In real-time combat, your party is controlled by scripts, whereas in turn-based combat, you can decide all of your characters' actions. In real-time combat, your enemies are limited in scale to what will fit on the screen. In turn-based combat, enemies can be as big as the game designers want them to be. In real-time combat, your view of the battlefield is limited to over-the-shoulder and some analog stick camera control, which means that you can lose sight of enemies. In turn-based combat, the camera can have unlimited camera angles, and can be as cinematic and epic as the game designers want them to be. Let's also not forget that turn-based combat can also be incredibly strategic and challenging, with anticipation being just as important as reaction. I just don't understand this aversion to turn-based combat in JRPGs.

Some devs are just trying to be innovative.Nothing wrong with that IMO.

I like both.

I prefer turn-based strategy the most, though.

I don't think turn based combat in and of itself is the problem, but how is it handled.

Games like, say, Fallout and Xcom, or Chrono Trigger did some really good turn-based systems.

The problem comes when the "cinematic experience" begins to screw with the gameplay. Anyone else remember those "fun", "fun" times in FFVIII, just choosing Guardian Force (or whatever powerful attack you had) for 9999 damage over and over?

At the end of the day it's a matter of personal preference.  So my preference is real time because I consider turn based to be extremely boring and bland.  An exception for me would be the turn based nature of Civilization series by Sid Meier.

Amen.  I especially loved the battle system in Fallout Tactics.

They need to just keep working on a system fusing the best of both. Personally, I hated FFXII for that as the cinematics for moves was blah as there were none and I generally felt not ever really in control which was 10x worse than turn-based battles.

They're BORING, tedious, and pacing is excruciatingly painful. It's like watching an Anime. It may be ultra-violent, the visual artistry is gorgeous.......but it can be marred by tedious, over-convoluted, psycho-babbling dialogue and plot twists.....which can stray the viewer away from becoming interested in the Anime.

It's like..........GET TO THE F---ING POINT.

Of Course, just my opinion.

Evverything you said is why I coudn't get into FF. Although Never winter nights and KOTOR did the turn-based gameplay pretty good. The turn-based system in FF made it boring for me.

People seem to have got it into there heads that it's old and outdated and want it replaced with fast paced combat system.. or dumbed down system which appeals to the simpltons.

As you said, that's a problem with implementation, not the concept itself. Especially with next-gen systems, I don't see why attacks in turn-based systems can't be varied, dynamic, and exciting.
