Crackdown 3 for Xbox.

They choose the system that has the best looking games OUTSIDE of multiplats.

This is all supported by real world results.

Just look at that list! * = exclusives. Xbox has NONE anyone wants. This is the reality.

2013 has nothing to do with it at this point.

And If a casual buys one system they're most likely not going to bother buying the other.

People can blame the X1 reveal at E3 but its alot more than that.

Sony has been proactive this gen while MS has been reactive.

Example: X1 had to have the failed kinect, reducing power, while Sony's PS4 had more power because of that, making games look better and consumer more inclined to go with the more powerful console for the same price. By the time Microsoft got production of the X1X in gear, sony was already developing AAA exclusives from momentum it had.

At that point, Microsoft had a more powerful console but no heavy hitter Exclusives to sell it with, making the more powerful console a moot point. Add to that gamepass, which made people with PC's completely dismiss the console.

Sony has been one step ahead of microsoft all this gen.

I'm a multi console/PC gamer since the 90's but honestly, the amount of jealousy that sprouted from the release of GOW and Spiderman on PS4 is the likes of which I haven't seen since PS1 gamers saw Goldeneye on the N64.

No exclusives.

No VR.

The majority of its non-exclusive 'exclusives' flopped horribly.

One of the most horrendous launches in console history.

Constantly being upstaged by Sony.

Out of touch with gamers.

Constant poor decisions.

Unable to learn from said poor decisions.

...need I go on? MS is a freaking laughingstock these days.

Their own hubris. Xbox was very successful last gen in the US so they got dumb and assumed they owned the entire market and tried to change it in their image. They thought everyone would follow in their steps to try and control the used games market and wanted to dictate how people would play games on their console. People gave them the middle finger, so they're pretending to be everyone's good buddy, and it's costing them tons of cash in the process. LOL!

@boxrekt: Typical troll....ask a question, dispute the answer, offer non related rebuke.

None of the things you mentioned were available at launch, and the launch price and resolutiongate were why Xbox never recovered to match PS4 in sales.

One S and One X were the consequence of that launch.

That fumbled launch was everything, had the xbox one launched without kinect and not so anti consumer we might have had a different gen, as it happens they launched the way they did, the market punished them for it.

The launch window is important people are going to see how your console actually performs, and based on that and how people react is basically going to determine the direction of the gen for you, now you can make ground up with enough software and price cuts, and the longer a gen goes the more likely someone is to make a supplementary console purchase but if you launch and you're more expensive, games perform worse, your software offering is sub par and you're seen as anti consumer then you've pretty much scuppered yourself before the product even launches.

MS recovered by leaning in on the more hardcore of their fanbase, the X1X regaining them the most powerful console crown, the elite controller being a premium peripheral that was marketed well and again leaned into the general consensus that the xbox pad is preferable to the PS pad, they were never going to recover completely this gen though, their strategy assumed they would be the go to home for third party titles so under investment in studios hurt them this gen. Whilst the xbox brand remains healthy it is clear MS will want to come out swinging next gen.

Here's where I got the figures from for the posted percentages. And, it's 40% for consoles combined, not thirty.

The order of console popularity was based on (currently-outdated) sales figures. You can look those up for yourself.

So, do you have anything factual to back up what you're saying? Or are you just going to spam the thread, as you did with that last post?

Yikes, what are you even on about stinky? lol

The only fact of mine you should be talking about is me stating Switch is selling because it's a handheld. As my original post said, if it were competing in the classic Home Console space along with X1 and PS Bore it would be flopping harder than Wii U.

Now, if you have nothing relevant in that regard kindly take you worthless weak bait trolling elsewhere. :P
