N64 - Mario 64 was my childhood. Loved Banjo-Kazooie, Tony Hawk, Ken Griffey Jr., Mario Kart, Mario Tennis, Goldeneye as well

Xbox - all I was really into was Madden + Halo, so I couldn't have had a better console. I also enjoyed LOTR and JSRF. Controller S ftw!

This gen was tricky, I had both PS3 and Wii, and also caught up on some PS2/GCN/SNES classics. Overall I'd say the Wii got the most use and I had the most fun on it. Although Nazi Zombies and FIFA were a blast that I spent hours and hours on.
But definitely Wii this gen

NES (double dragon, shinobi, contra, mario, duck hunt, that bootleg track game that didn't work) SNES (Chrono Trigger, FF VI, terranigma, Turtles in Time, super mario world) PS1 (xenogears, Gran Turismo, Chrono Cross, all the FF's except 8) Dreamcast (Powerstone, Shemue, Sonic Adventures, NBA 2k, NFL 2k, Virtua Tennis, Crazy Taxi) PS3 (Warhawk, Infamous 2, Killzone 3, God of war 3, Metal Gear online, MAG, Little Big Planet 2, Modnation Racers, UC 2-3, Resistance 2, Super Stardust HD, Everyday Shooter, Wipeout Fury) Honorable mention Gensis: Streets of Rage, Sonic, Rocket Knight Adventure was solid games but SNES had Chrono Trigger

I had been gaming before the video game crash of 1983, before many on this forum were born. Here are my choices: 1st Generation: None (I was too young, as that generation ended when I was about two/three years old. I was born in 1975) 2nd Generation : Atari 2600 (I remembered when it used to be called the Atari VCS) 3rd Generation : NES 4th Generation : SNES 5th Generation : I skipped this generation as I was not into console gaming at that time 6th Generation : GameCube 7th Generation : Wii (if including handheld systems, Nintendo DS Lite)

3rd-gen: NES. I knew only one other household with a Master System, and I never got the chance to play on it, so yeah. But it did have plenty of classics for me to enjoy. Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Punch-Out!!, Crystalis... 4th-gen: SNES. I didn't have anything against the Genesis, but the SNES was what I had-simple as that. Super Mario World, Zelda: A Link to the Past, Yoshi's Island, and Star Fox were some of my favorites from back in the day. Looking back on it now, I'd add Super Metroid and a giant heaping of Squaresoft titles to that list of games. 5th-gen: N64. Had a PlayStation once, but returned it because it didn't really have any titles I was interested in at the time. GoldenEye 007, Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Jet Force Gemini, Bomberman 64, Donkey Kong 64, Super Smash Bros., and Perfect Dark were some of my mainstays, and I still enjoy them today (well, except for JFG, which I traded in years ago and have yet to find a replacement copy). Looking back on it now, I should have added a Sega Saturn to my collection, but most of its noteworthy titles would have required an import and Japanese lessons anyway. I still view the PS1 as predominantly a JRPG console thanks to Squaresoft, with relatively fewer titles to offer in other genres. 6th-gen: GameCube. Got two Xboxes much later, the first of them right as 7th-gen was beginning. Super Smash Bros. Melee, Metroid Prime, Zelda: The Wind Waker, and TimeSplitters 2 and Future Perfect still remain some of my favorites from this generation. However, this was the generation where I started swinging predominantly toward PC gaming thanks to the likes of Battlefield 1942 and Unreal Tournament 2004-not that I was a stranger to it before (I've been doing it since the DOS days), but I had regular access to a decent desktop computer again (unlike most of 4th and 5th gen). It's also the generation where increasingly more games were multiplatform, so there were less exclusives to speak of. Looking back on it now, the GameCube had some great exclusives, but only this time did I feel like the other consoles had some truly compelling exclusives of their own. The Xbox didn't have many exclusives thanks to the PC, but I had to have Steel Battalion at any rate, and it had the unquestionably best multiplatform versions of games that weren't ported to the PC for whatever reason, like TimeSplitters 2 and Future Perfect. I still don't have a PS2, but games like Odin Sphere and Okami definitely got my attention. Also, from a hardware standpoint, I'd take the Xbox over the GameCube, but only for the sole reason that the Wii is 99% backwards-compatible. Oh, and as for the poor Dreamcast, I did enjoy what it did have to offer when visiting neighbors who did own one. It's actually how I first played Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, even if it was on PC and PS1 first. 7th-gen: Wii. I still don't own the other consoles. More Zelda titles as usual, starting with Twilight Princess and ending with Skyward Sword, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Metroid Prime Trilogy, and now, Xenoblade. I was excited about the possibilities of the Wiimote + Nunchuk control scheme, but unfortunately, MotionPlus was what I was expecting from the very beginning. Still, it was trying to do something different, and I appreciated that since anything the X360 and PS3 did, my new gaming PC could do better (unless it's a game that doesn't have a PC version for whatever reason). Unfortunately, the Wii system friend code didn't exactly work like I expected it to; games still had their own friend codes, and there wasn't an easy way to check if someone was online or not, making SSBB matches difficult without a bit of pre-planning beforehand. It took the 3DS for them to finally get their act together with their online infrastructure. Notice a pattern here? I tend to like Nintendo's first party titles quite a bit, enough to keep me interested in their platforms as a side to my usual main course of PC gaming. It's probably why I only bother with their consoles these days; that, and they're trying to think of new ways to play games without totally rejecting proven control methods, at least when they do it right. (Not like forcing touchscreen-only controls on the DS like the two Zelda titles and Star Fox Command, instead of using it as a complement to the D-Pad and buttons. What were they thinking?)

