Don't know which game would win. I'd have to play them all to be able to make a solid decision.
By opinion alone I'd have to say that Bioshock, Halo 3, COT4 and Crysis would be the titles to pick from.
2007 is one hell of a year for fans of the First Person shooter genre, but the biggest deal is that we have 7 premium FPS experiences from developers who has allready recieved numerous Game of The Year awards, for their games. The 7 games that will compete against each other this year. The 7 titles are:
Bioshock (PC/360)
From the makers of the legendary System Shock 2 comes a game thats allready being favorised as the best FPS game ever created. The games has become the 2nd highest rated FPS game ever and 5th highest ranked game ever.
Halo 3
Bungie took the world with storm when Halo was released for the Xbox back in the days. With more then 14 million games sold and with over 1 million preordered copies of Halo 3, it looks like its the audience favorite.
The Orange Box (PC/360/PS3)
Half-Life has become a phenomenon in the FPS genre as it dint just give the players one of the most well made FPS experiences, but it also made a huge difference at the worlds online community at the time. With 5 games in a bundle for the price of one game, we are getting the critically acclaimed Half-Life 2, the well recieved Episode one and the well awaited Episode Two. The new physics related game called Portal and Team Fortress 2 that is allready being described as being the best multiplayer game for 2007.
Metroid Prime 3: Curruption
Fans of the Metroid series was worried when Nintendo gave Retro Studios, the rights to make a FPS game based on the Metroid series. Instead of the game being a medicore experience, we got a game that took everyone with storm. Metroid Prime is the best reviewed FPS game of all time and the second game also did very well, so Curruption has high expectations. In only a week, it has generated 400,000 in sales and counting and high praise across the gaming world.
Crysis
When the original game Far Cry launched it was a sleeper hit that instantly got alot of succes. Due to the problems about the Far Cry franchise, Crytek are then making Crysis and every person who has layed their hands on the game, has been blown away.
Call of Duty 4 (PC/360/PS3)
The Call of Duty franchise has been the number one WWII game series for most players and the games has been major sellers in stores. Infinity Ward is shifting the experience from WWII into a modern war game and has been one of the most talked of games, in the press. It's drawing praise far and wide as perhaps the definitive modern shooter, with impeccable online play.
Unreal Tournament 3 (PC/PS3 in 2007)
Unreal Tournament rewrote our experience with online multiplayer and quickly became a phenomenon. The fast gameplay and cutting edge graphics made the UT series something the competitors could not match. With a story mode, user generated content and wilder graphics then ever, Epic is trying their best to steal our hearts this year.
So what game are you thinking will win the FPS genre this year, here? Which will get the nod from a majority of gaming sites? In a year like no other, FPS gamers have reason to rejoice.

i think you people are overrating orange and crysis. they are now ea games, and remember what ea did to black? orange is a years old game with two expantions and two mods, the best mods counterstrike not being one of them. more people bought halflife for counterstrike than bought it for gord freeman. crytek was good under ubi, but i think ea will budget cut the quality out odf the game.
ut will take a while to hit it's stride. the user made mods and maps are a lage part of the ut experience. mp3 and bioshock are already out, the fact that we are mentioning other games at this point means we dont think they take the crown. cod4 is a new seeries useing an old name. it is actavisions atempt to move into ubi's tom clancy games. will they pull it off? it remains to be seen. infinity ward is good, but cod4 has an uphill battle. expectations are going to be based on ww2.
that leaves halo3. it has over 1 million preorders in america alone. the ending of 2 lowered expectations so the bar isn't as high. if bungie has done their homework the game should rule not just your 7, but every game of the year.

