Sony has taken (and is taking) a few things from its competitors, sure, but what's wrong with that? They take the features and improve upon them.

To be honest, it just seems like people are realizing Sony is going to steal its competitors online, make it better, for free, and we all know what kind of effect that will have on consumers. It also helps justify the PS3's price.

Anyway, my point was there is nothing wrong with Sony taking achievements and Mii's because both features are good so what's the problem with adding them to the already strong list of features for the PS3?

Am I insane to think that it's OK for companies to copy from one another? They all do it, but it's not like they've all stopped being original.

Anyway, what do you guys think?

Well if it becomes a standard for consoles(ie Ananlog stick, gamepad) its okay, but if its something that is innovative and makes a console unique..well thats copying.

i think, every company "copies" another.

I could easily say, Microsoft copied the PS2 and made a console themselves (Xbox) because they too wanted a peice of the console market share.

In short copying is OKAY, to a certain extent.

How do you feel when the person next to you copies off your test?

Do you cover your answers with your arm

Or do you pretend you don't see and let them do it?

From a business point of view, its normal. However, when i look at it, they keep copying ideas, it just makes you think 'Why cant this company think of anything original, thats smart, by itself'. they just cant think of stuff by themselves thats original, thats why i find it annoying.

It'd be different, but Sony tends to "bash" the competition's "gimmick" and then later and usually within the very same generation. Copy that EXACT same feature! But they won't acknowledge that they copied someone, oh and for improving. Tell me how six axis tilt is an improvement over the Wiimote. Tell me.

It doesn't bother me at all that Sony "copied" from anyone. It's what businesses do and need to do to remain competitive with their rivals. It's just another example of why competition is a good thing. For example, if Xbox and Xbox Live didn't exsist, Sony wouldn't have even tried with PSN to deliver decent online because they wouldn't have to...

Where did I say the Sixaxis was better than the Wiimote?

And do you expect Sony to show weakness (in business that's not good) and say "Jeez, we were wrong so we're adding the feature now. MS/Nintendo were right all along".

It has nothing to do with copying. I'm just saying they could have made a new font just for PS3 rather than using the Spiderman font.

Well actually Sony is funding Spiderman 3 so they didn't exactly steal that.

So what if some of their hardware/features aren't original though? Are Nintendo original? Are Microsoft?

Do you think the touch pen was invented by Nintendo? Or motion sensing?

Was online invented by MS?

Think of it from a marketing point of view. Spiderman 3 is going to be advertised everywhere worldwide in May when released. What's wrong with Sony taking a font that will be known worldwide and using it for the PS3 to catch quick attention?

Because it's a kick in the balls to who came up with the original idea -it's dirty business. Remember what happened when Sony was forced to not steal? we ended up with a ridiculous looking boomerang controller. Next thing you know they re-use the exact same controller from last gen but copy Nintendo's motion sensing.

Nintendo brings innovative controls to the table

Microsoft brings an excellent online service to the table

Sony brings nothing new to the table so they steal.

Er.. I don't care if it is an improvement of their original controller. The point is that the original post itself says that sony "improves" on the very thing they copy. the Six Axis is in no way, an improvement of the Wiimote.

And do you expect Sony to show weakness (in business that's not good) and say "Jeez, we were wrong so we're adding the feature now. MS/Nintendo were right all along".

There is no justification for arrogance.

I mean, geez.. it is as if Sony is INCAPABLE of doing anything on their own and just decide to wait till someone else gets a great idea and then copy after it.

Sure, copying is part of business. But so is also thinking up your own ideas and taking your own risks.

Honestly, if Sony was the only company in the market truly the game industry will become stagnant and lose originality.

I guess this is all to do with Sony copying from M$ and nitendo stuff.

Well, if it infringes on copyright or patents then they will get sued.
If not then either the competitor is too stupid not to copyright or patent it, or that the feature is so common that they cannot apply for a patent.

What I am saying is that, if Cony copied something original I am sued they would be sued, same goes for Nintendo and M$.

Its wrong beucase thats all sony does. you see, Xbox 360 has the best online, wii has the best  motion sensing. Thats what makes them unique. Sony just takes some of there ideas and half ass it. They master nothing. They put a tacked on motion sensing and put a crap online. There console is not unique, becuase they copy. And dont tell me its unique becusae they have bluray becuase that has nothing to do with the gameing side of it.

thats what people said, when Sony used DVD.

Would you prefer Sony leave its customers with no motion sensing, no rumble, and no online features? All this whining about stealing is really just jealousy. The fans of other systems are unhappy that Sony is taking "exclusive" features of their own systems and incorporating it into the PS3.

Maybe if they get rumble back it will atleast be a normal controller.

Anyways, the PSN is not gonna stay the same, I'm sure we will here more about this next week at the GDC.

If it's standard it is ok but if only one other company is using it and the company copying tries to claim it as there own and claims they invented it first then it is copying.

It's not out of jealousy that people dislike it. OMG, I just can't understand how you people can actually ratioinalize that it MUST be jealousy. It is the arrogance that gets me, Sony will bash their competition's "gimmick" or unique feature in public... but in reality they are already making plans and considering copying that very same idea. I remember back when Sony was mocking Nintendo's "wiimote" and motion sensing technology.... then announced they would have it as well and magically they forgot about their previous bashing.

Somehow though, I remember Sony's Corporate heads saying that Xbox Live was doing things (Achievements, friends lists, etc) that they weren't interested in doing, and that their online was going to be about playing games.
Seems to me that Achievement points went from being something Cows and Sony thought were horribly stupid (you can't use them for anything, they cried) to being something that the PS3 should now have.
With Sony ripping the innovative features (such as the Miis and Achievements) it makes me just wonder what is to stop them (or any company) from just stealing anothers whole idea? That is supposed to be the purpose of competition. Getting innovative and creative to beat a rival. Not just stealing their stuff.

Anyway, my point was there is nothing wrong with Sony taking achievements and Mii's because both features are goodthe-very-best
I wish I could turn back time to like 2 weeks ago and ask you "Don't you wish the PS3 had Mii's like the Wii does?", I bet your response would have been like "Hell no, that's for little kids and non-gamers, hardcore PS3 gamers don't want some stupid mii's," or something like that.

What's the point of copying other people's ideas and not putting in your own good ideas? That's what Sony is doing. If they came up with some ideas of their own, it would be different. Never have I seen MS or Nintendo ever copy off of Sony. When the most original idea a game company can come up with is the EyeToy, there's a problem.

[QUOTE="the-very-best"]Anyway, my point was there is nothing wrong with Sony taking achievements and Mii's because both features are goodZerostatic0

That wouldn't have been my response but I do see your point.

In any case, there's nothing wrong with having more features.