Since it's only about consoles, it's rather easey, if it would include PC and handhelds, it would be near impossible to answer. So here we go:

Master System - Genesis - Ps1 - Ps2 - Ps3

^ Ps wins for the JRPGs, especially the ones from NIS (or in the Ps1 phase Square) / published by NISA

20 years ago, SNES. Then after that, I don't know why I only own Sony consoles from the PS1 to the PS2 now PS3. But, I currently own an Xbox, had the GameCube last gen too.. This gen my first nextgen purchase was my Xbox 360, I sold it and since then I've owned the PS3, soon I'll buy a 360 though.

WarTornRuston

I can legitimately say I never knew anyone that had a neo-geo back then, and I was the only person in my group of friends and relatives that had a saturn. They were just too expensive, especially the neo-geo, and all the best Saturn games were imports. Now it's no big deal to look up and just order them online, but as a kid in the 90's there was no way I was going to do that, and I'm not too sure if anyone besides diehards would have gone out of their way to get them then either.

That is true. I had the Neo Geo CD and import Saturn. The import Saturn waas fantastic. Wipeout XL, All the Capcom fighters, and a proper version of Daytona.

I love my Saturn... but it just doesn't have enough. PSx was the WalMart of consoles that generation. Hard to say anything else. Saturn had more of my favorite games: Dragon Heroes, Guardian heroes, Darkstalkers, X-men vs. Street Fighter etc. but it just kinda crumbled after that. Neo Geo was a cabinet at home... I loved samurai showdown and a few others but now that their games are getting released on the DLC side of things it's easier to see how bad many of them were. (I had one for a small amount of time but they were freakishly expensive and horribly undersupported).

On this part of the world the Saturn was practically crap. The Neo Geo was practically the same because of the price and was pointless if you weren't into the arcade world or fighters.

Also for someone that had a chance to choose the systems to have, they didn't had a chance against the SNES/Genesis and PS respectively.

I did not hop on the Neo-Geo train til the CD came out. I believe it was released after the N64 so it was pretty screwed by that time. Still it was great. I actually bought a 3DO just for the best and only version of Super Street Fighter 2 at the time. I loved 2D fighters and a Neo-Geo and Saturn was the only way to go til the Dreamcast came out.

It was but I had the CD based version that came out later. Almost all of my shopping was done by internet but games were usually only around $30 or $40 unless it was a new release. I spent way more money on my Saturn and for games like Wipeout XL, and Samurai Shodown 3 you could spent close to $100 on the game. The most I ever paid for a game was Half-life and Propeller Arena on the Dreamcast. Both cost $150 or so a piece Half-life was released in extremely small quantities in Europe before being pulled and cancelled and Sega cancelled Propeller Arena after 9/11. Point is a gamer will pay for something he wants.....That is why PSN will not be free next gen, game prices and DLC will get more expensive and we will buy whatever Limp system Nintendo comes out with. They have us and they know it.

SNES

PS1

PS2

PS3/360 lets be real here people, there almost exactly the same thing when it comes to the games aside from the few exclusives. Overall though the 360 was a bit better than the Ps3 from 2006-2009, although now the Ps3 has the slight edge.

Anything by Working Designs. Holy grail is of course Panzer Dragoon Saga (which is good but not as good as it is made out to be). Get a Ram Cart. Get the fighting games and if you're really dedicated get the gear to play steel battalion (which is cool but got old and was a hassle to get set up right).