EA isnt making either of those games....
I think each game will do the best in different catogories.
I think Crysis will be the game to blow us away and quite possibly score 9.5 or 10 here on Gamespot.
I think Halo 3 will dominate sells because of its name and what the first two games established.
I think Metroid Prime 3 will push Wii systems and probably be one the best selling fps on the Wii for a long time.
I think Unreal Tournament 3 will have the best multiplayer experience out of all the games while Bioshock or Half Life will have the best Single player.
And I think Call of duty 4 will do well but not the best in every single catogory and be the jack of all trades.
So IMO there all winners this year.
Well I always look at PC and consoles differently. Any shooter coming out this year on consoles should fear the Halo war machine the game will be massive. There will be millions who buy it and even more who hate on it, thats the way it goes. Crysis is the big name for PC I believe just from the technical prowess it is showing. I used to think Enemy Territory would be huge but after trying the beta the game is not what I had imagined. Orange box is sure to sell well but some of the things will be overshadowed by others. Most likely it will be Portal which is a shame. Team Fortress at least has a cult following of sorts. Call of Duty...I dont know about this one. Yeah it looks good but there are games that look better. Theres no denying it will be fun since all the previous CoD games were, but unless the MP has received a real significant it wont be very crowded online. CoD2s mp was nothing special and it never really went anywhere there were to many online shooters better.
In terms of reviews I think it will be between Bioshock, Halo 3 and maybe Call of Duty. Reviewing the orange box is going to be awkward...will it be 3 reviews or some sum of all parts type of thing.
Sales...it sure as heck wont be Crysis so Im going with Halo 3.
MP thats the tough one. Crysis will be a sort of pretty looking Shadowrun, adding new ways to play with the nanosuit but underappreciated. Team Fortess is looking the unique online game of this season I know Ill be playing it. UT3 quite frankly I do not believe it is as popular as it used to be but introducing the series to new console audiances could make it huge. Halo 3...its simple thats for surebut frankly I dont care it is pure wicked fun at least thats what I thought while playing the Beta, which actually pushed some of my friends torwards buying a 360.
[QUOTE="rdo"]EA isnt making either of those games....nor did they technically make black, but they published and controled the budgets of those games. ea dosn't make good games, they buy good games and try to sell off the reputation earned before ea's involvment. crytek should have stayed with ubi. now ea and gabe, there's a pair that deserve eachother. it's two con men trying to con each other.i think you people are overrating orange and crysis. they are now ea games, and remember what ea did to black? orange is a years old game with two expantions and two mods, the best mods counterstrike not being one of them. more people bought halflife for counterstrike than bought it for gord freeman. crytek was good under ubi, but i think ea will budget cut the quality out odf the game.

EA is only publishing the orange box for the PS3....as far as I know the PC version in not published by them....
Crysis already has a massive budget....and has been delayed many times now...I doubt EA is forcing them to release the game early.

EA has no control over developers budgets .... what are you talking about? We have Microsoft ( Yes thats right Microsoft supporting it ) , Intel , nvidia & EA ... EA are doing the Music & Publishing.
They dont controls developer's budgets .. oh and ... Battlefield is under EA and is amazing.
Its close man. I mean CLOSE. I would hate to be the person who had to decide which was the best of them all.
1. It WONT be MP3 or Bioshock. You can quote me on that.
2. Its gonna be a close call between Halo 3, COD4 and Crysis.
lol, metroid purist wouldn't even put it up there.... its an adventure apparently.
I think Bioshock has the best chance so far.
Im sure the other will offer decent single and multi, maybe even more funbut Bioshock is a rare experience in the industry.
There are 3 games that really should be on that list if we are talking about what we think will be the best of the shooters and not what websites think. I believe Brothers in Arms HH looks far more enjoyable than any of those games and if it does come out this year can be a huge sleeper for GOTY. Gears which has been out for the 360 a year ago will be different and have tons of content with it on the PC and that got GOTY last year. And Left for Dead is a sleeper. Valve have already said that L4D is the most played game at there company beating out TF2. But to me GOTY might go to Crysis beating out Bioshock, because Bioshock has no multiplayer side and I dont know if mods will be made for it. While Crysis offers more Multiplayer, Map Editior, Mods, Great Single Player, and Coop play.
In sales..Halo 3 wins by default. Already outsold BioShock PC/360 and it ain't even out yet... How many games have paid for themeselves and its not even out yet:P COD4 is probably the closest contender for Sales IMO. As for being the most critical, I would have to say BioShock, Halo 3 and Orange Box. I can't see Orange Box getting less than a 9.0 especially since your getting one helluva deal(5 games).Pro_wrestler
You know Half-life 2 outsold Halo 2 right? I'm not saying orange box will sell that dam well, but it will definitely crush COD4 you can bet your life on that.
Single Player Crysis will win hands down.
Multiplayer UT2007 or Quake Wars
overall GOTY will be Crysis

