Silent hill and siren also are scary too. Id say condemned is too.

But what personally scared me, was jericho.. which is really underrated.

Plot evolves around this, that god tried create his image in human form.
But it all went bad and condemened it into another dimension.
Every now and again, it takes a piece of earth with it, creating a hellish zone, and your part of a team, travelling to different times to stop it from reoccuring once and for all. Kind of a like a F.e.a.r unit but more advanced, you even have a priest in your team and has dual handguns!

A must play for horror fans, because it made me pray more.

This is a nazi chick helping gods first creation. The best level are battling in the river of blood and the fight with the dead children in that crypt.

g0ddyX

Personally I found Jericho to be one of the most un-frighting, horrid games in recent years.

There was only so much of the 'team' of specialists yelling at the undead 'things' and proving to be useless, than I could handle.
The voice acting, the character design, the gameplay. Ughhh. Even the shock horrors were poor.

Compared to Undying its merley a bad aftertaste.

Hell I regret that I still have the 360 version on my shelf.

It sucks as the plot was quite promising.

any level from dead space...im currently playing the game at the moment......Its THE best horror survival game I have ever played. Way better than Stalker, way better than bioshock, way better than system shock 2, and way better than resident evil Code veronica ( my ex-favorite horror survial game). Its just that good. I love this game. ReaperV7
I have been playing through Dead Space, and personally not finding it that scary at all.

It delievers a few jumps now and again, but it wears off over time.

Mind you Bioshocks horror wore thin rather fast - though it was not exactly a survival horror / action horror game... rather more shooter focused, though I dont think it comes close to Shock 2 or STALKER in terms of scares... However its of a different variety, and sty-le of horror.

I'd say first time going through tunnels in Fallout 3 is pretty freaky because you haven't built yourself up yet. But in terms of scary that I've played I'm going with RE: CV, first time the dogs pop out from no where freaked me out. Thankfully I had double MP5s.

Nice posts!

I like the Zelda OOT/MM references and of course Ravenholm from HL2! I'm currently scratching my head to come up with a scene/game as well.....

*scratch*

Well, I think RE: CV was pretty creepy. The 'brother imitating his sister' thing was pretty weird as were some other parts of that particular RE.

The regenerators (or whatever they were called) of RE4 were not scary though IMO... probably because I had zero problems killing them...

I pretty much NEVER get scared from games, but I've had a couple rare moments.

1. The Suffering- The last level. The images of dead girls randomly popping up onto the screen while I was running around trying to fix the lighthouse or whatever made me heart beat pretty fast.

2. Resident Evil 4- When you first enter the castle. The mumbling guys in the black robes who would keep sneaking up on me freaked me out a bit.

Other than that, I've never really felt fear through video games.

I cannot find any worthy screens, but The Tower of Latria 3-1 and especially 3-2 in Demon's Souls. Both have an extremely dark, tense and foreboding atmosphere that has you on the edge of your seat with caution with every step you take.

AvP2 had some scary levels in the marine campaign, can't really pick one though.

Cradle in Thief3, and the ending were scary in a good way. Bloodlines had few good ones too like the haunted hotel and werewolf parts.

ManicAce

Diablo I was and still is the only game that makes me squirm a little. I don't knwo what it is but the ambient music and sound effects going down to hell are pretty eerie, that game was pure atmosphere and they did it well.

FEAR has some scares but nothing too bad, Ravenholm had a creepy atmosphere but the 2nd time around it wasn't as scary. X18 was meh, I had such high expectations for it hearing about it from everybody but it came up disappointing to me. Really save for the psudogiant and some telekensis attacks from Burer wasn't that scary. In fact I am more creeped out @ night and Fleshes or psudodogs or bloodsuckers attack @ random. Of course the Saiga makes quick work of them.