3rd Gen: NES (I wish I had TurboGraphics-16 and Sega Master System back then :/ , but NES did have the best games so I was happy with that)
4th Gen: SNES (I have both the Genesis and SNES, but SNES had tons of great games so that won out)
5th Gen: PS1 (I hate its load times with a passion, but the sheer number of great games broke my stubborness, I also have a Sega Saturn and N64)
6th Gen: GC (I have Dreamcast and PS2, but GC had a rather large amount of great games, I have more games for PS2 but any multiplat game I perferred on GC for its better load times and frame rates)
7th Gen: PS3 (I also have a Wii, This gen has had very few great games so its kind of sad, but PS3 won by default since the Wii has a mountain of shovelware)

Handhelds

4th Gen: Gameboy (also had gamegear)
5th Gen: Gameboy Color
6th Gen: GBA
7th Gen: PSP (also have DS)
8th Gen: Vita (also have 3DS)

Arke:"This is a pretty nice template for systems / generations.http://www.gamefaqs.com/systems.html" They don't have all systems or games though so uh. well why not I guess: 1st gen: Sears Tele-Games: I mean sure I did play an Odyssey, and a friend had the Nintendo TV rectangle or i forgot what it was called it was long as hell ago so spare me, but the Tele-game looked futuristic, and we were making all kinds of 207 jokes and stuff and it played pong the best of any thing else. i wasn't really into Pong that much though to say i was interested in gaming progress at that point until slightly later on. But it looked cool. Would post a picture but no lvl high enough. 2nd Gen: Intellivision: The 2600 was good, and to be honest, it it even now, the only system to do more than the SW was made to do than any other system. Atari took it;s pong technology, and put it into a machine. Then, had games that could even compete with 3rd gen system games in some ways. (but not much) but the fact that the whole thing was stuck in the past. No improvements were made, all moves to bring it forward were cancelled from the articles from back then. Also, a lot of systems started to do the same thing. Astrocade and the Odyssey 2 came out later and barely had better graphic or gameplay compared to the 2600, and that's where the intellivision came in. It had much better games, was not influenced, and while the 2600 did have some games that were not strictly arcade (a lot more than people think.) not only did the intellivision have more, but enough power to utilize certain genres like rpg very well. Heck, that was the only time I even cared about D&D as it had some amazing games on that system, and it had many other games that were full of adventure. The Colecovision was more powerful in some areas, but it failed to have the ability for expansive games and that limited the mainstream genres on it, just like how the 2600 being outdated technically at launch limited it's genre appeals. I would give the 2600 2nd and the Vectrex 3rd, because the Vectrex was like the virtual awesomness back then. laugh at me now but it was some cool ass stuff. Needed more games though. 3rd gen: Atari 7800/ Sega Master System I can't choose one of the above over the other. Each has a great library filled with unique games and I have no problem going back to games on these systems occasionally. Even individually, i prefer both systems over the NES for too many different reasons and both have more advantages to the Nes then the other way around individually. Also, nes games are hard to come back to, and many didn't have much appeal for me at the time and still don't as much now. Uniqueness was rare to find on the Nes. you might have a game where you kill snowman with a toothpick with a flame thrower, but it would play like 4000 other games, Also, rectangle controller with compressed buttons. But it's still up there. 4th gen: Neo-Geo(Off) Genesis (Mainstream) Portables: Lynx Ok, so most people don't know what a SNK machine is compared to GEN, SNES, and even TG, so I have to in that regard. The SNK is often considered expensive, but that's slightly untrue ignorance given that there were $300 versions of the console around the time, and games were expensive, but not always over $100 like people kept saying. To me, it's the only true jump to 4th gen with its amazing games and at its release, great unique games and great variety (at release) and it as the gen went on, improved very fast and I always went and got the next best game. But on the mainstream side, i would have to say Genesis. because the Tg-16 was good, and you could argue it had the better library, but the problem is that its american library was way to small. Until the Cd Add-on came out, but that thing has issues preventing any chance of winning. The SNES was interesting but so many things wrong, its start was terrible, It was all brand name that a lot of games even became popular on those systems. There were games that were just 8-bit games with more colors, tired concepts, and the like, but over time that did not become a problem. But afterwards, not including the Sega add-ons, the gen just had the better library. The SNES started gaining to many unoriginal, copy cat, cash-ins, 40 cents worth of effort, unfinished, games in its library. It's the only system where actually not exploring for yourself and listening to magazines only was almost an actual fact to go by. I mean trying to name 13 or more good games fro that system at the time the gen ended would have been stretching. Also, the gen had the Sega Cd, which failed for lack of advertisement and support from Sega, some of the games on it were pretty good. The only real bad add-on was the 32X. The Super FX chip for the SNES would not impress me for I had some advanced PC games and owned a Neo-Geo so i was not getting the mainstream "OMG it's almost 3D" which is, just no. Also, blurry pixelated polygon models would later end up what would be in its next system. As for portables, the LYNX just won. Period. Tetris was the reason to even have a gameboy, and even then, you could go only 6 games that were good for it after. it had a battery advantage. Not as much as what people keep saying, but it did have a battery advantage. that's it. The Lynx would dominate handhelds technically until mid-GBA's life cycle with its games. (Other than sound anyway.) 