Sustainable or not?

Hate to say it, I was expecting $350-450
It being $600 is a bit too much. I can't say I want to buy it anymore. I really put off right now
For the record it's 599.99 before taxes or shipping
I thought it was around $300-350?
So apparently, if you pre order it now, it will be shipped to you in April since the first batch that is shipped on March is sold out from all the pre orders
$600 for some gimmicky bullshit that will be swept under the rug within 2-3 years.
You're looking at at least $1500 for a PC build that will be able to run games in VR at "decent" settings and then an additional $600 for this crap.
Hey, if you want to pay over two grand for VR capabilities on games that look like they came out of the PS2 era...then knock yourself out.
@frank_castle: if you at building a PC for VR it's not worth it. But if you alrdy have a high end PC, 600 might not be too crazy

I have a 970 FTW+ and these assholes are saying that a 970 is basically the bare minimum for Occulus capabilities.
Screw that noise
I have no idea really, I know I wasn't planning to preorder this or Playstation VR at any price. Not sold on VR at all.
I will wait until both Vive and Oculus have launched and then decide which is better or getting the most support. No VR for me until 2017.
I'm happy to wait on it for now. I'll wait for some reviews, and for more games to come out that support it. Perhaps soon after a better, cheaper version will be available. This tech is so new I'm not willing to shill that much. Hell...I could buy some nice, premium parts for that cost, which at this point seems a gamble to me.
Bummer is, there's nothing out there right now that I could really "upgrade." I have, for me, pretty nice everything. Beyerdynamic dt-990 premium cans, powered by a Schiit stack dac/amp, Yamaha receiver with 7.1 Klipsch reference speakers, 4790k @4.7ghz, 16gb ddr 2400, 2 ssds (boot/game) and 2 4tb hdd's, Asus Swift Rog Screen, 980ti sli, and to boot it's all under water. I feel pretty spoiled, but it's a bummer not having any real upgrades without absurd diminishing returns.
If reviews are stellar upon release though...maybe I'll bite. But for now...I'll let other's test it for a minute.

The only people still claiming Vr is a gimmick are people who have never tried it and never spoken to someone who has.
You can also build an i5 + 970 PC for $850-$1200, assuming you're starting from scratch, which I imagine is NOT what most people interested in PC VR will be doing. Most will just be picking up a $300 GPU.
I'm hanging off until the Vive is out and both have been reviewed and compared. The Vive has been the most attractive to me in recent months and with OR being much more expensive than expected, it's looking even more so now.
They're even holding back on the hand controllers, meaning even more cost if you want them.
Wow, this price announcement is a game changer. We were led until recently to believe Oculus Rift would be in the ballpark of $350, and now we're paying $600 for a headset that doesn't even come with the recommended Touch controllers.
Although they are not direct competitors, Sony definitely will come out with the much more mainstream solution if they can price it at $350 or below.
I strongly believe VR is here to stay. Have you guys not been following the news about how big sex robots are going to be in 2016? (No shit I am not into that stuff I just love reading news/politics) but I can see VR is going to become the norm.
Like many gamers, I wear glasses. The only thing that worries me about VR is how safe is it for the eyes? What are the long term effects? VR is not worth ruining my eyesight; no matter how realistic it is. A big hd tv set with some high end headphones is immersive enough for me. Does anyone have a legitimate answer? Is VR enough to justify the safety of your vision? Lastly, no matter how real VR gets to look in the future; it will never be as good/realistic as playing the game what it called real life.
@GarGx1: don't forget vive is suppose to be the premium version. Hey want to be the most expensive one.

I tried Rift at NYC Comic Con and didn't like it. Cant imagine wearing any headset for any period of time. No thanks.
@Berserker1_5: My issue isn't necessarily with the cost, I just have a feeling that the Vive is going to be a better product. Really I'm just not going to jump in until I get a good idea of which one is better. I also want to try both consumer models as well before buying.
$600 is a little steep considering you will need to sink at least that much again into a rig that will work with the Rift, more if you want ultra quality.
I'll let others jump on the bleeding edge. I'll buy in later at a cheaper price with better technology.
By the way, it sold out in 15 minutes.
I wonder how many they had for pre-orders. I know the iracing community is purchasing them. I'm going to wait to see what the VIBE or StarVR offers and prices. I like the high end version the StarVR is supposed to offer. Larger field of view and higher definition screens but I fear that'll be well over $1000. Might be worth it though.

I don't think there is much danger in eye injuries. Strain perhaps, but nothing permanent. I think that is just an old wive's tale, like sitting too close to the TV.
I don't get car sick, sea sick, or any kind of motion sickness. 3D movies and 3DS don't bother me at all. However when I played around with Google Cardboard with a 2560x1440 display (which exceeds that of the Rift) I became nauseous after a while. Hopefully it was just the inferior optics and general setup. I hope I'm not screwed for all types of VR.
@skektek:
A LED so close to your eye and you think there is no risk to the eye
Monitors are already a small risk in a long term, I'm sure those goggles are as well
@GoldenElementXL: they said they were trying to hit a $350 mark
They also said that it would take no more 1,500 for the PC and the OR. Yet the PC itself is about 1,000 if you build it yourself here at most it should be 500.
It's too high for me but I still think there is a market for that.
They decided to go for the no-compromises approach with the idea of making an amazing VR experience that will leave a lasting impression instead of a comprised VR experience that has a much higher chance of coming off as a gimmick leaving VR dead in its tracks.
It's a gamble though. With such a high entrance barrier it's going to suffer from a lot lower market size which means less games will likely be developed. This can be countered by the existing games on the market that are already very well suited for VR, but most of them exist in the niche sim market for various sims (driving, racing, flying, space).
Only time will tell.
Well that's VR dead unless PSVR is €200
VR is going to die much quicker if terrible VR irreverence is what gets a large market share because of it's cheaper price. The PS4's version of VR is going to come off as a horrible gimmick as they can't even come close to matching a PC in any aspect.
A shitty first impression for a $250 (more likely $300) device is going to kill it much sooner than a fantastic experience at an unreachable pricepoint.
Properly done VR is a game changing experience. But that's the key, it has to be properly done. If it's not done right it'll come off as a gimmick and destroy people's perception of VR. Oculus is going to provide the one product on the market that has a non compromised approach to the counter the inevitable shitstorm against VR that the PS4's VR will be.

I'm interested. What about LEDs could be potentially damaging to the eye? The spectrum is quite precise, there is very little UV emission. Also DC LEDs have very little flicker.
Given the PC requirements this was never gonna be massmarket at launch anyway so I can understand that they went for the no compromise approach. All original backers will get it for free so there's that. With all the tech you get (camera, quality headset, controller, high quality screen etc) it seems like a fair price, but if you think about what you can do with it for now it's a bit high perhaps.
