@aigis well thats messed up, it may have been worth it with the controllers, also what if you dont need an xb one pad thats an extra unnecessary expense.

On the oculus shop they only have that package as a pre-order option. Maybe down the road they will separate it, but I think they are trying to get some money out of people by bundling while people are really excited for vr. Here's the post they made about on their site if you're interested
Actually sounds pretty reasonable to me, though I'm not going to jump on the bandwagon right away.
Give it some time, let the early adopters do their adopting, see how things pan out, then if it proves to be a good thing, it'll have already come down in price and I'll be on board.
Actually I say that, but the company I work with is already doing VR development, I'll probably just get one for free lol.
It's more expensive than I hoped it would be (I was hoping for a $500 price point), but considering that this is cutting edge technology, I think the price is fair, but I just think they did a poor job of managing people's price expectations. But I much rather they deliver an expensive device that delivers an amazing virtual reality experience over a cheap device that delivers a shitty virtual reality experience.
Cutting edge technology is always going to be expensive and out of reach for the mass market consumers at first. The price of the Oculus Rift is comparable to the price that DVD players and Blu-ray players were when they first launched and just like DVD players and Blu-ray players eventually dropped to a more mass market friendly price, so will virtual reality headsets, but I can't wait for that as I've been dreaming of having a great virtual reality headset ever since I was a little kid and now it is finally almost here. I can afford to buy it while still paying all my bills, so there is no way I'm going to hold out on buying something that I always told myself I would someday buy ever since I was like 5 years old.
I always assumed they would be priced similar to the sdk versions which if i recall were around $300-350. They even hinted after dk2 that the retail price may be just a bit pricier yet still in that ballpark. $600 is not in the same ballpark as $350. I would have pre-purchased for $400 but ill wait for more software if i am even to consider dropping $600 on one. Guess they felt that if people are willing to drop $500-600 on gpus they would be willing to for vr as well.
Hate to say it, I was expecting $350-450
It being $600 is a bit too much. I can't say I want to buy it anymore. I really put off right now
What's a different $150 more, huh?
No.. I think it should be around 200.
Thats a joke. $600 is way to much. Didnt sony learn from the PS3 launch LOL. Sony is gonna loose alot of money because of this garbage. At launch it will sell but then it will fall flat on sonys face. The casuals and main hardcore gamers will not buy this. Hope sony has money left after this bombs in there face much like 3D
WTF are you smoking son? Oculus Rift is not Sony's device. You mean Facebook.
If you're going to bash something at least get your facts straight about what it is you're bashing.
Can't...be..serious..
This will bomb so hard. $600 is already a ton of money for high end products people actually want. Let alone an unproven gimmick.
@aigis: Thanks,I was interested until now...think I will wait for the vive and buy that complete with the controllers, it has always looked like a worthy contender.
The cost of the controller is like $50. So you still have to pay $550. Vive is going to be the same or maybe even more. The cost of their controllers might be really high.
@svaubel: Just because some rich, hardcore early adopters bought the early stock doesn't mean this price is sustainable.
Wasn't terribly interested in the first place, but that $600, while perhaps not unreasonable, certainly doesn't help to make me change my stance.
For me VR has always been a "wait and see" thing. VR is going to have to prove itself before I even think about shelling out that kind of cash.
Bummer is, there's nothing out there right now that I could really "upgrade." I have, for me, pretty nice everything. Beyerdynamic dt-990 premium cans, powered by a Schiit stack dac/amp, Yamaha receiver with 7.1 Klipsch reference speakers, 4790k @4.7ghz, 16gb ddr 2400, 2 ssds (boot/game) and 2 4tb hdd's, Asus Swift Rog Screen, 980ti sli, and to boot it's all under water. I feel pretty spoiled, but it's a bummer not having any real upgrades without absurd diminishing returns.
Holy crap man. That's one hell of a rig. I think you're set until.....2025. Yea.
OT, I'm a bit surprised at the cost....I was expecting $500 at most. I'll be waiting probably about a year until the CV2 version hits and Touch comes out. Hopefully by then eye tracking will be standard, resolution will be much better, more software will be out, and it'll all be cheaper. I need to upgrade my rig in the meantime anyway.
$600 is more than I'm willing to pay for it. It needs to be at least $200 cheaper for me to consider it.
If Sony prices it at ~$350 I wonder what features they will be cutting out in order to keep it that way.
$600 is crazy.
Well there are obviously a ton of enthusiast out there buying this thing. Mine isn't shipping until June!
Well that's VR dead unless PSVR is €200
VR is going to die much quicker if terrible VR irreverence is what gets a large market share because of it's cheaper price. The PS4's version of VR is going to come off as a horrible gimmick as they can't even come close to matching a PC in any aspect.
A shitty first impression for a $250 (more likely $300) device is going to kill it much sooner than a fantastic experience at an unreachable pricepoint.
Properly done VR is a game changing experience. But that's the key, it has to be properly done. If it's not done right it'll come off as a gimmick and destroy people's perception of VR. Oculus is going to provide the one product on the market that has a non compromised approach to the counter the inevitable shitstorm against VR that the PS4's VR will be.
Did you ever use PSVR before you make these comments?
@xhawk27: I dunno, i think vive and ps vr are going to be a little cheaper than rift because they dont have the audio support. I think rifts preorder price is just bundling a bunch of stuff to take advantage of people who are excited about vr since they are the first ones up
Never expected Oculus Rift to cost over 400usd,it is just a screen with two glasses, literally is my phone+2 magnifying glasses.
And Rift is support by 1000 dollars PC,which should make it costs even less.
The edge+ costs $599,with a 2560x1440 screen,two cpu( 2.1GHz + 1.5GHz),one gpu and camera.
Rift costs the same with a 2160 x 1200 screen and two magnifying glasses?
What's the deal?