5th gen: 3DO/PS1 First of all, the Nec Pc-FX is crap, I took a dump on the Virtual boy, I set-fire the amiga, Apple had no idea what they were doing with bandai, who couldn't even make games, and the Neo-Geo CD is not a 5th gen console, it;s a Neo-Geo with a slow as hell CD drive, but apparently it's been considered 5th gen even back when it came out. Ugh. Anyway, the jaguar had/has tons of theoretical power, but it was never achieved, and didn't get many games. The N64 had the whole mentality of :The game franchise i am loyal to is in 3D let's rate it high and call it revolutionary just because!". I am not going to expand on this too much in this thread, and I am not going to expand the games I liked and disliked on it, but i will say OoT is one of the worst POS mainstream games I have eve rplayed, and all my reasons are objective. This also goes for mario 64, and a few other games, although only some are as bad as OoT. but i found a lot of the N64's games to be either mostly unknown, or mostly popularized by fans and not really many objective facts for its higher rated titles. Reviews were given more credibility than they did now, even though they had less brain cells back then. The 3Do was amazing period. With the exception of how you connect controllers, which isn't bad, just, weird... it had an amazing library of games. A lot weren't put out on mainstream for the sole reason that the 3Do company did not actually help many developers support their games, even with ads, and they had to do it themselves. Even now the library is barely known. I always say you have to actually look around instead of trust the same 2 mags over and over. Especially system specific ones. The PS1 after the death of the 3Do (Or in the dying of the 3DO) got 3DO games, and its sequels, and it also had a lot of great games that most would never know. Most of the games that are most popular at the time for the PS1 during those days was mixed. Some games i could see, and others where like either fanboy loyalty like the N64's or just not really impressive in anyway shape or form (Like FFVII, SoTN, Megaman X5, Jet Moto, Bloody Roar, Legend of Dragoon, Resident Evil, etc.) but what happened happened. But over all both systems were great. I would put Saturn at second, it basically ended up taken the Neo-Geo's place in 2D and 2.5D games and had more genre support than the Neo-Geo was starting to have because the genre variety of the neo-Geo continued through the 90's until it died around 2003. 6th gen: Xbox PS2 had games. But other than a few unique games and some first-party, and a little bit of third, the games started just either having no effort, ripping off (Ty is a ripoff of Jak period.), or just making cash-ins on things people liked at the time. unlike the SNES though, this increased way to damn fast. The GC had terribly repetitive, familiar, and similar games, with only a few really good games worth owning the console. The DC didn't really have much planning before launch and killed Sega early. The games they had at death, some where good, but then a lot got ported, some exclusively to the GC for some reason, and it did help the GC a bit. Although DC games in some cases loose their appeal really quick, and some ports where worse than the DC games (Sonic Adventure comes to mind.) The Xbox was the fusion of console and Pc for the first time on even terms. If you were a console games, they had games you never played, with genres you were never used to, in styles that were different. Vice-Versa for PC gamers. They also had games that has attributes of both. So when you think about it, if you wanted new gaming experiences the most, and many people will tell you this, you would have gotten the Xbox. However, as it was basically introducing a lot of new games, it was also a risk taker for some. but I didn't mind that. For portables: Zodiac The Zodiac was just a better platform for games to entertain me. With the NGPC and GBA tied do to the fact the GBA had more games, but lacked any appeal, and its library was poor. but just enough to be slightly above the NGPC. Which had off-game options. The GBA did not have this. but the GBA gets a slight lead for the GBP, but that doesn't really help boost up either the GC or the GBA. 7th gen: All (but Wii). Portables: Caanoo The PS3, Xbox 360, PC, have all offered many new gaming experiences mainstream and not then almost any other gen. Almost. Many great games to be played, and I have yet to choose one over the other. i am working on the details now. the Wii however, is too mixed. it has many games that are good, but most of those either flopped, or no one know much or anything about, and most of the mainstream titles are recyled, doing well just for the fact they targeted a broader audience. the sales gaps are just too damn stupid. It does have interesting games though. I like Arc Rise Fantasia and a few other games on it. For Portables, the DS and the PSP (mostly the PSP) are nice and all, and the Ds with its same concept as the Wii and such, cool, and both offer to play old games and new games and all the other jazz with some restrictions, and terrible wifi internet acess. But the Caano, it is the best portable this gen period. Great internet browser, can play older games you owned or want to own (But mostly own) the way they were made for the original devices, and it had its own original games as well as many off-game programs. Caanoo is just the bomb. And yeah, that's about it, not much but eh.
