I was thinking about how action games should evolve and I came up with a great idea. Combine shooter elements along with fighter elements for deep combat. Imagine a game where you could play like a 3rd person shooter like Gears of War (with about 2-3 times as fast gameplay) where you could push a button, lets say the start or select button, to switch to melee mode where you can chain melee combos with complexity like Devil May Cry.

Ok, now add in RPG elements like skills and leveling with good character customation. Add to the scale of enviroments (not like making it bigger, just more stuff), enemys (bosses that are at least 20 times the size of you) and vehicles (aircraft that can hold 5-8 people at once). Online should be insanely intense like melee sword fighting in mid air or shooting in the air while flying. I'm thinking of becoming a devoloper, to make a game like this happen :D I have a ton more ideas to go along with this that no one has ever thought of doing.

Post feedback and your ideas on how games should evolve. I need to know what others think.

If the developers can make all this work without any of the mechanics being too shallow or complex, then awesome. But why would I want to do all these intense combos when I can just take a shotgun out and blow them to bits?

you could do both in this game I'm thinking about, shotguns should be faster than most games are doing them. Lets say skilled players who melee could just dash up to you, kick you in the air and do an aireal combo just before you reload ;)

There was something like that in Soul Calibur III. It was an RTS/RPG/Figher with a terrible story. It failed. Hard. It had a lot of potentional, but the only fun thing about it was the actual fighting.

Did anyone play that mode?

RPG elements would be a bad idea and counter productive to your "fast paced" gameplay.

You'd spend time worrying about equiping the best armour and crap like that instead of just killing things.

Devil May cry 4 already has 80% of your suggestions.

XD I was thinking about this too, I personally love the idea, it would be immensely deep with the button combos and weapon/armor selection.

That reminds of the Krauser fight in Resident Evil 4. I would be reloading, then Krause, like, went in to hyper-speed and roundhouse kicked me and began to knife me.

Yeah, it could work. It could work... But it's pretty easy to screw up if you don't balance it. It's a good idea, but it would have to be in the right hands.

Anyway, you asked us what some of our ideas are. Well, mine is in my blog. It's over 15,000 words, though, so I'm not sure if anyone really wants to read the whole thing.

It won't slow it down because you can chance between 8 different weapons at the same time using d-pad on the fly so you don't need to worry about equips plus you don't change armor that much in rpgs anyway so lets say you can go to the armor/weapon shops when your not fighting.

well ninja gaiden is probably the fastest action game out there and isn't cheap, but it is very hard and does get pretty rediculous at times (especially towards the end).

Ninja Gaiden 2 does actually have a much improved combat system. It's not just a couple new moves like in DMC

i was thinking with the xbox 360 d-pad in mind :P

which is terrible.

but also i dont like the idea of taking my thumb off the left analogue stick whilst in the thick of action, it just doesnt work with a gamepad (looks at COD4).

It'd be pretty easy with the PC.

Yeah, I didn't really have the 360 controller in mind when I said that lol. Guess you could just push the analog in and use that to switch between stuff?

Mostly because games are made catering to the console player audience.