Hopefully Siren will get some chills out of me. As for all time? Those easily go to SH2 and 3 which have some of the scariest levels in all of gaming. That hospital in 3 when it goes evil always gives me the chills *shudders*

That's almost exactly how I feel. The reason I thought condemned was so damn scary was by the end, you just felt like you were going insane. I frequently swung at things that weren't really there by the end. The mall level was especially good at that. Manikins coming alive somehow terrifies me enough to swing at ones that don't move.

For some reason I have it easier to be scared with console games (Siren, Fatal Frame, Silent Hill) than the PC games I've been scared of. I have played Thief, Vampire: The Masquerade and Stalker and wasn't really scared by any of them. I have however been really scared when I played Penumbra and that astronaut zombie in Time Commander freaked me out.

The scariest game is probably the Fatal Frame franchise IMO. The scariest creatures in a game has to be the zombies in OoT (I was young alright!) or the regenerators in RE4. The children in Silent Hill is also really freaky.

Fatal Frame and silent hill are third-person games, in which analog works better than the mouse and keyboard.

First person horror games generally freaks me out more though.

Haha at the OoT/MM posts, back in the day those used to scare me alot. Not like jumpy scare but in the Forest/Shadow Temple, Well, and The Cow Side quest from MM did scare me. Its been years since ive been scared from a game. RE4 had the regenerators they were freaky and BioShock has made me jump once so far (just started it yesterday). I don't play as many horror games as I wish I would.

This level is the most terrifying level ever. Even more scarier than the Silent Hill games (except for the elementary school in SH1, that can't be beat).

This is a strange answer, and note I never even played this series before, but watching Snake crawl through the super oven, slowly dying, while everyone else was getting killed above, it was almost to much to bear, and I was seriously afraid Snake would just cook to death. I just gained respect for that guy for he has done for the industry, and when I get my hands on a PS3 I certainly will have MGS4 as soon as I have a PS3.

No. I don't know why console games have it easier to scare. Maybe it is because PC game feels more technical and cold when I play them and console games feels more organic.

I have it easier to image myself that I am in a console game when I play it. With PC games I sense the hardware and technical threats more and that impresses me but I never feel like the worlds I'm playing in is alive. Some PC games do but not the onces that is supposed to scare me. Penumbra is the only exception.

What is the scariest level that you found in a game? Feel free to post screenshots. Mine was "We Don't Go To Ravenholm" in Half Life 2, it's not like I'llcrap my pants when I play thisbut it justfeel a bit freaky.

I found the enemies too comedic looking to be scary. IMO, Fallout 3 and Doom 3 had the "scariest" levels/areas. Of course I only played both games at night, alone and in the dark...

After playing Half Life Ep 1, "Low Life" is also one of the scariest level. You're underground, have to rely on you flashlight that often go out if don't turn off, and tons of fast zombies and zombines coming at you, in the dark.

God.. people are going to think im an Idiot but the Playstation 1 Version of Doom has got it all.. the Creepy lighting and Background music creates a real Horror FPS Experiance. Cant say as much for the PC version but the PS1 version is really great. If you have the PC version of Doom 2 there is a PSX Total Conversion that you can use on Zdoom or Skulltag.

Ravenholm, the second level of Doom 3 (after the demons emerge), and the last couple levels of FEAR: Extraction Point.

The hedge maze in RE 4 was pretty tense, but not scary. I find it kind of funny that some people were scared by that game.

I found the entirety of Penumbra: Black Plague to be frightening. When you saw an enemy your only option was to run away or be killed. Dashing through pitch black hallways, having no idea where your going is a unique and horrifying experience.

The devs next game is set in an abandoned medieval castle. They also have a great blog where they discuss horror in videogames and where they're taking their next project.

Yeah the music made the temple pretty creepy. Shadow Temple was more creepy through.

Whenever I was younger I hated the Re-deads so much that I still hate them in OoT when I play them not as much as whenever I first played the game but yeah I still hate them.

Those Re-deads scare the crap out of me when I was younger. I still wonder how OoT and Majora's Mask got a E rated, because there were a lot of creepy stuff in both games.

Damn I wasn't the only one what a relief lol.