I was gonna say something but then i saw you're second point, I wouldn't be unhappy with any of those quality games and thats something you can't often say with a lot of big release FPSs.

Yes Black is a flat out laughable example, so what if EA is funding Crysis, it's the most expensive game they've ever made, idk the Black budget, but I'm sure it was laughable in comparision and as the above poster said EA also funded 1942 and BF2 and those games were run away multimillion selling critically acclaimed hits.
And Valve funds itself buddy, EA is just pushing out there box sales, they will be making most of there sales off steam though. The only version I think EA is funding of Orange box is the PS3 version.
Best year ever 8) , my taste doesnt really reflect the majority opinion anyway, hence why I find Halo to be average. UT3/Crysis will grab my attention the most.
Sales ..... is hard to say ... Halo 3 upfront, but CoD4 is on all sytems, UT3 is on 2 systems ect.
Score ... I would say Halo 3 or Crysis ... assuming Crysis pulls it all off.
Meu2k7
Agreed
I'm starting to think that it's going to come down to if Crisis actually lives up to all the hype. If it does, I think it would take this hands down, even with the fact that it's first strike is going to be "has insane system requirements".
I can't see HL2 taking it, if only because the graphics will be a little outdated (although still awesome), and we all know that MP 3 isn't going to get the nod here due to Gamespots recent review scheme. And as much as I like Halo, I can't see it taking the cake from Bioshock or Crisis. Don't get me wrong, it's gonna be a great game. I just don't see it evolving the franchise enough to topple the other 2 games.
I have a hunch that after the dust settles,
COD4 will take home the cheese and grab that GOTY 2007 Award.
Grant Collier said it himself, Lead Developer
"I'll take the ******* Pepsi Challenge agianst any FPS coming out this year."
60FPS nuff said. ;)
Oh and yeah FLATOUT BETTER ONLINE THEN HALO 3 more options with customization, Perks, Kill Streaks that actually mean something, Custom Guns, and a leveling system that actually unlocks things that matter. Hardcore mode.
I think Quake Wars is going to be a big suprise. Probably won't score the highest out of the 7, but will get low to mid 8's on Gamespot.Disturbed_Dude
Ha, I love being right.
I think Halo 3 wins as far as sales go. I don't think any of the other games on your list will come close to Halo 3 in the sales category. Graphically, I don't really care. All the games on the list look or will look "good enough". If you have a monster gaming pc, then sure, Crysis will probably own. As far as gameplay goes, I think all of these titles do well. I would put Metroid first in the campaign mode with Halo 3 as a distant second. I'm expecting the campaign/story...etc for Crysis to be pretty generic. FarCry was all about wowing you with the graphics and the rest was pretty standard FPS. For multi-player, I would call it a toss-up between Halo3, Team Fortress 2, and UT3. I guess if I had to pick a favorite for multi-player, I would go with UT3. My favorite to win it all would be Halo 3 due to it's mass appeal.

:P 8.5 is good, I really like it, its got great gameplay and competitive online even on some Pub servers.
The only shread of competitive play Ive mustered on Halo 3 is Team doubles ... even then its about weapon whoring :I
