Sandbox as in a large area to explore in a video game with only one boundary you can't cross. Examples being; Fallout, Grand Theft Auto, Saints Row, etc.

My take on them is positive. After playing games this open ended, going back to the ones that restrict me to "pathways" feel boring. However, the downside is the usual "dumb" AI. Although I did notice an improvement on Fallout 3's AI over Oblivion. The majority of devs that offer this type of game usually create something good from it in my perspective.

it works better for RPGs, otherwise id rather follow a linear path with some optional gameplay elements.

Sandbox games being good or bad relies entirely on the developer not the genre. I gave it a good though because there have been some really great sandbox games.

PS3's Oblivion was just fine actually. Although Fallout 3 was a different story, with slight undewhelming traits over the 360.

In general they're fantastic; it gives you the freedom to do whatever you want in any order you want.

The one issue is sometimes the AI can have conflicts due to how large the world is. I remember in Fallout 3 I had this one moment where there was a particular task I could choose to complete or not complete. I chose not to do it yet a couple hrs later, in a completely seperate town I encountered the person who wished to have the task done. One of the speech options I had was to question him on his motivations as to why he would wanted XX action performed despite the fact I had not done it. This was a pretty big bummer as I wanted to do XX task on my next playthrough however now I already know what happens at the conclusion of that task.

Much like any other game... it depends on how well the game is. If it's GTA quality? Absolutely. If it's Assassin's Creed quality? No. I hated Assassin's Creed, just incase anyone was wondering... lol.

I have surprisingly not come across a bad sandbox games, this could also just be due to the fact that i don't play bad games, but so far sandbox games are just generally fun. Anyone remember crackdown?

i LOVE open ended games unless they try to make everything seem bigger by adding lots of random buildings that you cant enter just to make the map bigger... ala GTA 4 and Assassins Creed Morrowind and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. are prime examples of good open ended games.
