I honestly can't single out 1 MGS game. I just know 1, 3, 4 are my favorites. While 2 was amazing (first mgs for ps2, great tech, etc etc) raiden killed it, along with the hard to follow plot. Also, Twin Snakes sucks. It's bad, its like Matrix n crap in cutscenes, not to mention it is 20 fold easier.
I still consider the original MGS on the PS1 to be the best in the franchise, I say this because it was the 1st time I played such a title and I was just in awe of its awesomness. No MGS after it gave me that same feeling although they are stellar titles. I am anxiously waiting for Sony to release MGS1 on the PS store in Europe.
MGS3 for me .. had great gameplay, great characters and an amazing story worthy of a classic movie loved how it mixed fiction with real cold war history, to make the world more cohesive
MGS3. Still the best Metal Gear (though it does edge out MGS1)in in my eyes. Takes the forumla, appies it to a different scenario, refines and redifines it, and doesnt have to deal with the gaping plot holes, so its story is a hell of a lot sharper and well thought out. The only major problem was the standard camera not being suitable for the larger enviroments. Thankfully MGS3:S fixed it. Its unbelievable a game like MGS4 has gaping design flaws, next to it.
Good to say that the MGS3 lovers are in full force. MGS3 was definitely the high point as far as story is concerned. That's why I can't wait for Peace Walker. Direct sequel to MGS3 FTW!

What about Portable Ops - in terms of canon? Funny you should mention that because I did enjoy Portable Ops a whole lot. I'll admit you got me; I was conveniently ignoring the existence of Portable Ops in my post because Kojima wasn't the lead for it. And I hate blind followers of Kojima who think everything he does is right, so it pains me that I did that. I guess it's more that Peace Walker will be more a spiritual successor to Snake Eater than Portable Ops was. Not that Portable Ops wasn't a damn fine game; PO's story was completely up to par with the rest of the series IMO.

Portable Ops was awesome - I didn't know Kojima wasn't the lead (and I agree with you on ' blind followers' ), but I see your point - it makes perfect sense Peace Walker is a spiritual successor. Saying that i'd be sure Kojima oversaw, or even wrote the story to PO, as he is handling his own in terms of canon. It certainly was a good though; gameplay and story.
