I'd have to say Resident Evil 2.  And I can't believe people are actually saying Resident Evil 4 was scary.  It has NOTHING on the other games in the series when it comes to how scary it is (it's the best though).

The sewer board in Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire for the N64. Between the dark atmosphere and hearing those monster in the water and knowing you had to go in it, it just creeped me out big time. Ever since that game, I have a hard time and hate going into any type of water in a game. It has scarred me for life.

The sewer board in Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire for the N64. Between the dark atmosphere and hearing those monster in the water and knowing you had to go in it, it just creeped me out big time. IG-88 Scared me...Couldn't move after the horrific battle.

I always seemed to run out of ammo facing that guy, but I eventually beat him. The train level before you fought him was hard, but now that I think it, that whole game was just hard.

Another vote for System Shock 2 here. Don't play it alone in a dark room with surround sound, that's for sure. I remember creeping through the Von Braun and hearing one of the hybrids (think head crab infested scientists from Half-Life) off in the distance, then all of a sudden the rear speakers go off: "UNNGH!! KILL MEEEE!" and I just about jumped out of my skin. I wirl around and there's one RIGHT BEHIND ME clubbing me with a wrench. The game doesn't have a lot of gore, but it doesn't need to, because it has the psychological disturbing terror technique down pat. Everyone else on the ship is dead or a mutant alien, and when you get to the mall level, the ship's computer is going on about how many shopping days there are left until Christmas while obsequious C-3PO style service robots and Robocop style mechs are trying to blow your head off. And the logs that you find from the dead crewmembers before they are killed or slowly are taken over and go insane. It's creeping me out just by thinking about it. Definitely a good scary game. Too bad EA is being such pricks about the license (which they don't fully own, btw).

Yip System Shock 2 hands down. Running along a corridor and all of a sudden a dead crew member flashes infront of you, blood on walls telling you to run and the sounds of the zombie guys moaning and mattering. Seconded by resi evil remake only because when I played it there was a storm outside and I had surrond sound in a dark boxed in room in the early hours of the morning, A friend and I put rules on what time we were allowed to play it.