It's actually two seperate screens 1080x1200 / eye. Those lenses are not your regular magnifying glasses.... There's also high precision positional/rotational tracking, camera, headphones, controller.
Using demeaning descriptions is just lazy rhetoric. It's like saying that soccer is "22 guys/gals chasing a ball", or fine dining is "just some atoms on a plate". There's zero value to that type of "analysis".

Almost every gamer got a headset,no one need another pair.
You much been using controller already if you game on PC.If you don't,you gotta be hating it,so what's good they give you another one.
It is not two 1080x1200 screens,it is one 2160x1200 screens split over duals 1080x1200 displays.
And google is selling those lenses in less than $20.(Less than $10 at some places.)
What in my mind was,all we want is a VR headset.$599?What's the deal facebook?

These headphones are og higher quality than the typical gaming ones, hence why they are included.
OR uses two seperate screens. DK1-2 used one screen, they changed that design for crescent bay onwards.

What? That would even lower their manufacture cost!
Oh,and a high quality headphone could easily cost more than $599,experting Rift pack with a typical $100 quality's headset,or worse.

That's what I'm thinking too. I'll wait until there's software to make it worthwhile. A high end monitor will work with everything. This device...not yet.
My wife is a prankster too. She may hit me in the gut while I have the thing on, and I'd never see it coming!
They should have talked with Nvidia and offered a more value oriented bundle with an upcoming higher end graphics card.
That stuff is gonna f with people's vision, just watch. Developers will do things which will disorient the eyes. A lawsuit will follow.
To be competitive the price is too high for the average consumer to invest in. I'd wait and see if it turns out to be some sort of fad like 3D was.
Here, it's 700€ and for me it's a big NO!!!
Properly done or not, there's no way that I pay that much for VR, NO WAY!!!
Maybe when it's around 300ish, and even then better have a cutting edge flightsim a la DCS or Falcon 4.0, 'cause that's the only thing i'll buy it for.
